Limited midstory density was also identified in the Integrated Science Agenda as an important component of upland hardwood systems in the GCPO geography, with midstory coverage ≤20% indicating a healthy additional vertical strata in the system. Midstory is an important habitat component for several ISA priority species, particularly those avian species who require midstory structure for nesting such as the wood thrush (Hylocichla mustelina). We again used plot-level Forest Inventory and Assessment data imputed at 250 m resolution across the GCPO LCC to assess tree density. The USFS imputed tree density data product provides raster maps for the conterminous U.S. generated using 250 m resolution MODIS satellite imagery,...

The grizzly bear distribution boundary represents the estimated geographic extent of occupied range of the Yellowstone grizzly bear population for the period 2008-2022. The distribution boundary was delineated to provide reliable estimations of grizzly bear occupancy throughout time and for use as a monitoring tool in grizzly bear management and conservation. The boundary was delineated by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) using an interpolation method based on grizzly bear VHF telemetry and GPS locations as well as verified observations and signs of grizzly bears inside the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem during 2008 to 2022.

This data set shows Level I, II, and III ecological regions (ecoregions) of North America, and is an update and revision of files developed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America in the late 1990’s in a cooperative project for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC). These revised ecological regions were developed in a meeting between representatives of the three nations and CEC in April 2006 in Newport, Oregon. Ecoregions are areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources. The ecoregions in this data set are based on the premise that a hierarchy of ecological regions can be identified through the analysis of the patterns and...

This multi-layer GeoPackage contains the Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey design transects from 2007 to present. The original transects were created as shapefiles and imported to this SQLite database. Transects were saved as individual polylines named according to the year they were created (e.g., “main.ACP_2007_Trans,” “main.ACP_2008_Trans,” “main.ACP_2009_Trans,” etc.). These aerial transects were developed systematically from randomly-selected start points and created along constant lines of latitude. The inter-transect spacing in the low, medium, high, and very-high density strata varies so that areas with higher waterfowl density are surveyed more intensively. The current four-year rotating...

R code that takes in the nest capture history data (chdata.csv), reformats it for model fitting in the Bayesian MCMC software JAGS via the R package jagsUI. Various generalized linear mixed models are fit using a Huggins two occasion capture history model structure as in Program Mark. A series of models of increasing complexity are fit and compared using DIC. Model text is written to text files for each model but is generally not used or saved. Posteriors are saved as Rworkspaces or written to text files for use in population estimation (nostpop.R). Code can be run to generate model results and R workspaces/objects to inspect parameter estimates. The primary purpose of this code is to compare various mixed model...

This is a geojson file that define the spatial polygon of the YKD nest plot study area. From 1998 to current, nest plot centroids are randomly selected from this area with the constraint that plots cannot overlap plots from the previous 5 years. This area also define the area of inference for design-based calculations of nest population estimates. Before 1998, larger areas were sampled, so this file does not apply to those years.

Draft 2 of the summary report for ecological assessment of estuarine tidal marsh systems along the GCPO LCC Gulf Coast subgeography. This includes an assessment of landscape endpoints identified by the GCPO Adaptation Science Management Team in the draft GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda. The estuarine tidal marsh priority system in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks LCC (GCPO LCC) Integrated Science Agenda (ISA) includes general ecological systems of brackish/saltwater marsh and seagrass beds and was adopted as one of two initial ecological systems of focus for the Gulf Coast subgeography of the GCPO LCC (the other being beaches and dunes). The desired ecological state for Gulf Coast estuarine tidal marsh is a...

We developed a composite land cover approach for use in the GCPO LCC ecological assessment of upland hardwood woodlands and forests. These datasets reflect the upland hardwood “mask” that represents the composite of 3 or 4 datasets, from which the remaining landscape endpoints defined in the LCC Integrated Science Agenda will be evaluated. The mask indicates where on the landscape we estimate upland hardwood woodlands and forests to be found in any condition. We first resampled 30 m 2011 GAP ecological systems land cover and Florida Cooperative Land Cover version 3.1, as well as 10 m Texas and Oklahoma Ecological Systems Mapping land cover data to 250 m using a nearest neighbor algorithm. The assessment was conducted...

Dead and downed wood in any forest serves an important ecological function with regards to decomposition and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. It also provides critical habitat for many reptile and amphibian species, such as the red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus), in addition to providing an important food source for insects and detritivores upon which many other species in the system depend. The GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda (ISA) targets density of down wood around one 6’ dead/down log of ≥8” dbh per acre, essentially saying that on every acre there needs to be at least one sizable down log. The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Forest Inventory and Analysis program does not collect plot-level data...

These layers represent estimates of imputed tree density calculated as part of the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems. The GCPO Integrated Science Agenda targets tree densities of around 40 trees/acre for upland hardwood woodland systems and around 80 trees/acre for upland hardwood forest systems. These metrics should be correlates with target endpoints of basal area and canopy cover, though not entirely synonymous. We again used plot-level FIA data imputed across the GCPO LCC to assess tree density. However, it was challenging to identify and map the very limited acreage amounts meeting exactly this target in upland hardwood woodlands and forest. We therefore assessed the mean tree density within...

These heatmaps show a top 3 invasive and problematic plant stressor for montane areas in the Chihuahuan Desert, as ranked by participants, and the concentration of participants who reported as working in each municipality or county who also voted for that stressor across the landscape. Symbology represents the percentage of participants with 0% = dark green, 0.0001 % - 24.99% = light green, 25% - 49.99% = yellow, 50% - 74.99% = orange, 75% - 100% = red. All counties and municipalities identified by participants as areas where they work were given a tally for each of the top 3 stressors that participants chose. Counties with a small number of participants were not adjusted for small sample size. These results were...

This indicator depicts the number of different stream size classes in a river network not separated by large dams. Reason for Selection River networks with a variety of connected stream classes help retain aquatic biodiversity in a changing climate by allowing species to access climate refugia and move between habitats. Input Data – Estimated Floodplain Map of the Conterminous U.S. from the EPA EnviroAtlas (see this factsheet for more information) – Other input for this indicator was provided by the Southeast Aquatic Connectivity Assessment Project (SEACAP). SEACAP identifies this metric within the category of “size/system type”. It measures the number different stream size classes in each functional network. To...

This data represents an assessment of forest patch size used in the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems by the GCPO LCC. We used a combination of remote sensing products including 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) forest classes and the 2011 MAV forest classification layer produced by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture to delineate patches of all forest types in the GCPO LCC. We used NLCD as the primary data source when assessing forests outside the GCPO LCC MAV subgeography, and the LMVJV forest classification as the primary data source for forest assessment within the MAV. NLCD was developed using 2011 Landsat TM imagery, with forest classes including only areas with trees exceeding...
