The Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit was authorized by the United States Congress in 1977. There are five cooperators: (1) U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), (2) U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), (3) University of Wyoming (UW), (4) Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD), and (5) Wildlife Management Institute. The primary Department of Interior cooperator was changed from USFWS to the USGS in 1996. The Units are now housed in the Biological Resources Division of USGS. Under the cooperative agreement, the Unit is charged to provide research and technical assistance to the WGFD, other Federal and state agencies, and private institutions, and to train graduate students in fisheries and wildlife...

On July 4th, the first Independence Day fireworks will shoot into the sky reflecting off the nearby lake or river, making that familiar pop! pop! sound throughout the night. With all the exciting pyrotechnics, it’s easy to overlook the fish living just under the water’s surface. Freshwater fish may seem impervious to the outside world under their protective layer of water, but climate change is already having major impacts on fish both around the world and right here in our backyards and communities. With 2014 being Earth’s warmest year on record since 1880, climate change is an ever-present threat to freshwater environments. Changes in temperatures and precipitation levels are already having major impacts on fish...

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

Problem - The Ithaca Subdistrict Office of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing technical assistance to the USGS, Biological Resources Division (BRD), at the Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science (TLAS) in an investigation of the availability of fresh ground water. An expansion in the water supply at the laboratory is needed for a proposed spawning facility for salmon strains that are viable for natural fisheries in the Great Lakes region. The hydrogeology of the area is a complex of moraine and outwash deposits west of Cortland, N.Y. Data from existing wells at the laboratory indicate that well screens may readily clog from precipitated minerals. A review of the hydrogeology of the area, including...

In 2013 and 2014, standardized electrofishing was conducted above and below Lock and Dam 19 (i.e., in Pools 19 and 20 respectively) of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). Sampling was consistent with the UMR Restoration program’s Long Term Resource Monitoring element (LTRM) and The Illinois Natural History Survey’s Long Term Electrofishing program (LTEF) allowing for standardized comparisons among the reaches we sampled and those sampled by the LTRM (Pools 4, 8, 13, and 26) and LTEF (Pools 16-21, and Pool 25). Data in this file is includes A) new data from Pools 19 and 20 and B) data compiled from public sources for other pools (LTRM and LTEF). Generally, data codes are intended to match formatting conventions from...

This data set includes acoustic telemetry detection data and biological attributes for walleye and grass carp in the Sandusky River and Bay, OH. The detection data also includes information about the receivers that recorded the detection of acoustic telemetry tags implanted in walleye and grass carp from from 2014 to 2021. Receiver attributes include location and deployment history of each receiver. Detections indicate where and when an individual fish implanted with a unique acoustic telemetry tag was recorded by a receiver. The attributes for each individual fish implanted with a tag and detected by a receiver include biological characteristics, tag details, and post-tagging release location.

This dataset represents a union of waterbody(WB) polygons from the PNW Hydro Framework Clearinghouse(PNWHFC), selected wetlands polygons from the BLM Timber Production Capability (TPC) dataset and the National Wetlands Inventory(NWI) data. The intention was to augment the PNWHFC WB polygons with TPC and with NWI in the areas of the WOPR where NWI coverage exists. This dataset only includes the wetlands portion of the combined dataset.BLM (Bureau of Land Management), WOPR (Western Oregon Plan Revision) PRMP (Proposed Resource Management Plan) This data is a PRMP release version of the data. The original name of the dataset is:hyd_aa_a_wetlands_poly The Water Bodies (WB) layer consists of sounds, bays, lakes, ponds,...

While siltation in the areas between reservoir and riverine ecosystems can damage habitat, there is emerging evidence to suggest certain water management strategies could promote high fish diversity in these areas—but this needs to be further studied. For example, new information on young fish species in Lake Texoma, a reservoir in the Red River watershed along the Texas/Oklahoma border, will help refine the priorities of the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative relating to certain LCC focal species, including alligator gar and white bass.
Mechanical predator removal programs have gained popularity in the United States and have benefited the recovery of several native trout and spring fish. These successes have been limited to headwater streams and small, isolated ponds or springs. Nevertheless, these same approaches are being applied to large river systems on the belief that any degree of predator removal will somehow benefit natives. This attitude is prevalent in the Colorado River mainstem where recovery and conservation programs are struggling to reverse the decline of four endangered fish species. Predator removal and prevention are major thrusts of that work but unfortunately, after 10 years and the removal of >1.5 million predators, we have...

Climate change is expected to result in widespread changes in species distributions (e.g., shifting, shrinking, expanding species ranges; e.g., Parmesan and Yohe 2003), especially for freshwater fish species (Heino et al. 2009). Although anglers and other resource users could be greatly affected by changes in species distributions, predicted changes are rarely reported in ways that can be easily understood by the general public. In contrast, climate science that more directly affects human welfare or livelihoods is often more readily communicated to the general public because it is of greater concern or closely related to everyday life. Abstract (from http://www.nrcresearchpress.com/doi/abs/10.1139/cjfas-2014-0394#.Vc36E_lVikp): Understanding variability in fish production, biomass, production/biomass ( P/ B) ratios, and their relationship to exploitation is central to fisheries sustainability. At Escanaba Lake, Wisconsin, USA, data from a compulsory creel census (1965–2009) were combined with survey data on fish populations to test for empirical relationships between annual production and exploitation rates of walleye ( Sander vitreus). Empirical estimates of walleye production were relatively high and temporally variable in Escanaba Lake. Annual production, biomass, and P/ B ratios ranges were 2.4–11.3 kg·ha −1·year −1, 9.1–49.4 kg·ha −1, and...

This dataset consists of one table with Area Backscattering Coefficient (ABC) data from hydroacoustic transect surveys collected around two seabird nesting colonies on Gull and Chisik Islands in lower Cook Inlet, Alaska.
They came from as far southeast as the Florida Keys and as far northwest as Fairbanks, Alaska, as a congregation normally separated by physical distance, but united by one growing concern: to find ways to help lessen the effects of climate change upon North American fish and fisheries. From June 1-5, a diverse collection of 27 fish experts (plus two remote attendees) representing a wide gamut of sectors, including the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), universities, conversation agencies and state natural resource departments from both the U.S. and Canada converged in Bozeman, Mont., at the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center for a workshop under the working title of “The Effects of Climate Change on Fish and Fisheries”...
