Lake Poinsett is a 260-hectare (640 acres) lake located on Crowley’s Ridge in northeastern Arkansas, approximately 6 km southeast of Harrisburg, Arkansas within Poinsett County. The lake was built for recreation by the Arkansas Highway Department in 1960 by constructing a roughly 800-meter dam across the southern boundary of the Distress Creek watershed. The dam is currently operated by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). AGFC and Arkansas Natural Resources Commission (ANRC) plan to drain the lake to allow access for a series of bank stabilization and dam safety improvements. Because none of the original blueprints exist, AGFC asked the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to conduct a series of differential...

High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. Seismic data collected during this survey can help to define the rates of deposition within the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, which are the main inflows to Lake Powell. These new data are intended to improve water budget management decisions that affect the natural and recreational resources of the reservoir. Multibeam echosounder bathymetry and...

In March 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey acquired seismic reflection and refraction data along an approximately 2.8-km-long profile across northwest-trending San Andreas Fault splays located at the Dos Palmas Preserve east of Salton Sea. To acquire the reflection and refraction data, we collocated shots and geophones, spaced every 3 m along the profile. We used 933 SercelTM L40A P-wave (40-Hz vertical-component) geophones with a sensitivity of 22.34 volts/meter/second to record 925 P-wave shots. We generated P-wave data using one of two active sources: 400-grain Betsy-SeisgunTM shots at approximately every 90 m and a 3.5-kg sledgehammer and steel plate combination at every 3 m between the seisgun shots. All data...

This dataset includes the audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) sounding data collected in 2009 in and near the San Luis Basin, New Mexico. The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a series of multidisciplinary studies, including AMT surveys, in the San Luis Basin to improve understanding of the hydrogeology of the Santa Fe Group and the nature of the sedimentary deposits comprising the principal groundwater aquifers of the Rio Grande rift. The shallow unconfined and the deeper confined Santa Fe Group aquifers in the San Luis Basin are the main sources of municipal water for the region. The population of the San Luis Basin region is growing rapidly and water shortfalls could have serious consequences. Future growth and land management...

The original time series and cross power data were stored in Binary format on 3.5" disks until further conversion was needed. To convert the time series and cross power data to a format that can be used for modeling, the original binary files were converted to ASCII format using Basic 4.0 code and associated subroutines (see Magnetotelluric_Original-Code_Binary-to-Ascii.txt and Magnetotelluric_Original-Code_Binary-to-Ascii-Subroutines.txt attached to the binary data ScienceBase item). The DaR project used these converted ASCII format files to create the EDI format files included in this data release. The binary data are considered the original data for the magnetotelluric survey, therefore, they are provided with...

This dataset includes audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) sounding data collected in August 2017 in the Buffalo River watershed of northern Arkansas by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Along with geologic mapping, the USGS used AMT data at 6 sites along a southwest-northeast profile of about 7 kilometers across the inferred northeastern margin of the Bear Creek uplift within the southern Ozark Dome to better constrain the buried, northeastern margin of the Bear Creek uplift.

Large numerical grid used for finite element and finite volume analysis of induced seismicity in Paradox Basin. The grid construction used the boundaries of three sub-horizontal surfaces; the topography, and the top and bottom of the production formation is determined from drilling and seismic reflection profiling, yielding the surface topography and thickness variations in these data throughout the domain. The cell dimensions in the north and east directions are 200 m and the horizontal gridlines are oriented north-south and east-west. There are 245 elements in the east west direction, 241 elements in the north south direction, and 31 elements in the vertical, extending from the surface to 15 km depth. The grid...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected over 1,840 physical property measurements on selected plutons in the Great Basin, primarily in California and Nevada. Data include station identifier, geographic coordinates, rock type, density, magnetic susceptibility, remanent magnetization, declination, and inclination where available. Data are presented in ASCII format and include density and magnetic property data in pluton_data.csv, a data dictionary describing the data fields in data_dictionary.csv, and a rock data dictionary listing rock types in rock_dictionary.csv. Preliminary results and interpretation were described by Ponce and others (2010) and some samples are from Sikora and others (1991). References: Ponce,...

Included here are the model, data, and reponse files used to create the 2D electrical resistivity model. Plots of the data and model response are provided as well as one of the model. The data, model, mesh, regularization, and response files are provided in Occam2D format. See https://marineemlab.ucsd.edu/Projects/Occam/2DMT/index.html for details on file format. This data product includes Occam2D data, model, response, and mesh files such that anyone can reproduce the model results. To produce the 2D model the data are rotated to principle strike direction estimated from the phase tensor azimuth, which was nominaly geomagnetic north. The station locations are projected onto a profile line N66E. Bad data points...

In spring and summer 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Gas Hydrates Project conducted two cruises aboard the research vessel Hugh R. Sharp to explore the geology, chemistry, ecology, physics, and oceanography of sea-floor methane seeps and water column gas plumes on the northern U.S. Atlantic margin between the Baltimore and Keller Canyons. Split-beam and multibeam echo sounders and a chirp subbottom profiler were deployed during the cruises to map water column backscatter, sea-floor bathymetry and backscatter, and subsurface stratigraphy associated with known and undiscovered sea-floor methane seeps. The first cruise, known as the Interagency Mission for Methane Research on Seafloor Seeps and designated as field...

The 2018 KÄ«lauea eruption and caldera collapse generated intense cycles of seismicity tied to repeated large seismic (Mw ~5) collapse events associated with magma withdrawal from beneath the summit. To gain insight into the underlying dynamics and aid eruption response, we applied waveform-based earthquake detection and double-difference location as the eruption unfolded. Here, we augment these rapid results by grouping events based on patterns of correlation-derived phase polarities across the network. From April 29 to August 6, bracketing the eruption, we used ~2800 events cataloged by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to detect and precisely locate 44,000+ earthquakes. Resulting hypocentroids resolve complex,...

This dataset consists of 176 wideband magnetotelluric (MT) stations collected from 2015-2019 across parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) acquired these data as part of regional investigations into the geologic and tectonic framework of the area and to support mineral resource investigations. These data have been used to generate a 3D regional conductivity model of the area. Files included in this publication include measured electric- and magnetic-field time series as well as estimated impedance and vertical-magnetic field transfer functions. The data included here are for MT station pen107 in the Penokean Orogeny survey region. A shapefile with station...
