A process-based wave-resolving hydrodynamic model (XBeach Non-Hydrostatic, ‘XBNH’) was used to create a large synthetic database for use in a “Bayesian Estimator for Wave Attack in Reef Environments” (BEWARE), relating incident hydrodynamics and coral reef geomorphology to coastal flooding hazards on reef-lined coasts. Building on previous work, BEWARE improves system understanding of reef hydrodynamics by examining the intrinsic reef and extrinsic forcing factors controlling runup and flooding on reef-lined coasts. The Bayesian estimator has high predictive skill for the XBNH model outputs that are flooding indicators, and was validated for a number of available field cases. BEWARE is a potentially powerful tool...

These data are 3D point cloud data collected by laser scanner in the Hetch Hetchy area of Yosemite National Park, USA. The data were collected to assess landscape change and vegetation response following the 2013 Rim wildfire. Filename convention: "hh_datatype_dd_ddmmyyyy_laserreturns_siteidentification". "datatype" is either "alsm" or "tls" The former was collected by the National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping for the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service, and only a small portion of those data covering this study area are included here. The latter were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey using a Riegl VZ-400 laser scanner. "dd_dd" refers to first and last day of month of data collection. "mmyyyy"...

High-precision (Real-time kinematic) Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys were conducted along the lower Rio Puerco in April 2002, January 2007, April 2010, and April 2014 to support a long-term study of geomorphic processes and the geomorphic history of the arroyo. The study reach extends from the confluence with the Rio San Jose 67 km downvalley to the old Highway 85 bridge near the USGS streamgage near Bernardo, NM. Individual shapefiles were created for data from each survey. Associated metadata files include the names of surveyors and equipment used. The survey extents varied, but all have overlapping points, including repeat surveys of arroyo cross sections. Results from analyses of these data were published...

The Edwards and Trinity aquifers are major sources of water in south-central Texas and are both classified as major aquifers by the State of Texas. The population in Hays and Comal Counties is rapidly growing, increasing demands on the area's water resources. To help effectively manage the water resources in the area, refined maps and descriptions of the geologic structures and hydrostratigraphic units (HSUs) of the aquifers are needed. This digital map database presents the detailed 1:24,000-scale bedrock hydrostratigraphic map as well as names and descriptions of the geologic and hydrostratigraphic units of the Driftwood and Wimberley 7.5-minute quadrangles in Hays and Comal Counties, Tex. These digital data...

Point cloud data collected on a steep, severely burned hillslope below Barfoot Peak near Rustler Park in the Chiricahua Mountains, AZ. The data were collected June 21, July 18, August 1, August 23, 2011 and March 14, 2012. The data were collected with a Leica Scanstation C10 High Definition Scanner. The data are delivered as georeferenced (WGS UTM zone 12N ellipsoid) and classified point clouds. The included files are: Chiri_20120314.laz Chiri_20110611.laz Chiri_20110718.laz Chiri_20110801.laz Chiri_20110823.laz
Land degradation in drylands is one of the major environmental issues of the 21st century particularly due to its impact on world food security and environmental quality. Climate change, shifts in vegetation composition, accelerated soil erosion processes, and disturbances have rendered these landscapes susceptible to rapid degradation that has important feedbacks on regional climate and desertification. Even though the role of hydrologic?aeolian erosion and vegetation dynamic processes in accelerating land degradation is well recognized, most studies have concentrated only on the role of one or two of these components, and not on the interactions among all three. Drawing on relevant published studies, here we review...

This data set contains cross-section geometry and sediment-size distribution data collected in the fall of 2015 from Muddy Creek and North Fork Gunnison River below Paonia Reservoir, Colorado. Six cross-sections were surveyed using Real-Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK-GNSS) methods to document channel geometry below the reservoir. One cross-section was surveyed on Muddy Creek below Paonia Reservoir, and five cross-sections were surveyed from North Fork Gunnison River below Paonia Reservoir. All six cross-sections are incorporated in this data release within one shapefile. Pebble-counts were performed at each of the six cross-sections to document sediment-size distributions downstream from...

The overarching goal of this research was to use site-specific data to develop local and regionally-applicable climate change models that inform management of tidal wetlands along the Pacific Northwest coast. The overarching questions were: (1) how do tidal marsh site characteristics vary across estuaries, and (2) does tidal marsh susceptibility to sea-level rise (SLR) vary along a latitudinal gradient and between estuaries? These questions are addressed in this data collection with three specific objectives: (1) measure topographical and ecological characteristics (e.g., elevation, tidal range, vegetation composition) for tidal marsh and intertidal mudflats, (2) model SLR vulnerability of these habitats, and (3)...
