High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. Seismic data collected during this survey can help to define the rates of deposition within the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, which are the main inflows to Lake Powell. These new data are intended to improve water budget management decisions that affect the natural and recreational resources of the reservoir. Multibeam echosounder bathymetry and...

These data were compiled to create models that estimate entrainment rates and population growth rates of smallmouth bass below Glen Canyon Dam. Objective(s) of our study were to predict smallmouth bass entrainment rates and population growth under different future scenarios of Lake Powell elevations and management. These data represent parameters needed for associated models and data needed to produce figures. These data were collected from publicly available online sources including published papers and federal government datasets. These data were assembled by researchers from U.S. Geological Survey, Utah State University, Colorado State University, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These data can be used to run...

Lake Powell retains most of the phosphorus that it receives, leading to downstream phosphorus limitation. These data were compiled to examine controls on phosphorus cycling below Lake Powell in the Colorado River and from storm inputs from the Paria River. Objectives of our study were to determine how several forms of phosphorus, both organic and inorganic, were cycled under varying dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH, reflecting the range of values observed in the river over the years. These data represent nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, and carbon concentrations, water quality parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature), sediment composition, total protein, and extracellular enzyme activity (alkaline phosphatase)....

These data were compiled for/to modeling efforts for U.S. Bureau of Reclamation National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analyses for the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, Arizona. Objective(s) of our study were to create revised monthly Lake Powell elevations and outflows from Bureau of Reclamation Colorado River Mid-term Modeling System (CRMMS) traces that incorporate the alternatives in the sEIS documents and indicate when potential actions may occur and how that changes water movement and storage. These data represent monthly hydrologies for Lake Powell: inflow, outflow, and elevation forecasts for 2024-2027, as well as volumes of water in outflows for different water mangement strategies in NEPA supplemental...

These data were compiled to investigate the control of drying on the aeolian transport of river-sourced sand. Objectives of our study were to to examine aeolian sediment transport during a five-day period of low steady river flow on a river sandbar and adjacent aeolian dunefield. These data represent the observed and theoretical threshold fiction velocities for aeolian sediment transport, as well as the grain size, sediment moisture content, surface roughness and other characteristics of the sandbar and sand dune surfaces. These data were collected at a sandbar and aeolian sand dune along the Colorado River approximately 19 km downstream from Glen Canyon Dam at Lees Ferry, Arizona, USA from March 15 to 20, 2021....

These data were compiled as part of a long-term (1964 - 2022) water quality monitoring program at Lake Powell. Objectives of our study were to release a consistent record of long-term water quality data. The 58-year limnology dataset captures some water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, major ions, total suspended solids) from reservoir filling to present day. It also contains a 38-year record of secchi depth, and a ~30-year record of nutrients, phytoplankton, and zooplankton assemblages. The data were collected from various sites within the Lake Powell reservoir and the Glen Canyon dam. Regular monthly sampling occurred at three sites near the dam and reservoir-wide sampling was generally conducted quarterly,...

Yes, all data values are reasonable and within the valid range for measurement. The data release consists of 15 tabular data files (csv). These data were compiled to compare patterns and potential drivers of leaf litter decomposition in the Colorado River downstream of Glen Canyon Dam between 1998 and 2022. Objective(s) of our study were to compare the breakdown of cottonwood (Populus fremontii), willow (Salix exigua), and salt cedar (Tamarix chinensis) leaves to a previous decomposition experiment from 1998 (Pomeroy et al. 2000) that was conducted in the context of much cooler water temperatures, higher phosphorus concentrations, lower New Zealand mudsnail densities, and salt cedar litter that was unaffected by...

These data were compiled to assess the physical attributes of the Colorado River and its tributaries in Grand Canyon, including discharge, water temperature, Annual Thermal Units, and the potential future thermal regime of the river due to climate change. The objective of our study was to assess whether this river reach could support various life stages of Colorado pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus lucius). These data represent discharge and water temperature in the river segment between Glen Canyon Dam and the Lake Mead inflow, as well as data from Lake Powell that drive water temperatures in Grand Canyon. These data were collected in the Colorado River in Grand Canyon from 1/1/1950 to 9/8/2021. These data were collected...

These data are remote sensing image-based classification maps of unvegetated river-derived sand along the Colorado River. One map is based on imagery acquired in May 2013 and is a classification of sand located above the wetted river channel in the imagery which was acquired at the approximate contemporary low-flow river discharge of 8,000 cubic feet per second (227 cubic meters per second) and extends from Glen Canyon Dam at Lake Powell to Separation Canyon at Lake Mead, a total distance of approximately 255 river miles (410 river kilometer). Three other maps are based on imagery acquired in May 2002, 2009, and 2013, respectively, and are classifications of sand located above the wetted river channel (at river...

This section of the data release includes core and core section information in the format of a comma-separated value (CSV) file (2018LakePowellCoring_CoreSectionInfo.csv). It is Part 2 (of four) in this data release and provides detailed core information. Complete recovery of a core resulted in approximately 3 m of sediment, which was sectioned into lengths not exceeding 1.5 m shipboard. Thus, all cores with >50% recovery contain multiple sections. This CSV includes drillhole, core, and core section identifiers, section lengths, section tops and bottoms, scaled section tops and bottoms, filenames for corresponding core images, and drilling comments. Drillhole information, such as location and total recovery, are...

This model archive summary documents the sediment acoustic index model for suspended-sediment concentration developed to compute 15-minute suspended sediment concentration for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) station, San Juan River near Bluff, UT (USGS ID: 09379500) from May 2, 2018, onward. This is the first model developed for the site to compute continuous suspended sediment concentration. The methods used follow USGS guidance as referenced in relevant Technical Memoranda and USGS Techniques and Methods, book 3, chap. C5 (TM3-C5, Landers and others, 2016).
