Incision rates of the Colorado River are integral to understanding the development of the Colorado Plateau. Here we calculate episodic incision rates of the Colorado River based on absolute ages of two levels of Quaternary deposits adjacent to Glen Canyon, Utah, along the north flank of Navajo Mountain. Minimum surface ages are determined by a combination of cosmogenic radionuclide surface exposure ages, uranium series and soil-development formation times. Bedrock incision rates of the Colorado River between c. 500 ka and c. 250 ka, and c. 250 ka to present are c. 0·4 m ka−1 and c. 0·7 m ka−1, respectively. These rates are more than double the rates reported in the Grand Canyon, suggesting that the Colorado...

These data were compiled for investigating the relationship between acoustic backscattering by riverbeds composed of various riverbed substrates (bed sediment), and for developing and testing a probabilistic model for substrate classification based on high-frequency multibeam acoustic backscatter. The model is described in Buscombe et al. (2017). The data consist of various quantities on coincident grids, from various sites along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, including water depth, bed roughness, the area (or footprint) of the acoustic beam, unfiltered and filtered backscatter magnitude, sediment classification (for each location, 1 of 5 sediment classes in a categorical scheme), and the probabilities for...
High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. Seismic data collected during this survey can help to define the rates of deposition within the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, which are the main inflows to Lake Powell. These new data are intended to improve water budget management decisions that affect the natural and recreational resources of the reservoir. Multibeam echosounder bathymetry and...

These data were collected by recreational river runners through a community science effort where we provided river runners with light trapping equipment to sample emergent aquatic insects each night of their expeditions....
Lake Powell retains most of the phosphorus that it receives, leading to downstream phosphorus limitation. These data were compiled to examine controls on phosphorus cycling below Lake Powell in the Colorado River and from storm inputs from the Paria River. Objectives of our study were to determine how several forms of phosphorus, both organic and inorganic, were cycled under varying dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH, reflecting the range of values observed in the river over the years. These data represent nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, and carbon concentrations, water quality parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature), sediment composition, total protein, and extracellular enzyme activity (alkaline phosphatase)....
These data were compiled to provide a resource for other researchers interested in water-surface elevations and flow velocity across a wide range of discharge in the study reach for the project. These data represent total vegetation and surface water along approximately 12 kilometers of the Paria River upstream from the confluence of the Colorado River at Lees Ferry, Arizona. They are derived from airborne, multispectral imagery obtained in late May 2009, 2013, and 2021, collected with a push-broom sensor with 4 spectral bands depicting Blue, Green, Red and Near-Infrared wavelengths at a spatial resolution of 20 centimeters. The vegetation classification data were created using a supervised classification algorithm provided by Harris Geospatial in ENVI version 5.6.3 (Exelis Visual Information Solutions, Boulder, Colorado). The water data were created using a Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index...
These data are aerial image-derived, classification maps of tamarisk (Tamarisk spp.) in the riparian zone of the Colorado River from Glen Canyon Dam to Separation Canyon, a total river distance of 412 km. The classification maps are published in GIS vector format. Two maps are published: 1) a classification of tamarisk from a 0.2 m resolution multispectral image dataset acquired in May 2009 (Tamarisk Classification 2009), and 2) a classification of tamarisk impacted by the tamarisk beetle (Diorhabda carinulata) from a 0.2 m resolution multispectral image dataset acquired in May 2013 (Beetle Impact Classification 2013). Tamarisk presence in 2009 was classified using the Mahalanobis Distance method with a total of...
These data are the primary data used to model rainbow trout growth in Glen Canyon. Fish growth data were collected from nighttime boat electrofishing field campaigns conducted five to six times per year in April, July, September, and January, from April 2012 through November 2021 for a total of 9798 observations of mark-recapture-based growth. Sampling was conducted in a five km reach in the lower portion of the Glen Canyon tailwater (3.7-8.9 km upstream of Lees Ferry, AZ). Two nights of sampling occurred on each trip, with the central 2-3 km of the reach sampled on both nights. After capture, fish were kept in aerated 40-L buckets and transported to a central processing location. Groups of 10-15 fish were anesthetized...
These data were compiled to investigate the control of drying on the aeolian transport of river-sourced sand. Objectives of our study were to to examine aeolian sediment transport during a five-day period of low steady river flow on a river sandbar and adjacent aeolian dunefield. These data represent the observed and theoretical threshold fiction velocities for aeolian sediment transport, as well as the grain size, sediment moisture content, surface roughness and other characteristics of the sandbar and sand dune surfaces. These data were collected at a sandbar and aeolian sand dune along the Colorado River approximately 19 km downstream from Glen Canyon Dam at Lees Ferry, Arizona, USA from March 15 to 20, 2021....
These data were compiled as part of a long-term (1964 - 2022) water quality monitoring program at Lake Powell. Objectives of our study were to release a consistent record of long-term water quality data. The 58-year limnology dataset captures some water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, major ions, total suspended solids) from reservoir filling to present day. It also contains a 38-year record of secchi depth, and a ~30-year record of nutrients, phytoplankton, and zooplankton assemblages. The data were collected from various sites within the Lake Powell reservoir and the Glen Canyon dam. Regular monthly sampling occurred at three sites near the dam and reservoir-wide sampling was generally conducted quarterly,...

These data were compiled to test hypotheses regarding drivers of movement of brown trout. Objectives of our study were to test whether the degree of movement varied in response to placement of a weir in Bright Angel Creek, fall timed flooding events, or simply seasonal changes. These data represent summarized capture histories of brown trout in terms of states based on physical locations, data on removal efforts in Bright Angel Creek, and summaries of effort in the mainstem Colorado River. These data were collected at several locations along the Colorado River in Glen and Grand Canyon, including Bright Angel Creek from 2011 to 2018. These data were collected by U.S. Geological Survey, National Park Service, and...
Glen Canyon Institute (GCI) was founded in 1996 as a charitable 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with the mission of restoring a healthy Colorado River through Glen Canyon. Leading the movement to restore this uniquely beautiful place, Glen Canyon Institute immediately began work to conduct scientific studies on the impacts of Glen Canyon Dam, and compiled the results in the Citizen's Environmental Assessment (CEA), which was released in 2001. Around that same time, a series of low-runoff years began dropping reservoir levels at Lake Powell significantly, reaching elevation 3555, down 145 feet and only 33% of full, on April 8, 2005. The shrinking reservoir exposed more than 40 miles of the mainstem Colorado and San...
These data were collected by the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC) to support riparian vegetation monitoring along the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and the full pool level of Lake Mead. The objectives of the GCMRC riparian vegetation monitoring program are to annually measure and summarize the status (composition and cover) of native and non-native vascular plant species within the riparian zone of the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Mead, assess change in the vegetation composition and cover in the riparian zone, as related to geomorphic setting and dam operations, particularly flow regime, and collect data in a manner that can be used by multiple stakeholders and is...
These data are a species-level classification map of riparian vegetation in the Colorado River riparian corridor in Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA. The classification is derived from 0.2 m pixel resolution multispectral aerial imagery acquired in May 2013. The classification spans the riparian zone of the river corridor between Glen Canyon Dam near Page, Arizona, and Lake Mead at Pearce Ferry, Arizona. The classification is divided into 5 distinct reaches of the river: Glen Canyon, Marble Canyon, Eastern Grand Canyon, Western Grand Canyon upstream of Diamond Creek, and Western Grand Canyon downstream of Diamond Creek. The method used for classification was a combination of supervised Classification And Regression Tree...
These data were compiled to assess physiological responses of plants to short-term changes in streamflow, both increased and decreased. Objective(s) of our study were to determine the degree to which plants with different habitat preferences and functional strategies responded to short-term increases or decreases in the elevation of the water table. These data represent streamflow rates, temperature, and metrics of plant water status. These data were collected in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area from March 13-27, 2021, and collected by the U.S. Geological Survey-Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center. Streamflow data were obtained from the Lees Ferry gage station, and temperature data were obtained from...
These data are classified maps of water in the Colorado River at a discharge of approximately 227 meters squared/second in Grand Canyon from Glen Canyon Dam to Pearce Ferry in Arizona. The data are derived from interpretation of multispectral high resolution airborne imagery that was acquired in May 2013. The water classification data have the same 0.2-meter ground resolution as the imagery. These data have not undergone a statistical accuracy assessment, but they are based on methods that included image interpretation to exhaustively identify water which have been shown to produce very high classification accuracies and excellent correlation between maps of total vegetation produced by independent analysts and...
