In 2012, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with Colorado Springs Utilities selected 10 reaches or study areas along Fountain Creek between Colorado Springs and the confluence of Fountain Creek at the Arkansas River for annual bed and bank characterization and topographic surveys. The 10 selected study areas are approximately 5 to 20 bank-full channel widths in length. The topographic surveys collected point data of location and elevation in the active channel and along both left and right banks and flood plains. Starting in 2012, USGS personnel have collected topographic survey data annually during the winter, spring, spring, or summer using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems....

Shapefile created by USGS. Channel transects were constructed to be used in evaluating channel widths and channel width variation. Transects were laid out at 0.1 mile intervals along the navigation channel thalweg. They extend perpendicular to thalweg and intersect the bankfull channel margin, delineated from low-altitude aerial orthophotos provided by the US Army Corps of Engineers, 11/1/2012 to 11/21/2012. The bankfull dimensions were digitized by hand. Each transect was additionally attributed with the USGS bend number, Pallid Sturgeon Population Assessment Program (PSPAP) segment number, and PSPAP bend number.
In the past two decades, major flood events have occurred on the lower Colorado River, a dramatic shift from the low flows and moderate floods associated with prior decades of river regulation. This study uses repeat aerial photography and Geographic Information System analysis to examine the planform channel response of the upper Colorado River delta (limitrophe reach) to this recently altered hydrology. Results indicate that channel contraction has been the dominant planform process in recent decades, but periodic floods resulted in channel expansion (1981–1988; 1997–2000) or likely reduced the channel contraction measured between successive aerial photographs (1976–1981; 1988–1994). Sinuosity adjustments...
Studies of brittle fault populations over the past decade have revealed that large extensional faults grow by the lengthening, interaction and physical linkage of en echelon fault segments. However, the temporal evolution of displacement accumulation during segment interaction and linkage is difficult to unravel due to a lack of direct observation during each stage in the fault array development. The process of profile re-adjustment prevents reconstruction of the growth history of a fault from its final configuration, and as a result, several models for the growth trajectory of a fault array undergoing linkage are possible. Observational data with which to constrain the relative timing and mode of displacement accumulation...
Bouteloua gracilis (Kunth) Lag. ex Griffiths (blue grama), Bouteloua eriopoda (Torr.) Torr. (black grama), and Larrea tridentata Coville (creosotebush) are dominant plants on the McKenzie Flats portion of the Llano de Manzano landform within Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico, part of the biome ecotone from the Colorado Shortgrass Steppe to the Chihuahuan Desert. In this study, we examine the hypothesis that soil heterogeneity, determined by variation in surface soil depth, carbonate accumulation, and fine-textured fraction, controls relative dominance of the three species. The area is flat, generally <1% slope; however, abrupt soil differences exist even within the flattest parts of the landscape...
The style and degree of channel narrowing in aggrading reaches downstream from large dams is dependent upon the dominant geomorphic processes of the affected river, the magnitude of streamflow regulation, and the post-dam sediment transport regime. We measured different magnitudes of channel adjustment on the Green River downstream from Flaming Gorge Dam, UT, USA, that are related to these three factors. Bankfull channel width decreased by an average of about 20% in the study area. In reaches with abundant debris fans and eddy deposited sand bars, the amount of channel narrowing was proportional to the decrease in specific stream power. The fan?eddy-dominated reach with the greatest decrease in stream power narrowed...
