Digital elevation model (DEM) data consist of a sampled array of regularly spaced elevation values referenced horizontally either to a Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection or to a geographic coordinate system. The grid cells are spaced at regular intervals along south to north profiles that are ordered from west to east. the U.S> Geological Survey (USGS) produces five primary types of elevation data: 7.5-minute DEM, 30-minute DEM, 1-degree DEM, 7.5-minute Alaska DEM, and 15-minute Alaska DEM.

Nitrogen-based fertilizers are used extensively in the White River Basin. Water samples were collected for nitrate analysis from 103 monitoring wells in four networks in the basin. Ninety-four "shallow" wells were screened near the top of the uppermost aquifer encountered; the remaining 9 wells were paired with shallow wells but screened 18 to 45 feet deeper. Samples from 6.4 percent of the shallow wells exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Maximum Contaminant Level of 10 mg/L (milligrams per liter). Elevated nitrate concentrations (higher than 3 mg/L) were common in unconfined, permeable deposits underlying agricultural areas; nitrate concentrations decreased with depth in these deposits. Information on the availability, past and current use, use trends, and water quality from groundwater and surface-water sources in the parish is presented. During 1993-95, water samples were collected at nine sites on eight streams in the Western Lake Michigan Drainages to attempt to determine pesticide concentrations. The sampling effort was part of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water- Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. Pesticides analyzed for were 58 herbicides and 30 insecticides. Pesticides are used extensively in the study area; application of herbicides to corn and soybeans accounts for most of the use. Herbicides were detected more frequently and generally at higher concentrations than insecticides. Control of phosphorus from rural nonpoint sources is a major focus of current efforts to improve and protect water resources in Wisconsin and is recommended in almost every priority watershed plan prepared for the State's Nonpoint Source (NFS) Program. Barnyards and crop- lands usually are identified as the primary rural sources of phosphorus. The volcanic processes that have shaped the Long Valley Caldera in eastern California have also created an abundant supply of natural hot water. This natural resource provides benefits to many users, including power generation at the Casa Diablo Geothermal Plant, warm water for a state fish hatchery, and beautiful scenic areas such as Hot Creek gorge for visitors. However, some features can be dangerous because of sudden and unpredictable changes in the location and flow rate of boiling water. The U.S. Geological Survey monitors several aspects of the hydrothermal system in the Long Valley Caldera including temperature, flow rate, and water chemistry.
