Floodplain inundation is believed to be the dominant physical driver of an array of ecosystem patterns and processes in the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). Here, we present the results of a geospatial surface-water connectivity model in support of ecological investigations fully described in the USGS Open File Report entitled “Indicators of Ecosystem Structure and Function for the Upper Mississippi River System” (De Jager et al., in review). Briefly, we identified likely instances of floodplain submergence by comparing a daily time series of gage-derived water surface elevations to topo-bathymetric data modified to account for slopes and hydrologic routing. The resulting raster attribute table contains columns...

An extreme gradient boosting (XGB) machine learning model was developed to predict the distribution of nitrate in shallow groundwater across the conterminous United States (CONUS). Nitrate was predicted at a 1-square-kilometer (km) resolution at a depth below the water table of 10 m. The model builds off a previous XGB machine learning model developed to predict nitrate at domestic and public supply groundwater zones (Ransom and others, 2022) by incorporating additional monitoring well samples and modifying and adding predictor variables. The shallow zone model included variables representing well characteristics, hydrologic conditions, soil type, geology, climate, oxidation/reduction, and nitrogen inputs. Predictor...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides zooplankton data collected from Cheney Reservoir, Kansas, during October 2008 through October 2022. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. This data release was produced in compliance with the open data requirements as a way to make scientific products associated with USGS research efforts and publications available to the public. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at the long-term sampling site on Cheney Reservoir located near the dam (USGS station identification number 07144790). Zooplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level...

This dataset contains water temperature data collected by boat tow on August 30, 2019 between approximately 8:00 AM and 12:15 PM Central Standard Time (CST) in the Milwaukee Estuary of Lake Michigan. The data includes measured water temperatures, depth of collection, water column depth, time of collection, and geospatial coordinates. The objective of this data collection was to produce longitudinal temperature profiles for analyses of water temperature fluctuation in the estuary in order to examine thermal interaction between the lake and river influences.

This data release contains a comma-delimited ascii file of six same-day, discrete discharge measurements made at sites along selected reaches of South Hālawa Stream, North Hālawa Stream, and Hālawa Stream, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi on June 2, 2022. These discrete discharge measurements form what is commonly referred to as a “seepage run.” The intent of the seepage run is to quantify the spatial distribution of streamflow along the reach during fair-weather, low-flow conditions, generally characterized by negligible direct runoff within the reach. The measurements can be used to characterize the net seepage of water into (water gain) or out of (water loss) the stream channel between measurement sites provided that the measurements...

This data release contains inputs and outputs needed to reproduce the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model findings for the publication: Fortini, L.B., Leopold, C.R., Perkins, K., Chadwick, O.A., Yelenik, S.G., Jacobi, J.D., Bishaw, K., II, Gregg, M. and Rosa, S., 2020, Local to landscape-level controls of water fluxes through Hawaiian forests: Effects of invasive animals and plants on soil infiltration capacity across substrate and moisture gradients, University of Hawai'i at Hilo Hawai`i Cooperative Studies Unit Technical Report HCSU-TR095, 93p., http://hdl.handle.net/10790/5282. The SWAT model, a physically based, semi-distributed, continuous model, was used to develop a watershed model for Hanalei, Kauaʻi...

The High Resolution National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus HR) is an integrated set of geospatial data layers, including the best available National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), the 10-meter 3D Elevation Program Digital Elevation Model (3DEP DEM), and the National Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD). The NHDPlus HR combines the NHD, 3DEP DEMs, and WBD to create a stream network with linear referencing, feature naming, "value added attributes" (VAAs), elevation-derived catchments, and other features for hydrologic data analysis. The stream network with linear referencing is a system of data relationships applied to hydrographic systems so that one stream reach "flows" into another and "events" can be tied to and traced...

The U.S. Geological Survey Central Midwest Water Science Center completed a report (Over and others, 2023) documenting the methods, results, and applications of an updated flood-frequency study for the State of Illinois. This data release contains data related to the analysis completed to determine peak-flow quantiles (flood frequency estimates) at streamgages in Illinois for 50-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities (AEPs), as well as data used to develop regional regression equations that relate the peak-flow quantiles and the basin characteristics of selected streamgages in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, based on data through water year 2017 (a water year is the period...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. A digital three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework model (HFM) represents the geometry and extent of hydrogeologic units (HGUs) and major structures in the Death Valley regional ground-water flow system (DVRFS). The HFM thickness data represent the geometry of the HFM by defining the thicknesses of the 27 HGUs in an approximately 45,000 square-kilometer region of southern Nevada and California (see "Larger Work Citation", Chapter...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. The U.S. Geological Survey developed this dataset as part of the Colorado Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project (FRIRP). One goal of the FRIRP was to provide information on the availability of those hydrogeologic resources that are either critical to maintaining infrastructure along the northern Front Range or that may become less available because of urban expansion in the northern Front Range. This dataset extends from the...

This data set consists of digital water-table contours for the Mojave River, the Morongo and the Fort Irwin Ground-Water Basins. The U.S. Geological Survey constructed a water-table map of the Mojave River, the Morongo and the Fort Irwin Ground-Water Basins for ground-water levels measured during the period January-September 1996. Water-level data were collected from 632 wells to construct the contours. The water-table contours were...
