Grass Carp Ctenopharyngodon idella was imported to the United States in the 1960s for research into its usefulness as a biocontrol agent for nuisance aquatic vegetation. Escapees and intentionally stocked individuals founded wild, spawning populations in the Mississippi River and tributaries to the Laurentian Great Lakes. USGS-led research on the Sandusky River, a tributary to Lake Erie, demonstrated spawning of Grass Carp in 2015. In 2018, sampling with ichthyoplankton nets in the Sandusky River 11-13 June produced thousands of suspected fertilized Grass Carp eggs. Genetic analysis of 49 eggs identified by microscopic analysis as Grass Carp eggs confirmed all were from Grass Carp, demonstrating 100% accuracy of...

Riparian and wetland systems were determined from NHD waterbodies, SWReGAP riparian landcover types, and LANDFIRE riparian existing vegetation types. Potential for change (PFC) was determined by calculating the maximum potential for change among all change agents within each 1 km reporting unit. Current and future landscape intactness (LCM_C_FZ and LCM_N_FZ) are based on measures of landscape development and invasive species. Current vegetation departure (VDEP) is based on LANDFIRE vegetation departure and characterizes the departure of current vegetation from historic reference vegetation conditions. Current and future human development (DEV_C_FZ and DEV_N_FZ) represent human development intensity values modeled...

These data contain the global positioning system (gps) coordinates and elevation data of traps used to test different ambrosia beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) lures and repellents in two different experiments conducted at Waiākea Forest Reserve and ʻŌlaʻa Forest of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
These data contain the documentation of culturing results of Ceratocystis lukuohia and Ceratocystis huliohia from ambrosia beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) bodies. Beetles were collected from bolts (tree stem sections), sticky cards affixed to ʻōhiʻa trees in the field, and cross-vein panel traps deployed in the field. Beetles were cultured to detect the presence of fungi, confirmed morphologically, then further confirmed for DNA by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR).
This is a dataset containing the first and second record of georeferenced observations of introduced and invasive vascular plant species in the contiguous United States (CONUS). Non-native plant species were identified using the United States Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (US-RIIS) list. After identifying a list of plants non-native to CONUS, we obtained presence data from aggregated occurrence databases, ensuring the occurrences we acquired were georeferenced (i.e., had coordinate information) and had an observation year recorded. We also identified and removed records that might indicate cultivation. From these data, the first and second record were removed and isolated. This data set contains the...

The Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) is sponsoring the Sage Steppe Partner Forum to help facilitate collaboration among conservation practitioners and partnerships that share landscape conservation challenges in an eco-geographic context. Draft Partner Forum guidance suggests that field-level managers, scientists, and conservation constituents will, through a loosely structured process, identify priority conservation information and scientific needs that fall within the scope of the Great Northern LCC Strategic Conservation Framework. The sagebrush-steppe biome covers some 480,000 square miles in 14 western states and provinces expanding the SSPF challenge to areas outside the GNLCC geography....

Amphibians and reptiles (herpetofauna) have been linked to specific microhabitat characteristics, microclimates, and water resources in riparian forests. Our objective was to relate variation in herpetofauna abundance to changes in habitat caused by a beetle used for Tamarix biocontrol (Diorhabda carinulata; Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and riparian restoration. During 2013 and 2014, we measured vegetation and monitored herpetofauna via trapping and visual encounter surveys (VES) at locations affected by biocontrol along the Virgin River in the Mojave Desert of the southwestern United States. Twenty-one sites were divided into four riparian stand types based on density and percent cover of dominant trees (Tamarix,...

Wyoming Big Sagebrush communities with degraded or absent herbaceous vegetation occupy vast expanses of the western United States and contribute to sage-grouse population decline. Annual grasses are invading these sagebrush systems and replacing perennial grasses and forbs. Unfortunately, little is understood about restoring degraded sagebrush community understories. Past studies have suggested that burning and herbicide treatment may be an effective approach to increasing perennial grasses, but herbicide alone produced moderate success (Davies 2011). However, using burning as a treatment in core sage-grouse habitat is unlikely. Information on effectively establishing a diverse and healthy forb population is especially...

Hydrodynamic and sediment transport time-series data, including water depth, velocity, turbidity, conductivity, and temperature, were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center at three locations in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected in Lindsey Slough in April 2017, and Middle River and the Mokelumne River in March 2018. Data files are grouped by location. At each of the three sites, data were collected at stations outside and within patches of vegetation, to determine how submerged invasive vegetation influences tidal currents and suspended-sediment concentration. The Table below shows the data types collected at each station, and classifies stations...

Invasive species have had devastating effects on Pacific Island biodiversity, ecosystem services, food, infrastructure, culture, and public health. Meanwhile, climate change is expected to worsen droughts and wildfires, increase storm severity, and raise the temperature, acidity, and sea level, all of which exacerbate invasive species issues and complicate management. Invasive species managers in the area are concerned about the impacts of climate change but are not satisfied with the knowledge currently available to help address these threats. They critically need easily accessible information, tools, and products that can help improve invasive species management in the face of climate change. The Pacific Regional...

Data are cross-listed on https://rangelands.app/cheatgrass/ Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and other invasive annual grasses represent one of the single largest threats to the health and resilience of western rangelands. To address this challenge, the Western Governors Association (WGA)-appointed Western Invasive Species Council convened a cheatgrass working group to develop a new regional vision for invasive annual grass management across the West. Foundational to implementing this new vision is the creation of a common spatial map to guide strategic actions. The WGA cheatgrass working group sought to develop a 30-m base map of annual herbaceous cover to support a common spatial strategy for tackling invasive annual...
Model Archive and Results for Unsteady Simulations of Egg and Larval Drift in the Maumee River, Ohio
This page contains results from 304 Fluvial Egg Drift Simulator (FluEgg; version 4.1.1) simulations of invasive carp eggs and larvae in the Maumee River, Ohio, under unsteady flow conditions. FluEgg models the drift and dispersion of eggs and larvae in fluvial environments. The eggs develop, changing in size and density, and eventually hatch into larvae. The simulations end when the larvae reach the gas bladder inflation stage or when the set duration of the simulation is exceeded (whichever comes first). FluEgg requires the user to provide hydraulic data to drive the drift model. The hydraulic inputs for these FluEgg simulations were generated using a one-dimensional unsteady hydraulic model of the Maumee River...
The U.S. Geological Survey simulated the drift and dispersal of invasive carp eggs and larvae in the Maumee River, Ohio, using the Fluvial Egg Drift Simulator (FluEgg) (Garcia and others, 2013; Domanski, 2020). The hydraulic inputs used in the FluEgg simulations were generated using a one-dimensional Hydrologic Engineering Center-River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) 5.0.7 model of the Maumee River (HEC-RAS, 2020). HEC-RAS simulations and FluEgg simulations were run for both steady and unsteady flow conditions. This data release contains an archive of the relevant files to document and run the HEC-RAS and FluEgg simulations of the Maumee River as well as the simulation outputs.
