The Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GPLCC) is a partnership that provides applied science and decision support tools to assist natural resource managers in their efforts to conserve plant, fish and wildlife in the mid- and short-grass prairie of the southern Great Plains. It is part of a national network of public-private partnerships—known as Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs)—that work collaboratively across jurisdictions and political boundaries to leverage resources and share science capacity. The Great Plains LCC identifies science priorities for the region and helps foster science that addresses these priorities, thus supporting wildlife conservation efforts throughout the Great Plains....

Oyster reefs are one of the most important environmental and economic resources within the coastal regions of the United States. Although oyster reefs in deeper water have been mapped, the extent and condition of intertidal reefs has not been sufficiently inventoried in most states. Understanding the geographic extent and condition of intertidal oyster reef and shell bottoms is important for assessing parental stock and to determine potential recruitment bottlenecks for oysters within an estuary. These intertidal areas have traditionally served as a sanctuary from commercial harvest pressure due to closures, safety, and operational barriers preventing the harvesting of oysters in shallow water. The location...

This dataset represents the soils with high kaolinite (low activity clay) content in the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative.
This dataset represents the soil water storage capacity (AWS in mm at 1.5 m depth) from SSURGO and STATSGO soil descriptions for soil map units in the state of southern Alaska that lie within the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative. Available Water Storage 0-150 cm - Weighted Average (centimeters). Available water storage (AWS). The volume of water that the soil, to a depth of 150 centimeters, can store that is available to plants. It is reported as the weighted average of all components in the map unit, and is expressed as centimeters of water. AWS is calculated from AWC (available water capacity) which is commonly estimated as the difference between the water contents at 1/10 or 1/3 bar (field capacity)...

Areas identified in the Minnesota Pheasant Action Plan to target habitat enhancement and protection in complexes at least 9 square miles in size where a goal of 40 percent permanent protection can be met within the timeframe of the plan. The complexes identify the best places for pheasant production and focused protection efforts on those areas to create permanent habitat complexes. Ranking of the complexes was based on current conditions. For instance, if a complex is at 38% permanent protection, it scores very high since with only a little effort 40% protection can be achieved, conversely. A place that was 20% scored low. The complexes identify the best places for pheasant production and focused protection efforts...

This dataset is made up of features aggregated from Ecoregional Assessments as well as other planning methodologies used across The Nature Conservancy to identify areas of biodiversity significance and prioritize conservation action. More information about ecoregional assesments and other conservation planning methodologies is available at The Nature Conservancy's Conservation Gateway, the Ecoregional Assessment Status Tool (EAST), and at http://maps.tnc.org. This dataset provides a vision for conservation success for ecological systems, natural communities and species representative of an ecoregion by showing the boundaries of areas that The Nature Conservancy has prioritized for conservation within the Mississippi...

Projects folder to contain all North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative projects for LCC Network Science Catalog.
Conservation priorities have been identified for each river basin at the cataloging unit or stream reach scale and were categorized using two tiers to indicate relative importance when considering the limited resources available for conservation initiatives. The recommendations were developed by Commission biologists through review of their field data as well as data from several agencies and research organizations. The review considered a combination of factors such as the presence of federal- or state-listed species; distribution of priority species; high species diversity; unique habitats, or high-quality habitats in the subbasin; and the importance of the watershed to downstream populations. Priority areas identified...

Mississippi River Basin Gridded SSURGO mapunits where "pwsl1pomu" (wetland potential) is at least 60 or at least 50 and "drclassdcd" (Drainage Class - Dominant Condition) is poorly or very poorly drained. These mapunits represent those with the highest wetland potential based on these criteria.

This report is published as one of a series of technical inputs to the National Climate Assessment (NCA) 2013 report. The NCA is being conducted under the auspices of the Global Change Research Act of 1990, which requires a report to the President and Congress every four years on the status of climate change science and impacts. The NCA informs the nation about already observed changes, the current status of the climate, and anticipated trends for the future. The NCA report process integrates scientific information from multiple sources and sectors to highlight key findings and significant gaps in our knowledge. Findings from the NCA provide input to federal science priorities and are used by U.S. citizens, communities,...

Coral reefs are seriously threatened by ocean acidification and climate change impacts like coral bleaching. Importantly though, the degree of threat varies for different coral reef areas due to differences in local and regional climate drivers. Climate models are based on the scientific community’s understanding of climate drivers and were used during this project to look forward or ‘project’ conditions in coral reef areas. The projections are global maps that depict changes in acidification and the frequency and severity of the temperature stress events that cause coral bleaching. The project team found that the date by which really severe bleaching is projected to occur annually varies with latitude. Beyond this...

Pelagic seabirds (albatrosses and petrels) find food by relying on distinct oceanographic features like transition zones, upwelling, and large eddies. These oceanographic features change intensity, distribution, and duration during El Niño/La Niña events resulting in poor breeding performance in seabirds. Climate models predict that these perturbations will last longer, be more variable, and in some cases, cause major shifts in oceanographic regimes. We analyzed our decade-‐long dataset of tracked Laysan and black-‐footed albatrosses (N = 192 individual trips) the breed in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands to investigate the mechanistic role that oceanography plays in affecting the foraging distributions and its...

These datasets represent model results from Rabotyagov et. al. 2014. Cost-effective targeting of conservation investments to reduce the northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 111 (52): 18530-18535. The authors developed an integrated assessment model linking the water quality effects of cropland conservation investment decisions on the more than 550 agricultural subwatersheds that deliver nutrients into the Gulf of Mexico with a hypoxic zone model. The model was used to identify the most cost-effective subwatersheds to target for cropland conservation investments. The 60% reduction [60PCT] model could cost-effectively reduce the area of the hypoxic zone to 5,000 km2,...
