This study focused on sensitivity of high-elevation ecosystems in Hawai‘i to climate change. These Hawaiian ecosystems are becoming warmer and drier, and are relevant because they house many rare species, represent the last remaining stretches of uninvaded landscapes, and include wao akua – the small-statured cloud forests of great cultural significance that are the ‘realm of the gods’. Rapid climate change here presents a disproportionately high climate change impact risk. We provided models that relate current, past, and future distribution of plant species from 6000 – 7500’ feet in elevation on Haleakalā, to mean climate, extreme drought events, and soil properties. We constructed 24 models of current vegetation...

In conservation, one challenge of climate change adaptation is that acting on projected long-term climatic threats requires two ‘leaps’ by managers: 1) Acting on climate-based information which rarely is considered by managers; and 2) Acting on projected impacts that have not yet materialized. A broader challenge to Hawaiian plant conservation is the disconnect between the public and the wao akua where efforts to preserve native plants are often concentrated in. We have recently developed autonomous and high precision sensor arrays to monitor growth of individual native plants along with local environmental conditions at 30 minute intervals. The developed sensor array is unobtrusive, autonomous and when coupled...

Conservation efforts in isolated archipelagos such as Hawai’i often focus on habitat-based conservation and restoration efforts that benefit multiple species. Unfortunately, identifying locations where such efforts are safer from climatic shifts is still challenging. We aimed to provide a method to approximate these potential habitat shifts for similar data- and research-limited contexts. We modeled the relationship between climate and the potential distribution of native biomes across the Hawaiian archipelago to provide a first approximation of potential native biome shifts under end-of-century projected climate. Our correlative model circumvents the lack of data necessary for the parameterization of mechanistic...

The Golden-winged Warbler Focal Area represents an area of interest pertaining to the Golden-winged Warbler under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP). Working Lands for Wildlife is a partnership between NRCS and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to use agency technical expertise and financial assistance from the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program to combat the decline of seven specific wildlife species whose decline can be reversed and will benefit other species with similar habitat needs. The WLFW project will target species whose decline can be reversed and will benefit other...
Dozens of species of landbirds, such as warblers, hummingbirds, and orioles, migrate through the Northeastern United States from their summer breeding grounds in the U.S. and Canada to their nonbreeding grounds as far south as South America. During the migration period, birds must find habitat where they can stop, rest and replenish their energy reserves. Conservation efforts are increasingly focused on identifying stopover sites that are important for sustaining migratory landbird populations. This project builds upon prior work by the University of Delaware and USGS to use weather surveillance data and field surveys to map and predict important migratory bird stopover sites. This project was co-funded by through...

The Highstead Foundation worked with partners to deliver, disseminate, and communicate North Atlantic LCC science products to help advance the knowledge base, strategic conservation planning, and on-the-ground conservation success of regional conservation partnerships (RCPs). There are 39 RCPs in New England (and eastern New York) covering more than 60 percent of the landscape, working across town and even state boundaries to achieve conservation that is both locally grounded and regionally significant. Each RCP is composed of multiple land trusts, community leaders, agencies, and conservation groups. Highstead, in partnership with the GIS office of Harvard Forest, Harvard University, provided technical assistance...

This project built off a first phase of work funded by Northeast states through the Regional Conservation Needs program by assessing the vulnerability to climate change of 7-10 additional northeastern habitat types, including forests, wetlands, and aquatic systems. Tidally-influenced habitat vulnerability was also assessed and included development of a database of ongoing coastal climate change projects and tools. The project will also build capacity in the Northeastern states for Regional Vulnerability Assessments and will coordinate with NOAA in the development of an on-line catalog of coastal climate change assessments.

Northern Arizona University will study how forest treatment practices and climate change may impact water balance across the Kaibab Plateau and critical habitats in lower elevations of the Grand Canyon. The project will include use of a forest landscape simulation model to examine how fuel treatments and prescribed burning will affect the resilience of forest ecosystems. The project will also address whether those activities would benefit the conservation of downstream riparian habitat by mitigating anticipated changes in the stream flow and water quality. The model will assist managers in developing, adaptation strategies for the conservation of riparian habitats by testing a range of realistic fuel treatment and...

The mission of the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GCPO LCC) is to define, design and deliver landscapes capable of sustaining natural and cultural resources at desired levels now and into the future. The GCPO describes both a unique geographic region as well as a new kind of conservation partnership. We are part of a national network of Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs). LCCs are partnerships among federal agencies, regional organizations, states, tribes, NGOs, universities and others, all of whom leverage resources to define a common vision for sustaining natural resources within a region. The GCPO LCC conducts research, develops tools that improve natural resource...

The Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative draws on its Steering Committee and Science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (S-TEK) partners to prioritize and support conservation science across the Great Basin region. Over five years, GBLCC has distributed $3.3 million in direct funds and leveraged an additional $5.2 million in matching and in-kind contributions to 41 projects including sagebrush modelling under climate scenarios, tribal adaptations to climate change, mapping of wetlands across the region and many more. Conservation Science in the Great Basin is part one in a four part series highlighting Great Basin LCC research and provides users an opportunity to learn about and interact with high-priority...

This data is for planning purposes only. LCCs are applied conservation science partnerships with two main functions. The first is to promote collaboration among their members in defining shared conservation goals. With these goals in mind, partners can identify where and how they will take action, within their own authorities and organizational priorities, to best contribute to the larger conservation effort. The second function of LCCs is to provide the science and technical expertise needed to address the shared priorities and support conservation planning at landscape scales – beyond the scope and authority of any one organization. The organizational model of the LCC Network was intentionally structured to operate...

The Georgia Basin supports a globally unique mix of dry forest and savannah habitats that evolved under historic climates and First Nations land management. These extraordinary areas still provide ecosystem services essential to human health and well-being and are widely recognized for their outstanding beauty, recreational and economic values. However, most of this habitat has been converted to human use and what remains will be lost without further investment in conservation and restoration activities. We use leading-edge methods to prioritize stewardship actions, identify conservation networks likely to facilitate species persistence under climate change, and maximize return on conservation investments.

The study seeks to provide a retrospective analysis of the relationships among bird abundance and distribution and changes in land cover and climate in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. The resultant models will be used to provide spatially explicit forecasts of future avian responses. Using data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and a hierarchical modeling framework that accounts for imperfect detection during surveys, species distribution and abundance is estimated. Historic aerial photos are being digitized and classified to measure landscape covariates. Once species-specific relationships between distribution parameters (i.e., occupancy, colonization, extinction) and landscape covariates...
