This digital dataset represents the 3D fault and stratigraphic surfaces of the three dimensional geologic map of the southeastern Gabbs Valley, Nevada. The data define the easting, northing, and elevations (meters, NAD 83 Zone 11N) of points that define the top and bottom contacts of stratigraphic units and fault surfaces.

This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 2003 along a north-south profile west of Wendover, Nevada. It is important to know whether major mining districts in the Northern Nevada Gold Province are underlain by rocks of the Archean Wyoming craton, which are known to contain orogenic gold deposits, or by accreted rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Mojave province. It is also important to know the location and orientation of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone between these provinces as well as major basement structures within these terranes because they may influence subsequent patterns of sedimentation, deformation, magmatism, and hydrothermal activity. This study was funded by the U.S....

Nevada and northeastern California conifer features were classified from 2010, 2012, and 2013 NAIP Digital Ortho Quarter Quads (DOQQs) using the Feature Analyst 5.0 extension for ArcGIS 10.1. DOQQs were organized and grouped by Nevada Department of Wildlife Population Management Unit (PMU) locations, plus a 10 km area beyond the PMU extent. The polygons in this file represent dissolved boundaries of NAIP DOQQ polygons that were associated with the nearest PMU that they intersected. Many DOQQs had to be assigned to a PMU manually because they occurred beyond the original PMU boundary or fell along the boundary between two or more PMUs. Larger PMUs, such as Monitor and Quinn, were divided into smaller, more manageable,...

This shapefile represents habitat suitability categories (High, Moderate, Low, and Non-Habitat) derived from a composite, continuous surface of sage-grouse habitat suitability index (HSI) values for Nevada and northeastern California formed from the multiplicative product of the spring, summer, and winter HSI surfaces.

The Rapid Assessment (RA) vegetation dynamics data help to synthesize the best available knowledge of vegetation dynamics and quantify the natural range of variability in vegetation composition and structure. Models consist of two components: (1) a comprehensive description and (2) a quantitative, state-and-transition (box) model, created in the public domain software VDDT (Vegetation Dynamics Development Tool; Beukema et al. 2003). RA vegetation models were based on a simple, standardized five-box model that combines three generic succession stages with two canopy cover classes. Each class is specifically defined for individual models. Variations on this standardized model were also developed. Models were developed...

This dataset combines the work of several different projects to create a seamless data set for the contiguous United States. Data from four regional Gap Analysis Projects and the LANDFIRE project were combined to make this dataset. In the northwestern United States (Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington and Wyoming) data in this map came from the Northwest Gap Analysis Project. In the southwestern United States (Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah) data used in this map came from the Southwest Gap Analysis Project. The data for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia came from the Southeast Gap Analysis Project and the California data was...

Understanding the terrestrial carbon budget, in particular the strength of the terrestrial carbon sink, is important in the context of global climate change. Considerable attention has been given to woody encroachment in the western US and the role it might play as a carbon sink; however, in many parts of the western US the reverse process is also occurring. The conversion of woody shrublands to annual grasslands involves the invasion of non-native cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) which in turn leads to increased frequency and extent of fires. We compared carbon storage in adjacent plots of invasive grassland and native shrubland. We scaled-up the impact of this ecosystem shift using regional maps of the current invasion...
Limited information exists of the differences in soil physical and hydrologic properties in invasive Bromus tectorum L. (BT) (cheatgrass) habitats versus native Artemisia tridentata Nutt. (AT) (big sagebrush) habitats. Our objective was to assess differences in soil physical and hydrological properties by comparing measures of soil particle size; aggregate stability; hydrophobicity; bulk density; penetration resistance; surface roughness; and infiltration (double-ring and mini-disk tension infiltrometer) between habitats. BT sites were sampled following AT stand replacing fires that resulted in near continuous BT establishment. Sites characterized by AT, and not burned, were sampled as controls. Significantly lower...

We systematically surveyed federal and state wildlife biologists, hydrological specialists, non-profit organizations, and working groups focused on beaver or wetland restoration in the western U.S. We focused primarily on contacting land managers from states containing some portion of the Great Basin, although many of the projects described in surveys fell outside of this watershed. Some land managers suggested colleagues who might be interested in participating in our study and these individuals were added to our list of contacts. We also performed a literature search using Google Scholar. We included only articles that were focused on primary research performed in the arid or semi-arid western US. We compiled...

This shapefile represents habitat suitability categories (High, Moderate, Low, and Non-Habitat) derived from a composite, continuous surface of sage-grouse habitat suitability index (HSI) values for northeastern California during summer (July to mid-October)¸ which is a surrogate for habitat conditions during the sage-grouse brood-rearing period.

Environmental Analysis Data: These data were compiled to investigate the complex interactions between environmental gradients and geographic distance across the Intermountain West of the western United States. Due to complex topography, physiographic heterogeneity, and complicated relationships with large bodies of water, spatial autocorrelation of environmental similarity may be expected. We provide an R script (VarioAnalysis.R) that uses four associated data files (annualprecip.csv, annualSWA.csv, annualtemp.csv, key.csv) to reproduce Figure 3 in Massatti et al. 2020 (see Larger Work Citation). The data files contain information on yearly soil water availability, temperature, and precipitation, which are summed...

This raster portrays the distribution of sagebrush within the geographic extent of the sagebrush biome in the United States. It was created for the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency’s (WAFWA) Sagebrush Conservation Strategy publication as a visual for the schematic figures and to calculate summary statistics. This distribution incorporates the most recently available sagebrush cover mapping (Xian et al. 2015, Rigge et al. 2019) and classified LANDFIRE EVT (Department of Ecosystem Science, University of Wyoming 2016). Both datasets were rigorously evaluated and extensive ground measurements taken to evaluate accuracy by the respective authors. We created a combined binary sagebrush distribution by classifying...

The dataset includes several variables sampled across 54 recently burned aspen sites, with data collected in 2014 and 2015. Additionally, the dataset includes mean 30-year (1980-2008) and mean six year ‘fire-regen period’ (i.e., fire year and five years after fire) climate values for each site. The climate data presented here were used to calculate explanatory variables used in analysis, as outlined in the publication. Plots were located across a regional climate gradient spanning from the north-central Great Basin to the northeastern portion of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (USA). Several attributes (e.g. tree characteristics, evidence of animal herbivory, shrub cover) were sampled at each plot. All trees present...

This data release presents data used for analyzing spatial and temporal differences in soil surface roughness within selected biocrust communities. These records were collected by ground-based lidar for 121, 1m x 3m soil plots with biological soil crusts (biocrusts). Roughness was estimated from 5 mm resolution data (CloudCompare v. 2.10.2, 2019) for two Great Basin Desert sites (UTTR-1; UTTR-2) in December 2015 and one Chihuahuan Desert site (JER) in February 2016. Data were again collected in June 2018 for UTTR-1 and UTTR-2. Additional field and laboratory data were included within this study to understand differences in soil surface roughness between UTTR and JER as well as between the 2016 and 2018 surveys at...
