A method was described for determination of trace levels of silicon by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) from hydrofluoric (HF) digests of biological samples. The volatility of silicon in HF digests was examined with synthetic solutions as well as soil and mine waste samples. A digestion scheme was optimized to achieve complete dissolution, avoid loss of volatile silicon species and produce sample solutions that can be directly analyzed by ICP-MS. Surveys for immature life stages of the Samoan swallowtail butterfly (Papilio godeffroyi) were conducted on 117 individually marked host trees (Micromelum minutum) in eight forest stands on Tutuila Island, American Samoa, at approximately monthly intervals during 2013-2014. The eight sites were mostly in or adjacent to the National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), but one site was sampled near the western tip of Tutuila, outside NPSA. An additional 74 host trees were assessed for phenological status in the eight stands but were not surveyed for Papilio. This project evaluates the connections between climate change impacts and health in Bristol Bay communities. Climate change impacts were assessed through the lens of public health, with an eye towards the potential effects on disease, injury, food and water security, and mental health. Three focal communities were included in this assessment: Nondalton, a lake community, Levelock, a river community, and Pilot Point, a coastal community. The resulting assessment reports will be used to assist focal communities, as well as neighboring communities, in addressing climate-change related issues.

Using the horizontal-to-vertical spectral-ratio (HVSR) method, we infer regolith thickness (i.e., depth to bedrock) throughout the Farmington River Watershed, CT, USA. Between Nov. 2019 and Nov. 2020, MOHO Tromino Model TEP-3C (MOHO, S.R.L.) three-component seismometers collected passive seismic recordings along the Farmington River and the upstream West Branch of Salmon Brook. From these recordings, we derived resonance frequencies using the GRILLA software (MOHO, S.R.L.), and then inferred potential regolith thicknesses based on likely shear wave velocities, Vs, intrinsic to the underlying sediment. The data presented here are blacklegged tick nymph densities, white-tailed deer densities, and Borrelia burgdorferi (causative agent of Lyme disease) prevalences for eight national parks in the eastern United States from 2014-2022.
Research and surveillance reports have documented a significant increase in coal workers' pneumoconiosis, including the most severe forms of progressive massive fibrosis and rapidly progressive pneumoconiosis in U.S. coal miners, particularly those in Appalachian coalfields. Several possible explanations for these observations include excessive exposures to total respirable dust, increased exposure to freshly fractured silica and silicates, or greater exposure to smaller particles that may be the result of changing mining practices. This dataset contains the chemical and morphological characteristics of particulate matter retrieved from lung tissue slices of historical and contemporary miners.

Model archive summary (MAS) describing the development of a continuous 15-minute suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) time series regression model for the site: Grant Line Canal Near Tracy, California (U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) site # 11313240). The SSC time series is computed from instream turbidity data that is managed by the California Department of Water Resources (CDWR) using a YSI 6-series multi-parameter water quality sonde. This metadata record documents a set of 118 comma delimited files and a data dictionary describing the inputs for the U.S. Geological Survey Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) which is used to drive the National Hydrologic Model (NHM) for the United States-Canada transboundary domain. The National Hydrologic Model database contains parameters for hydrologic response units (HRUs) and stream segments needed to run the NHM. These parameters are generated using python scripts to process input datasets such as digital elevation models, soil maps, and land cover classifications.
