Estimates of nutrient loading to the Gulf of Mexico indicate that nine states within the Mississippi River Basin are responsible for approximately 75% of all nitrogen and phosphorus delivered to the Gulf. The Mississippi Basin supports a rich assemblage of fish species; at least 25% of all species in the conterminous United States are found in the Basin. These assemblages reflect their habitats, human landscape disturbances, and fragmentation of the river network by dams. Climate also has close associations with aquatic habitat conditions and ultimately fish community composition. Climate change is anticipated to lead to additional changes in stream habitats, including changing thermal properties and flow regimes....

The Midwestern Region is dominated by intensive agricultural production, primarily corn and soybeans. Economic pressures result in optimizing acreage planted and may place pressure on producers to resign not enroll in conservation programs. At issue is the balance between ecosystem services provided by acres in conservation programs and those in agricultural production. Intensive agricultural production (e.g., high levels of fertilizers) in this region are major contributors to Gulf hypoxia (i.e., reduced levels of ecosystem services) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Researchers in the Human Dimensions Research Program at the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), through a grant provided by the Illinois Department...
This data layer depicts North Dakota Game and Fish Department Wildlife Action Plan focus areas. Focus Areas typically exhibit unique or easily identifiable differences in vegetation, soils, topography, hydrology or land use. Focus Areas are highly variable in size and often represent an area of native vegetation or a natural community type rare to North Dakota. Most of the 100 Species of Conservation Priority can be linked to Focus Areas. The purpose of the data is to provide a comprehensive list and spatial location of North Dakota wildlife action plan focus areas. This dataset is primarily used as a framework data layer for use in GIS and other mapping applications and does not represent a land survey of the focus...

Pilot Basins are HU-4 basins where there is an alignment of ecological and production systems of interest with areas thought to be producing significant agricultural nutrient loads and possessing significant implementation interests. These provisional basins represent areas of greatest opportunity in terms of need and potential for conservation delivery. Two tiers of pilot basins were identified for version 1.02 of the Conservation Blueprint. Tier 1 pilot basins have the highest nutrient load potential and the highest amount of watershed implementation interest, while Tier 2 pilot basins have either lower load potential or lower watershed implementation interest than Tier 1 pilot basins. Implementation opportunities...

This shapefile was created by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry. It identifies priority forest landscapes for Ohio's 2010 Statewide Forest Resource Assessment and Strategy (FRAS 2010). Priority forest landscapes are large forest blocks that have a high concentration of priority forest areas as identified in FRAS 2010. The priority forest landscapes may be used for strategic planning, competitive grants, stakeholder collaboration, and conservation marketing. This shapefile identifies priority forest landscapes developed for Ohio's 2010 Statewide Forest Resource Assessment and Strategy. The priority forest landscapes represent areas with high concentrations of priority forest areas that...

For management agencies, there is a growing need to understand (1) how climate change affects and will continue to affect wildlife populations of conservation concern, and (2) how the negative Upper Midwest Great Lakes Landscape Conservation Cooperative Request for Funding 2013 demographic effects of climate change can be mitigated through management strategies. Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment (CCVA) integrates available data and scientific understanding in a transparent process, details assumptions and uncertainties, and ultimately projects population-level responses of target species to future climate change. Climate change is already influencing distributions and abundances of species throughout North...

Innovative Conservation incentives beyond easements and fee simple purchase are needed for conservation in Florida. In east central Florida, citrus farm owners and agencies have developed a method of storing additional water on shallow citrus groves called water farming. This water storage will help remove harmful point source discharges to the Indian River Lagoon. In support of the development and implementation of wildlife regulatory assurance for Dispersed Water Management (DWM) projects in the Northern Everglades, especially for Water Farmers in the St. Lucie River and Estuary Watershed, the PI provided coordination to support development of a multi-party agreement among USFWS, FWC, FDACS, SFWMD, SJRWMD, and...

Migration barriers and resulting habitat fragmentation are a major conservationconcern for freshwater fishes. Characterizing the swimming abilities of fish is vital forfishway design and identifying potential movement barriers. The objective of this studywas to assess the swimming performance of two of the most widely distributed prairiefishes, the large-bodied, large river sauger Sander Canadensis, and the small-bodied,small stream longnose dace Rhinichthys cataractae. Swimming performance for bothspecies was assessed using a variety of metrics (passage success, maximum ascentdistance, maximum sprint speed) in an open channel flume over a range of velocities(sauger, 51, 80, 93 cm/; dace, 39, 64, 78, and 90 cm/s),...

Wetland hydroperiod, the length of time water is available in wetlands, is sensitive to changes in precipitation, temperature and timing due to climate variation. Truncated hydroperiod has major implications for wetland-dependent species (e.g., waterfowl, amphibians) and human water allocation (PPP LCC Need 1). To characterize wetland hydroperiod in the Plains and Prairie Pothole Region, we first identify location and hydroperiod of wetlands using field-based and remotely sensed training data (RapidEye, Landsat). We define hydroperiod as wetland ephemerality, where ephemerality represents the persistence of a wetland across the growing season. We then link hydroperiod to climatic variation by relating climate time-series...

Unconventional oil development in the Bakken shale region has increased rapidly as a result of new technologies. This region also supports a particularly high density and diversity of grassland bird species, which are declining across North America. We examined grassland bird response to unconventional oil extraction sites (i.e. developed with hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling) and associated roads in North Dakota. Our goal was to quantify the amount of habitat that was indirectly degraded by oil development, as evidenced by patterns of avoidance by birds. Grassland birds avoided areas within 149 m of roads (95% CI: 4 – 294 m), 267 m of single-bore well pads (95% CI: 157 – 377 m), and 150 m of multi-bore...

This project entails creation and refinement of the conservation targets for the terrestrial Priority Resources for the Peninsular Florida Landscape Conservation Cooperative. Potential Conservation Targets were developed through stakeholder Workshops held throughout the State of Florida in 2016/2017. Lists of potential CTs were generated through brainstorming and general discussion and stakeholders ranked the final list for suitability for using as a measure of Priority Resource health. The resulting list of potential CTs for the Freshwater Non-Forested Wetlands Priority Resource were explored and the results were presented to the Freshwater Non-Forested Wetlands team. The potential CTs were ranked according to...

The purpose of Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) is to inform the management of natural and cultural heritage resources in response to shifts in climate, habitat fragmentation and loss, and other landscape level challenges. The South Atlantic LCC’s mission is to “create a shared blueprint for landscape conservation actions that sustain natural and cultural resources” (South Atlantic LCC 2014) and to this end, has contracted with the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) to release the first version of the Conservation Blueprint using the Data Basin (databasin.org) platform. The South Atlantic LCC seeks to iteratively refine the Conservation Blueprint and release future versions as necessary to achieve their...
