The sampling of 41 hydrologically diverse rivers that are monitored through the National Water Quality Network (NWQN) by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) took place during the water years of 2008 through 2018. Water samples were collected and filtered in the field (unless otherwise noted) using 0.45 micrometer pre-rinsed capsule filters (Versapor membrane), silicon tubing, and a peristaltic pump. Water samples were then shipped on ice to the USGS in Boulder, Colorado and chilled to approximately 4 to 6 degrees Celsius until analysis. Dissolved...

Unvegetated to vegetated marsh ratio (UVVR) in the Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague Bay is computed based on conceptual marsh units defined by Defne and Ganju (2018). UVVR was calculated based on U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) 1-meter resolution imagery. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands, including the Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague Bay salt marshes, with the intent of providing Federal, State, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability and...

Historic mining activity in the Old Lead Belt has led to substantial influx of lead and zinc mining waste into the channel of the Big River in southeastern Missouri. The primary objectives of this data collection was to determine the depth of heavy-metal contamination at five gravel bars along the Big River to verify and supplement findings by Pavlowsky and Owen (2010). A secondary objective of the study was to develop and implement methods for use in other Natural Resource Damage Assessment projects, such as the Tri-State Mining District (TSMD) project (Smith, 2016). This data was collected in cooperation with the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute, Missouri State University, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife...

This dataset contains a tabular file of phytoplankton abundance and community composition analysis in samples collected from two sites in the Western Lake Erie Basin and one inland lake site in northeast Ohio. Samples were processed by the Ohio Water Microbiology Lab of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and analyzed by BSA Environmental Inc. and during federal fiscal years 2016-2018. The dataset includes phytoplankton taxa (genus and species), division, tally (number of cells counted for each taxa present), density (cells per liter), and total biovolume (cubic micrometers per liter) for each sample collected. These data can be used to assess the community composition of phytoplankton at the sites, identify cyanobacteria...

Onsite wastewater disposal systems (OWDS) in coastal regions of Long Island, New York, contribute bacteria, nutrients, and organic wastewater-associated compounds (including pharmaceuticals, personal care and domestic use products referred to here as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs)) to downgradient shallow groundwater in nearshore settings. Many of the densely populated areas along the East Coast (i.e. Long Island, New York) are served by OWDS. Approximately 75 percent of Suffolk County, New York, residents rely on simple OWDS such as a series of cesspools (ground pits lined with cement blocks or rings without a sealed bottom) and septic systems. Cesspools provide minimal wastewater treatment, typically...

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are one type of contaminant that can enter treatment wetlands (Wiesner 2006) and impact the overall treatment efficacy. Grazing by filter feeding zooplankton, such as Daphnia magna, is critical to treatment wetland functioning (Ismail 2019), but the effects of AgNP on zooplankton are not fully understood, especially at environmentally relevant concentrations. In this study, the bioaccumulation kinetics of dissolved and nanoparticulate Ag in D. magna exposed to environmentally relevant Ag concentrations were characterized using isotopically labelled Ag as a tracer. Zooplankton samples were collected at a site in the Yolo Bypass in Northern California and at a comparison site on the Sacramento River below the city of Sacramento and analyzed for a large suite of current-use pesticides and degradates. Samples were collected biweekly in the summer/fall 2017 and 2018, and from May 2019−March 2020. Samples were collected by towing a 150-micron conical plankton net for 5 minutes by boat at each site. In the laboratory, zooplankton samples were filtered through a 63-micrometer sieve to separate the zooplankton and vegetation/detritus from the water. Large sticks, twigs, rocks, and leaves were rinsed with organic free water into the sieve and then discarded. The remaining mass in the...
Legacy and emerging contaminants were measured in streams and rivers in the District of Columbia and the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia of the Chesapeake Bay watershed between 2005 and 2013. Passive sampling devices, SPMDs and POCIS, were used to sample these waterbodies, providing a time-integrated concentration of contaminants that are potentially bioavailable to native fishes. This data set is a compilation of data from eight separate studies, all focused on determining the potential exposure of organic chemicals to fish which may be responsible for instances of fish kills and intersex that were observed in these waterbodies.

The lower Fox River in Wisconsin is a heavily industrialized system and the major tributary to Green Bay within Lake Michigan. The region has been a listed as Area of Concern by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), indicating severe impairment of the ecological health of the system. Remedial action has taken place along the river to remove extensive polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination. However, it was unknown if mercury (Hg), also derived from industrial activity, remained within sediments and actively bioaccumulated within the food web. Mercury stable isotopes were analyzed in sediments and waters collected below the DePere Dam and upstream at Lake Winnebago to compare if Hg sources...

On October 5-6, 2022, a combination of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveying were used to collect bathymetric data of the Lummi Sea Pond near Bellingham, WA. Distributed XYZ points were interpolated to create a continuous bathymetric map of the sea pond. The final product is two-meter raster in NAD88 (2011) UTM 10N coordinates, with elevations referenced to NAVD88 (GEOID18a). Details of the process used to construct the surface are provided in the raster file metadata. Supporting datasets included in the zip file include raw ADCP data, ADCP bathymetry data in CSV format, and GNSS data in CSV format.
Cyanobacteria are common in inland water bodies. Many strains are known to produce potent toxins (cyanotoxins) which can impact human and animal health in sufficient concentrations. Lake Elsinore and Canyon Lake are two impaired lakes in California with frequent cyanobacteria blooms that are not monitored for toxin production. These data document the liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) results for 21 cyanotoxins and algal toxins in 13 cyanobacteria samples collected during bloom events from Lake Elsinore and Canyon Lake (CA, USA) in July, August, and September 2016.

Two empirical simple linear regression models were developed from SedCam imagery and concurrent physical sediment samples over a 20-month period at the East Branch Brandywine Creek gage (USGS 01480870). The image files included here are a subset, used in the calibration dataset for these regression models. Models relate the explanatory variable, Rmax (maximum digital number of the red band, which peaks at a wavelength of 590 nanometers) to point and cross-sectional mean sample response variables (milligrams per liter). These regression models predict suspended-sediment concentration from a non-contact sediment surrogate technique to improve surface water monitoring operations. Files include Nikon Electronic Format...
