The Great Basin is characterized by strong patterns of precipitation along approximate north-south gradients (Miller and others, 2013). Hence, we used a hydrographic boundary layer developed by Mason (1999), to divide the region-wide extent of sage-grouse habitat mapping analysis into North and South regions that align coarsely with respective mesic (wet) and xeric (dry) regions of the state. Flood regions are based largely on patterns of snowmelt, summer thunderstorms or cyclonic rainfall, and the 8-digit Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD, 2015) was used to select appropriate watersheds within our mapping extent that corresponded to the Mason (1999) boundary. Slight adjustments, made in ArcMap 10.3, included joining...

This shapefile represents proposed management categories (Core, Priority, General, and Non-Habitat) derived from the intersection of habitat suitability categories and lek space use. Habitat suitability categories were derived from a composite, continuous surface of sage-grouse habitat suitability index (HSI) values for Nevada and northeastern California formed from the multiplicative product of the spring, summer, and winter HSI surfaces.

This raster dataset depicts percent canopy cover derived from 1-m conifer classifications. Conifer features were classified from 2010, 2012, and 2013 NAIP Digital Ortho Quarter Quads (DOQQ) using the Feature Analyst 5.0 extension for ArcGIS 10.1. Tiles were organized and grouped by Nevada Department of Wildlife Population Management Unit (PMU) locations, plus a 10 km area beyond the PMU extent. Analysts visually identified conifers in the imagery using false color infrared settings and digitized multiple trees per tile as training locations for classification. After performing hierarchical learning and clutter removal with Feature Analyst to remove non-conifer features on output shapefiles, the conifer polygons...

This dataset contains information regarding the acreages of land currently (as of 2004) enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) distributed by county and the year the CRP contract was initiated (1987-2004, excluding 1994 and 1995). Additionally, it contains total acreages of land enrolled in the CRP distributed by county and the contract year (1987-2003). USDA Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them safeguard environmentally sensitive land. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resource-conserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat. In return, FSA...

Topography provides information about the structural controls of the Great Basin and therefore information that may be used to identify favorable structural settings for geothermal systems. Specifically, local relative topography gives information about locations of faults and fault intersections relative to mountains, valleys, or at the transitions between. As part of U.S. Geological Survey efforts to engineer features that are useful for predicting geothermal resources, we construct a detrended elevation map that emphasizes local relative topography and highlights features that geologists use for identifying geothermal systems (i.e., providing machine learning algorithms with features that may improve predictive...

This shapefile represents habitat suitability categories (High, Moderate, Low, and Non-Habitat) derived from a composite, continuous surface of sage-grouse habitat suitability index (HIS, created using ArcGIS 10.2.2) values for Nevada and northeastern California during spring, which is a surrogate for habitat conditions during the sage-grouse breeding and nesting period.

The spatial context of invasions is increasingly recognized as important for the success and efficiency of management actions. This information can be key for managing invasive grasses that threaten native ecosystems. We calculated landscape metrics and circuit-based centrality for invasive grasses using a source input raster of weighted-average annual herbaceous cover from 2016-2018 (Maestas et al. 2020, 30 meter resolution) in the Great Basin, USA. This shapefile data product includes the summarized landscape metrics and connectivity metrics for 15 kilometer grid cells (n = 2408) across the Great Basin, USA. Metrics for each grid cell include: mean patch area (area_mn), class area (ca), number of patches (np),...

Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) are public-private partnerships composed of states, tribes, federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, universities, international jurisdictions, and others working together to address landscape and seascape scale conservation issues. LCCs inform resource management decisions to address broad-scale stressors-including habitat fragmentation, genetic isolation, spread of invasive species, and water scarcity-all of which are magnified by a rapidly changing climate. For further information go to https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog. The previous 2011 LCC Network Areas data is available at https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/52f2735ee4b0a6f0bd498c2f

These contours represent static groundwater levels based on depth-to-water measurements in Smith Valley and Mason Valley, Nevada, for fall 2006. Groundwater-level contours were first published by Lopes and Allander (2009) and subsequently published electronically by Medina and others (2022). Since the time of the dataset's original publication, the position and land-surface altitude at 23 monitoring wells in Smith Valley used to develop the original 2006 groundwater-level contours have been updated. As such, 10 contours in Smith Valley were revised using the updated monitoring well locations and land-surface altitudes while maintaining, to the extent possible, the original interpretation made by Lopes and Allander...

The dataset delineates ecological sections within California deserts. These deserts occupy the southeastern portion of California and include two ecoregional provinces comprised of five desert regions ("ecological sections"; Miles and Goudey 1997). The American Semi-Desert and Desert Province (warm deserts) includes the Mojave Desert, Sonoran Desert, and Colorado Desert sections in the southern 83% of the California desert. The Intermountain Semi-Desert Province (cold deserts) includes the Southeastern Great Basin and Mono sections in the northern 17% of the region.

These contours represent water levels based on depth-to-groundwater measurements made at 98 wells in July of 2012 in the Lahontan Valley near Fallon, NV. Water level measurements collected before or after July of 2012 were included only in cases where the well was being pumped or was inaccessible in July 2012. The contours were developed to compare with 1992 water level altitude contoured by Seiler and Allander (1993). These contours represent static groundwater levels based on depth-to-water measurements made at 96 monitoring wells during water years 1991-1995 in Smith Valley and Mason Valley, Nevada. For each monitoring well, the median groundwater-level altitude during the five-year period (1991-1995) was used for developing the groundwater-level contours. Depth-to-water measurements were collected by the USGS and the Nevada Division of Water Resources (NDWR).
