The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Marine Sanctuary Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has conducted seabed mapping and related research in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) region since 1993. The interpretive datasets and source information presented here are for quadrangle 5, which is one of 18 similarly sized segments of the 3,700 square kilometer (km2) SBNMS region. The seabed of the SBNMS region is a glaciated terrain that is topographically and texturally diverse. Quadrangle 5 includes the shallow, rippled, coarse-grained sandy crest and upper eastern and western flanks of southern Stellwagen Bank, its fine-grained sandy...

The Mammoth Springs (MS) fossil site at Hot Springs, South Dakota, provides a unique opportunity to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions. We used luminescence dating on fine sand sized potassium feldspars to establish a chronological framework for the site. In addition, we dated a late Pleistocene paludal proxy site using luminescence and incorporated those results with previous radiocarbon dating. Radiocarbon dating of the MS sinkhole organics suggested that the ages of the sediments that hosted the fossils was ~22-26 ka, while luminescence dating on feldspar grains suggested substantially older ages of ~130-255 ka. Analysis of the equivalent dose dispersion of the luminescence samples showed that the sediments...

This data release presents geologic map data for the surficial geology of the Aztec 1-degree by 2-degree quadrangle. The map area lies within two physiographic provinces of Fenneman (1928): the Southern Rocky Mountains province, and the Colorado Plateau province, Navajo section. Geologic mapping is mostly compiled from published geologic map data sources ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000 scale, with limited new interpretive contributions. Gaps in map compilation are related to a lack of published geologic mapping at the time of compilation, and not necessarily a lack of surficial deposits. Much of the geology incorporated from published geologic maps is adjusted based on digital elevation model and natural-color...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected geomorphic monitoring data in cooperation with the Upper Colorado River Wild and Scenic Stakeholder Group. This data release contains cross-section geometry and sediment-size distribution data collected from five sites on the Upper Colorado River, Colorado during April 6-8, 2022. The five sites selected for monitoring were located at the Pumphouse Recreation Area, Radium Recreation Site, State Bridge, above Catamount, and below Sweetwater Creek. A cross section was surveyed at each site using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System survey methods to document the channel geometry. All five cross sections are incorporated in this data release and presented in CSV...

This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the Lewisburg 30 x 60 minute quadrangle in Virginia and West Virginia. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter resolution lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2020 and 2021. The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data is projected in WGS 1984 Web Mercator. This representation illustrates the terrain as a hillshade with contrast adjusted to highlight local relief according to a topographic position index (TPI) calculation.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Colorado Springs Utilities, has been collecting topographic data annually since 2012 at 10 study areas along Fountain Creek, Colorado. The 10 study areas are located along Fountain Creek between Colorado Springs and the confluence of Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River in Pueblo. This data release presents topographic survey data, Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) survey data, elevation rasters, and elevation-change rasters collected or generated in 2023 as part of that monitoring effort. Topographic survey points were collected using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems (RTK-GNSS). These point data, along with lidar point clouds, were used to...

This data release provides an example data set to accompany the manuscript titled "A Robot Operating System (ROS) package for mapping flow fields in rivers via Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)", submitted to the journal Software X. This ROS *.bag file contains remotely sensed data acquired during an Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) flight along a reach of the Sacramento River near Glenn, California, USA, on September 16, 2022. Cooperators on this project include the Intelligent Robotics Group from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Southwest Fisheries Science Center. The file bag6xs600.bag contains a single...

This data release includes the data and code used for the paper titled "A framework to facilitate development and testing of image-based river velocimetry algorithms", published in the journal Earth Surface Processes and Landforms. Three *.csv files and five *.m files with MATLAB source code are included below. Each *.csv file contains output from a hydrodynamic model of a reach of the Sacramento River near Glenn, California, with a separate file for each of three different discharges (i.e., streamflow rates): 90, 191, and 255 cubic meters per second. The hydrodynamic model used for this purpose was the Nays2DH solver available within the International River Cooperative Interface (iRIC). Provided below is a link...

This data release includes cross section survey data collected during site visits to USGS gaging stations located throughout the Willamette and Delaware River Basins and multispectral images of these locations acquired as close in time as possible to the date of each site visit. In addition, MATLAB source code developed for the Bathymetric Mapping using Gage Records and Image Databases (BaMGRID) framework is also provided. The site visit data were obtained from the Aquarius Time Series database, part of the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS), using the Publish Application Programming Interface (API). More specifically, a custom MATLAB function was used to query the FieldVisitDataByLocationServiceRequest...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains results from the 2020 and 2021 geomorphic survey of North Fork Eagle Creek, New Mexico. Both geomorphic surveys were conducted by the USGS, in cooperation with the Village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, and are the last set of surveys in a planned series of five annual geomorphic surveys of the stream reach located between the North Fork Eagle Creek near Alto, New Mexico, streamflow-gaging station (USGS site 08387550) and the Eagle Creek below South Fork near Alto, New Mexico, streamflow-gaging station (USGS site 08387600). Specifically, there are two data release files, one each for the 2020 and 2021 surveys, that include the results from 14 cross-section surveys...

What will the rivers of the Pacific Northwest look like in the future? Will they be stable or unstable? Will the waters be cold and clear or warm and muddy? Will they have salmon or other species? These questions motivated our two-year study of climate warming effects on headwater streams draining the Cascade Mountains. Using a novel combination of snow, geohydrology, and sediment transport models we assessed the vulnerability of stream channels to changing peak streamflow. Our snow modeling shows that with just a 2°C warming, snowfall shifts to rainfall at all elevations, peak snowpacks occur over two months earlier, and snowpacks are reduced by over half of historical values. Our geohydrology modeling shows that...

In October 2023, the U.S. Geological Survey Idaho Water Science Center (IDWSC), in cooperation with Lucky Peak Power Plant Project (LPPPP), completed bathymetric and topographic surveys at two dam intake structures using multibeam bathymetry and boat-mounted Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). Dam operators indicated a possibility that sediment aggradation was occurring near the intake structures that allow water to pass through the dam. The bathymetric and topographic data generally include complete coverage near the intake structures and banklines near Lucky Peak Dam.
