Note: NED data can be accessed through The National Map (USGS). Instructions are available on The National Map Viewer homepage. The National Elevation Dataset (NED) is the primary elevation data product produced and distributed by the USGS. The NED provides the best available public domain raster elevation data of the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and territorial islands in a seamless format. The NED is derived from diverse source data, processed to a common coordinate system and unit of vertical measure. All NED data are distributed in geographic coordinates in units of decimal degrees, and in conformance with the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83). All elevation values are provided in units of...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with Connecticut Department of Transportation, completed a study to improve flood-frequency estimates in Connecticut. This companion data release is a Microsoft Excel workbook for: (1) computing flood discharges for the 50- to 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities from peak-flow regression equations, and (2) computing additional prediction intervals, not available through the USGS StreamStats web application. The current StreamStats application (version 4) only computes the 90-percent prediction interval for stream sites in Connecticut. The Excel workbook can be used to compute the 70-, 80-, 90-, 95-, and 99-percent prediction intervals. The prediction interval...

This Data Release presents multi-agency data for selenium concentrations in ecosystem media that includes water column, suspended particulate material, zooplankton, invertebrates, and fish. Because the data are compiled from multiple sources, the significant figures used to report contaminant concentrations and other metrics may not be internally consistent. These data will serve as the basis for ecosystem-scale modeling of Lake Koocanusa, a bi-national reservoir in Montana and British Columbia. Spreadsheets are ordered in a food-web format to facilitate modeling that emphasizes spatially and temporally paired data. Selenium concentrations are species-specific for fish and taxa-specific for invertebrates to address...

Evaluating Decadal Changes in Groundwater Quality: Groundwater-quality data were collected from 5,000 wells between 1988-2001 (first decadal sampling event) by the National Water-Quality Assessment Project. Samples are collected in groups of 20-30 wells with similar characteristics called networks. About 1,500 of these wells in 67 networks were sampled again approximately 10 years later between 2002-2012 (second sampling event) to evaluate decadal changes in groundwater quality. Between 2012 and 2020 (third sampling event), a subset of these networks was sampled again, allowing additional results to be displayed on the web page: Decadal changes in groundwater quality (https://nawqatrends.wim.usgs.gov/decadal/)....

Ensemble-tree machine learning (ML) regression models can be prone to systematic bias: small values are overestimated and large values are underestimated. Additional bias can be introduced if the dependent variable is a transform of the original data. Six methods were evaluated for their ability to correct systematic and introduced bias: (1) empirical distribution matching (EDM); (2) regression of observed on estimated values (ROE); (3) linear transfer function (LTF); (4) linear equation based on Z-score transform (ZZ); (5) second machine learning model used to estimate residuals (ML2-RES); and (6) Duan smearing estimate applied after ROE is implemented (ROE-Duan). The performance of the methods was evaluated using...

The hydrologic regime of rivers and streams is a major determinant of habitat quality for fish and aquatic invertebrates. Long-term streamflow data were compiled and multidecadal streamflow trends and ecological flow (EFlow) statistics were calculated in support of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Chesapeake Bay Science Initiative toward understanding fish habitat and health in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBWS). A dataset comprising all streamgages (n = 409) reporting daily means of streamflow within the CBWS and remaining active as of September 30, 2018 (the end of Water Year [WY] 2018), independent of streamgage installation date, was retrieved from the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS)....
This dataset contains U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) developed hydraulic models, USGS developed hydrology data, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) supplied data (topography/bathymetry and structure data for pre removal conditions), and USGS field surveyed data at nine dam-removal and culvert-retrofit sites in the northeastern United States (Olson and Simeone, 2021). The hydrology, the USFWS supplied and USGS field data are used to support the development of one-dimensional and two-dimensional U.S. Army Corps of Engineer (USACE) Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) models for both the pre- and post-dam removal and culvert-retrofit conditions. The referenced models were used to evaluate...
