Rockdale County Department of Water Resources (RCDWR) has a mission to update estimates of the reservoir storage capacity of Randy Poynter Lake in northern Georgia and to assess recent sedimentation. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center (LMGWSC) collected bathymetric data from November 29, 2022 to December 4, 2022 in support of RCDWR’s mission. Bathymetric data were collected using a high-resolution multibeam echosounder mapping system (MBMS), which consists of a multibeam echosounder (MBES) and an inertial navigation system (INS) mounted on a marine survey vessel, similar to methodologies described by Huizinga (2017). The final dataset of lakebed elevations (RandyPoynter2022_points.shp)...

These data were compiled to evaluate impacts of different reservoir management scenarios on sand exposure for aeolian landscape and cultural site resources. Objective of our study was to predict areas of dry, bare Colorado River sand as a function of different management alternative scenarios. These data represent predictions of dry, bare sand for the reach of the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and Bright Angel Creek in Grand Canyon National Park. These data were created during 2023 by the U.S. Geological Survey, Southwest Biological Science Center, Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center. These data can be used to understand how the area of sand available for windblown transport might be impacted different...

The Mammoth Springs (MS) fossil site at Hot Springs, South Dakota, provides a unique opportunity to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions. We used luminescence dating on fine sand sized potassium feldspars to establish a chronological framework for the site. In addition, we dated a late Pleistocene paludal proxy site using luminescence and incorporated those results with previous radiocarbon dating. Radiocarbon dating of the MS sinkhole organics suggested that the ages of the sediments that hosted the fossils was ~22-26 ka, while luminescence dating on feldspar grains suggested substantially older ages of ~130-255 ka. Analysis of the equivalent dose dispersion of the luminescence samples showed that the sediments...

This data release presents geologic map data for the surficial geology of the Aztec 1-degree by 2-degree quadrangle. The map area lies within two physiographic provinces of Fenneman (1928): the Southern Rocky Mountains province, and the Colorado Plateau province, Navajo section. Geologic mapping is mostly compiled from published geologic map data sources ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000 scale, with limited new interpretive contributions. Gaps in map compilation are related to a lack of published geologic mapping at the time of compilation, and not necessarily a lack of surficial deposits. Much of the geology incorporated from published geologic maps is adjusted based on digital elevation model and natural-color...

Water supply lakes are the primary source of water for many communities in northern and western Missouri. Therefore, accurate and up-to-date estimates of lake capacity are important for managing and predicting adequate water supply. Many of the water supply lakes in Missouri were previously surveyed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the early 2000s (Richards, 2013) and in 2013 (Huizinga, 2014); however, years of potential sedimentation may have resulted in reduced water storage capacity. Periodic bathymetric surveys are useful to update the area/capacity table and to determine changes in the bathymetric surface. In April and May 2022, the USGS, in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources...
