A joint venture involving the National Atlas programs in Canada (Natural Resources Canada), Mexico (Instituto Nacional de Estad¿stica Geograf¿a e Inform¿tica), and the United States (U.S. Geological Survey), as well as the North American Commission for Environmental Co-operation, has led to the release (June 2004) of several new products: an updated paper map of North America, and its associated geospatial data sets and their metadata. These data sets are available online from each of the partner countries both for visualization and download. The North American Atlas data are standardized geospatial data sets at 1:10,000,000 scale. A variety of basic data layers (e.g. roads, railroads, populated places, political...

The U.S. Department of Energy initiated a remedial investigation of the Clinch River/Poplar Creek system Superfund Site in 1989. This site, located in eastern Tennessee near Oak Ridge, consists of 70 river kilometers and 40 km(2) of surface area. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nature and extent of contamination, perform an ecological and human health risk assessment, and evaluate possible remedial alternatives. This introductory article summarizes the environmental setting, the contamination history, and the study approach and provides some general results of the site characterization. Subsequent papers in this series describe the ecological risks to fish, piscivorous and insectivorous wildlife, and...

This geospatial dataset is a hydrologic unit boundary layer for the Sub-watershed (12-digit) level. The dataset is a subset of the 6th level (field) hydrologic unit boundaries from the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) layer for Oregon. Hydrologic units in the data set represent drainage areas delineated to the 6th level drainage systems. Their boundaries are defined by hydrographic and topographic criteria that delineate an area of land upstream from a specific point on a river, stream, or similar surface waters. Boundaries within the this data set were delineated by Pacific Northwest (PNW) Hydrography Framework Partners and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to meet state requirements and to contribute...

The Monthly Projected Runoff (RUNO) data sets are part of the downscaled global climate models created for the 2008 California climate change assessment. These files are made from daily data and are monthly mean values in millimeters per month. RUNO layers have been created through a Bias Corrected Statistical Downscaling (BCSD) approach and are currently available for the cnrmcm3, gfdlcm21, ncarccsm3, and ncarpcm1 models under the A2 and B1 scenarios. The BCSD data cover 31.9375N to 43.9375N and 124.5625W to 113.0625W. The VIC grid is a 1/8th degree grid so this makes a "box" of 93 longitudes by 97 latitudes. The VIC computations are done over land only. For the 93x97 box there would be a total of 9021 points and...
Temporal variations in the relationships among plant nutrient concentrations, soil properties and arbuscular-mycorrhizal (AM) fungal dynamics were studied along a topographic and saline gradient in a temperate grassland soil. Soil and plant (Lotus tenuis, Paspalum vaginatum, Stenotaphrum secundatum) samples were collected on four seasonally based occasions. The morphology of AM root colonization had a similar pattern in the plants studied. Maximum arbuscular colonization occurred at the beginning of the growing season in late winter and was minimal in late summer, but maximal vesicular colonization occurred in summer and was minimal in winter, suggesting a preferential production of these morphological phases by...

What this map layer shows: The locations of over 4,000 stream gaging stations that provide updated streamflow information to the National Atlas every few hours. Background Information The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Resources program, in cooperation with more than 800 Federal, State, and local agencies, operates a streamflow gaging-station network to collect nationally consistent information about the Nation's water resources and to help define and manage those resources. Individual stream-gaging stations are supported for specific purposes, such as water allocation, reservoir operations, or the regulation of permit requirements. However, the data are also used for flood hazard mitigation by the National...

Metadata created by USGS staff. Data downloaded from USGS WaterWatch (http://water.usgs.gov/waterwatch) 5/13/08. These data represent the locations of USGS streamgages. Please note: data tagged in the attributes represents conditions from the day the data was downloaded. See hyperlinked URL in attributes for current conditions at a streamgage. Original File Name: realstx The "Real-time streamflow" map tracks short-term changes (over several hours) in rivers and streams. Although the general appearance of the map changes very little from one hour to the next, individual sites may change rapidly in response to major rain events or to reservoir releases.

Note: NED data can be accessed through The National Map (USGS). Instructions are available on The National Map Viewer homepage. The National Elevation Dataset (NED) is the primary elevation data product produced and distributed by the USGS. The NED provides the best available public domain raster elevation data of the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and territorial islands in a seamless format. The NED is derived from diverse source data, processed to a common coordinate system and unit of vertical measure. All NED data are distributed in geographic coordinates in units of decimal degrees, and in conformance with the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83). All elevation values are provided in units of...

This map layer contains hydrologic unit boundaries and codes for the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was revised for inclusion in the National Atlas of the United States of America, and updated to match the streams file created by the USGS National Mapping Division (NMD) for the National Atlas of the United States of America. This is a revised version of the November 2002 map layer.

Planning for the effects of climate change on natural resources often requires detailed projections of future climate at finer spatial scales consistent with the processes managers typically consider. While it is numerically possible to produce downscaled climate at very fine scales (< 5km), accurate estimation at these scales is difficult and less certain without very detailed local information. Both the absence of a sufficiently dense network of long-term climate observations and the presence of local factors such as topography and land surface feedbacks from vegetation and snowpack contribute to the uncertainties of localized projections. To meet the needs of managers for developing adaptation strategies, vulnerability...

This project inventories and reviews available water resource models used to meet multiple (and often competing) water resource management objectives. Water resource modeling tools have been developed for many different regions and sub-basins of the Rio Grande/Bravo (RGB). Each of these tools have specific objectives, whether it is to explore drought mitigation alternatives, conflict resolution, climate change evaluation, tradeoff and economic synergies, water allocation, reservoir operations, or collaborative planning. We specifically evaluate the applicability of those models to evaluating trade-offs in meeting societal and environmental flow requirements to recover native ecosystems. This work communicates the...
