Submersed aquatic vegetation, a critical component of highly productive coastal ecosystems, is greatly affected by sea level rise. The Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative needs consistent information on these natural resources along the Gulf of Mexico Coast to develop computer modeling tools. These tools will contribute to efforts to forecast the effects of climate change on the distribution, abundance, and diversity of submersed aquatic vegetation and the fish and wildlife that depend on them. This project was co-funded by the Gulf Coast Prairie and the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperatives and the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center. An alternate reference...
The distribution and abundance of small, schooling forage fish (e.g., sandlance, capelin) in Alaska is knownfrom small-scale directed studies, but mostly inferred from incidental catches in large-scale trawl surveysthat were not designed (by gear or location) to sample forage species. In contrast, seabirds are conspicuous, highly mobile, samplers of forage fish that go to great distances (100+ km) and depths ( 200m) to locateephemeral prey with great efficiency. Thus, data on their dietary habits provides a valuable complement totraditional fisheries sampling. We propose to analyze large diet databases for three abundant seabirds(puffins, murres and kittiwakes) to: 1) characterize forage fish communities in the Gulf...

DOI, USDA, state fisheries managers, and NGOs are increasingly consumed with the recovery and restoration of native trout and salmon throughout their range. Almost all of the native inland cutthroat species, grayling and bull trout have been proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act, a number are currently listed as Threatened, while others are under review. Trout and salmon historically inhabited a variety of freshwater habitats (streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs), but have declined due to habitat degradation, fragmentation, and introductions of nonnative species. As such, the remaining intact populations of native trout, char, and grayling species in the western United States are largely...
The 1962 rotenone treatment of the Green River in southwestern Wyoming and northeastern Utah was planned to depress populations of undesirable fish species, primarily common carp (Cyprinus carpio), before closure of Flaming Gorge Dam (1962), and upstream Fontenelle Dam (1964). Pre-treatment surveys catalogued fish and aquatic insect communities, distributions of native and introduced fishes, and aquatic habitat. Near-term, post-treatment evaluations documented the effects of rotenone treatment on the aquatic fauna. Long-term, post-treatment assessments gauged development of sport fisheries for introduced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and followed the status of native fishes and aquatic insect fauna. Fisheries...

The Alaska Forage Fish Database (AFFD) is a consolidation of survey data from multiple agencies that were sampled via fishing gear and predator diets. The spatial coverage includes the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Chukchi Sea, and Beaufort Sea. Fish species within the database include Pacific sand lance, Pacific capelin, Pacific herring, juvenile walleye pollock and Pacific cod, myctophid, squid, and euphausiid. The data package is comprised of six tables: (1) catch_table includes counts, weight, and individual morphological characteristics (length, sex, age) of the sampled species; (2) event_table includes sampling time, location, and methods; (3) gear_table includes specifics about of the gear...

In 2012, US Geological Survey (USGS) and National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) embarked on an ambitious project to digitize surficial seafloor data from existing National Ocean Service (NOS) smooth sheets in the Gulf of Alaska including numerous bays bordering the Gulf. USGS and NOAA are using the data for the nation-wide usSEABED project that seeks to compile and unify existing seafloor characterization point data into GIS-friendly data using the dbSEABED program (Jenkins, 1997; Reid and others, 2005; Buczkowski and others, 2006; Reid and others, 2006) and for the North Pacific Research Board’s Gulf of Alaska Integrated Ecosystems Research Program (NPRB, GOA-IERP, http://www.nprb.org/gulf-of-alaska-project)...
