This dataset is a compilation of boundary location polygons for 167 hydraulic mine pits located in northern California. This dataset was compiled from three sources, Topographically Occurring Mine Symbols (TOMS) database produced by the California Department of Conservation (2001), Yeend (1974), and on-screen digitizing, using current (2015) satellite imagery, of additional hydraulic mine pits not contained in either of these sources. Mining Districts of Montana, developed by the Montana Abandoned Mines Reclamation Bureau. Based on a map of minining districts made in 1935, with some districts revised or removed, with addtional districts added. The districts were revised again in May of 1995. Mining districts were formed by associations of miners in a region who developed rules and laws to govern mining in the district. They sometimes established a monument to serve as the reference point for surveys in the district and created a description of the district boundary. Mining districts are no longer legal entities. Historical narratives describing the mining districts and their boundaries are available at http://deq.mt.gov/abandonedmines/linkdocs/default.mcpx.

This is a point coverage containing 12 years (1984 through 1995) of coal mining history in the Colorado Plateau coal assessment study area. This layer was derived from the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Information Resource Center data for the years 1984 through 1995.

Mine locations from the U.S. Bureau of Mines Mineral Information Location System (MILS) database. Provided to NRIS by Frances Baker of the Spokane office (509-353-2738 or 509-353-2712). This data was provided to BOM from many State and Federal agencies, and the coordinates come from sources of varying accuracy. The attributes included here are a subset of those available from USBOM. Data from BOM's "one-liner" report on 9/1/1992.

Background and Problem The Retsof salt mine in the Genesee River valley, Livingston County, New York flooded after roof collapses in 1994 created two rubble chimneys in overlying bedrock that intersected a confined aquifer in the basal glacial-drift deposits (figs. 1 and 2). Groundwater flowed downward through the rubble chimneys causing widespread drawdown in the lower confined aquifer until the mine was completely flooded in 1996 (Yager and others, 2001). By 2005, water levels in the lower confined aquifer had nearly recovered to pre-collapse conditions but the hydraulic connection through the rubble chimneys between the brine-filled mine cavity, saline-water bedrock fracture zones, and the lower confined aquifer...
