This project initiated the first large-scale Tribal government discussions on the relationship of scientific research and traditional knowledge in the activities of the NPLCC. The project: 1. Reviewed existing approaches and protocols related to scientific research and traditional knowledge in the Pacific Northwest, characterized different types of traditional knowledge and the contexts in which these are encountered; 2. Initiated discussions among the 21 member Tribes of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (all other Tribes are welcome to join); 3. Reported on their views; 4. Proposed a framework for the use of TK based on discussions and presented it for a possible consensus by all participants; and 5. Conducted...

The State of Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the United Statescombined and extends from the high Arctic to the temperate rainforests and marine waters of Southeast Alaska. Climate change impacts are unique in the Southeast Alaska region and are longer term impacts such as heavy rains causing flooding, ocean acidification, warmer waters, snowfall variations, warm springs followed by frost affecting wild berry production, invasive species, and toxins in the marine environment. These factors impact food security and culturally important resources. This project will provide a summit for Southeast Alaska tribal environmentalcoordinators and other stakeholders tosupport natural and cultural resource conservation...

The Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center (ACRC) held a symposium titled “Coastal Temperate Rainforests: Integrating Science, Resource Management, and Communities” on April 17‐19, 2012, in Juneau, Alaska. The three day event included an all‐day field trip to Berner’s Bay (north of Juneau), an international plenary, three concurrent sessions, two lunch‐time keynote speakers, an evening open public reception, an evening science social, and an evening banquet. The list of speakers may be found in the attached program, or at http://acrc.alaska.edu. To highlight a few of the keynotes speakers, Dr. Peter Kareiva (The Nature Conservancy) spoke at the opening public reception and the banquet, Dr. Kirk Johnson (Denver Museum of...

This report provides a first-ever compilation of what is known—and not known—about climate change effects on marine and coastal ecosystems in the geographic extent of the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC). The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service funded this report to help inform members of the newly established NPLCC as they assess priorities and begin operations. Production of this report was guided by University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group and information was drawn from more than 250 documents and more than 100 interviews. Information in this report focuses on the NPLCC region, which extends from Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska to Bodega Bay in northern California west of the Cascade...

This report provides a compilation of what is known – and not known – about climate change effects on terrestrial ecosystems in the geographic extent of the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC). Where a broader regional context is needed, we also present information from surrounding areas. The NPLCC funded this report to help inform members of the NPLCC as they assess priorities and continue operations.

The intent of this project was to create a directory of academic climate change scientists that focus on the North Pacific Coast of North America—including California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alaska. The University of Washington developed the California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho portion of the directory and Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center developed the British Columbia and Alaska portion of the directory. Funding was provided by the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC) and the Northwest Climate Science Center (NWCSC). The intended audience for this directory ranges from individual parties involved in climate change adaptation, to Landscape Conservation Cooperative...
The Province of British Columbia, Ministry of Forests, Lands, & Natural Resource Operations, in partnership with Simon Fraser University and the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center, led a third workshop to develop cross-boundary geospatial and climate data sets in support of regional conservation applications across NPLCC international boundaries. The workshop will provide opportunities for communicating and discussing priorities for the exchange, development and unification of geospatial and climate datasets.

This annotated bibliography is a supplement to the Guidelines for Considering Traditional Knowledges in Climate Change Initiatives and is intended to demonstrate the ways that existing is already considering TKs in law, policy and natural resource management. Additionally, this bibliography provides access to research which addresses ongoing issues surrounding the protection and use of TKs, including appropriation of Indigenous cultural and intellectual property, legal and policy hurdles that TK users and holders face in collaborating in an equitable manner with researchers, government agencies and others, and the development of research protocols to ensure just collaboration between TK holders and researchers....

The North Pacific LCC helped sponsor the Second Annual Pacific Northwest Climate Science Conference. This two day, regional conference included a panel discussion on federal climate science endeavors in the Pacific NW.
The Services goal with this project is to bridge the gap between guidance documents and field staff who develop Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs). Results from this project are expected to serve as a model for national-level guidance and practice for incorporating climate change information into HCPs.FY2014Cofunded with the Great Basin LCC PR 0040166614

Practitioners struggle with how to identify, prioritize, and implement climate adaptation actions that can effectively reduce vulnerability; these decisions may be more easily made and successfully implemented if they are informed by scientific evidence. EcoAdapt, the Institute for Natural Resources, and the Northwest Climate Science Center have partnered on the Available Science Assessment Project (ASAP) to synthesize and evaluate scientific knowledge on specific adaptation actions to determine the implementation conditions under which these actions may be most effective; we are examining the science behind sea level rise adaptation actions in the Northwest. We will convene managers and scientists at in-person...
