Investigations of coastal change and coastal resources often require continuous elevation profiles from the seafloor to coastal terrestrial landscapes. Differences in elevation data collection in the terrestrial and marine environments result in separate elevation products that may not share a vertical datum. This data release contains the assimilation of multiple elevation products into a continuous digital elevation model at a resolution of 3-arcseconds (approximately 90 meters) from the terrestrial landscape to the seafloor for the contiguous U.S., focused on the coastal interface. All datasets were converted to a consistent horizontal datum, the North American Datum of 1983, but the native vertical datum for...

Near-surface site characteristics are critical for accurately modeling ground motion, which in turn influences seismic hazard analysis and design of critical infrastructure. Currently, there are many strong motion accelerometers within the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) that are missing this information. We use a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based framework to intersect the site coordinates of approximately 5,500 ANSS accelerometers located throughout the United States and its territories with geology and velocity information. We consider: (1) surficial geology from digitized geologic maps (Horton, 2017; Wilson et al., 2015; Sherrod et al., 2007; Bawiec, 1999; Saucedo, 2005; Bedrossian et al., 2012;...

This data set represents the extent, approximate location and type of wetlands and deepwater habitats in the United States and its Territories. These data delineate the areal extent of wetlands and surface waters as defined by Cowardin et al. (1979). Certain wetland habitats are excluded from the National mapping program because of the limitations of aerial imagery as the primary data source used to detect wetlands. These habitats include seagrasses or submerged aquatic vegetation that are found in the intertidal and subtidal zones of estuaries and near shore coastal waters. Some deepwater reef communities (coral or tuberficid worm reefs) have also been excluded from the inventory. These habitats, because of their...

Basin boundaries were delineated for 1,320 USGS streamgages located on tributaries and streams flowing to the Gulf of Mexico. Basins ranged in size from less than 1 to approximately 67,500 square miles. Physical and climatic basin characteristics were calculated using these boundaries. Data presented here will be used as independent variables to estimate streamflow characteristics and provide a numerical foundation supporting the: (1) development of statistical models of streamflow characteristics; (2) evaluation of spatial and temporal trends in streamflow characteristics; and (3) development of network optimization analysis.

This dataset represents results from this study attributed to the NHDPlus V2 catchments. Changes in climate occurring throughout the Mississippi River Basin are expected to lead to additional impacts in stream habitats and fish assemblages in multiple ways, including changing changing thermal properties and flow regimes. To manage streams for current impacts and future changes, managers need region-wide information for decision-making and developing proactive management strategies. Our project provides a suite of climate metrics that have been found to be relevant to the distribution and population structure of aquatic organisms in freshwater stream networks. These results provide natural resource managers, decision-makers,...

This dataset, termed "GAGES II", an acronym for Geospatial Attributes of Gages for Evaluating Streamflow, version II, provides geospatial data and classifications for 9,322 stream gages maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). It is an update to the original GAGES, which was published as a Data Paper on the journal Ecology's website (Falcone and others, 2010b) in 2010. The GAGES II dataset consists of gages which have had either 20+ complete years (not necessarily continuous) of discharge record since 1950, or are currently active, as of water year 2009, and whose watersheds lie within the United States, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Reference gages were identified based on indicators that they...

This data release contains compiled historical groundwater-withdrawal data for the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida from 1925 to 2018. Most groundwater-withdrawals were distributed to groundwater wells and separated into water-use categories of industrial, production wells, power generation, mining, domestic, irrigation, livestock or commercial. Groundwater-withdrawal data were obtained, where available, from existing database resources hosted by various State and Federal agencies. For Texas, data were obtained from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) from both existing Groundwater Availability Models (GAM), and from historical groundwater-withdrawal data....

These data depict the National Hydrography Dataset Plus Version 2.1 (NHDPlusV2.1) flowline representation of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System throughout the conterminous United States as of 2018. U.S. Forest Service geospatial data on National Wild and Scenic River segments (USFS WSR Segment) from 3/1/2016 were joined to the NHDPlusV2.1 to create the Wild and Scenic Rivers 2018 Linked to the NHDPlusV2.1 (wsr_nhdpv2.1) data. To ensure these data correctly represented the NHDPlusV2.1 flowline delineation of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, each wsr_nhdpv2.1 river segment was examined against the USFS WSR Segment data to check for duplication and/or omission of Wild and Scenic River segments. Spatial...

The Sparta aquifer is a primary source of groundwater in north-central Louisiana with more than 60 million gallons of water per day being withdrawn in 2015, and public supply and Industry account for over 90 percent of the water-use demand from the Sparta aquifer (Collier, 2018). Concentrated withdrawals from the Sparta aquifer have caused regional water-level declines within the Sparta aquifer (McGee and Brantly, 2015). Widespread concern about the potential effects of declining water levels has brought forth many questions regarding the sustainability of the aquifer as well as continued saltwater intrusion. In cooperation with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the U.S. Geological Survey...

The success of Gulf Coast restoration efforts hinge on partners sharing a common vision for conservation framed by explicit biological objectives for specific conservation targets. However, specific and explicit biological objectives that quantify what it means to actually share a common vision remain undefined. Therefore, this project’s goal is to develop explicit biological objectives for a common suite of conservation targets representative of sustainable Gulf habitats across the four Gulf Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs)(i.e., Gulf Coast Prairie, Gulf Coastal Plains & Ozarks, Peninsular Florida, and South Atlantic) and, for a subset of those species, to use Bayesian Network models to link these biological...

Using previously published (Robinson and others, 2019) no-flow fractions and L-moments of nonzero streamflow from decadal streamflow flow-duration analysis (daily mean streamflow), probability distributions were fit to provide 27 estimated quantiles of decadal flow-duration curves, and hence the probability distributions are a form of parametric modeling that ensures monotonicity of the quantiles by non-exceedance probability (NEP). For both U.S. Geological Survey streamflow-gaging stations (streamgages) and level-12 hydrologic unit code (HUC12) catchments, as defined by Crowley-Ornelas and others (2019), the 27 quantiles were estimated and tabulated in this data release. Three probability distributions were used...

This dataset provides numerical and categorical descriptions of 48 basin characteristics for 956 basins with observed streamflow information and 9,314 ungaged basins coinciding with 12-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC12) pour points that drain to the Gulf of Mexico. Characteristics are indexed by National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) version 2 COMID (integer that uniquely identifies each feature in the NHD) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) station number for streamflow-gaging station, where applicable. The variables represent mutable and immutable basin characteristics and are organized by characteristic type: physical (5), hydrologic (6), categorical (12), climate (6), landscape alteration (7), and land cover (12)....

Human alteration of waterways has impacted the minimum and maximum streamflow in more than 86% of monitored streams nationally and may be the primary cause for ecological impairment in river and stream ecosystems. Restoration of freshwater inflows can positively affect shellfish, fisheries, habitat, and water quality in streams, rivers, and estuaries. Increasingly, state and local decision makers and Federal agencies are turning their attention to the restoration of flows as part of a holistic approach to restoring water quality and habitat and protecting and replenishing living coastal and marine resources and the livelihoods that depend on them. In 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Lower Mississippi-Gulf...
