Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during October 2014 in a 553-square-kilometer area that includes the East Poplar oil field on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in northeastern Montana, USA. Data surround the city of Poplar and extend south into the Missouri River floodplain. Data were acquired with the SkyTEM301 transient electromagnetic helicopter-borne system together with a Geometrics G-822 magnetometer. The AEM average depth of investigation is about 80 m. Data were collected in June 2016 as part of a dye-trace experiment in the Missouri River downstream from Fort Peck Dam, Montana, USA. Fluorometers were deployed at 8 measurement stations over a 135-km study reach. Approximately 51 L of Rhodamine WT (RWT) dye was injected on 26 June 2016 at 14:30 MDT. The injection occured along a transect located approximately 3000 meters downstream from the confluence of the Milk and Missouri Rivers. Injection was performed via a gravity-feed system and was complete within seven minutes of initaition. These two datasets contain metrics from hydrodynamic and particle tracking simulations for two sub-reaches of the Upper Missouri River near Wolf Point, MT. The upstream reach is referred to as the “upper” reach while the downstream reach is referred to as the “lower” reach. Simulations were performed for 16 flows in the range of 185-635 cms at increments of 30 cms.

Cottonwood forests are in decline becasue of losses from land use conversion and reduced regeneration from river regulation. Projecting lon-term implications of current trends and policies, or alterations of these, will help to identify the importance and scale of restoration activities needed to offset losses. In FY12, hydrogeomorphic methodology was applied along 670 miles of the Missouri River from Decatur, Nebraska to St. Louis, Missouri. In FY15, additional resources extended the HGM up river to Gavin’s Point Dam, West Yankton, South Dakota (approximate river mile 811), the location of the most downstream mainstem dam; thus encompassing the entire free flowing reach of the Missouri River and increasing the study area by approximately 800,000 acres. This data set contains two sets of measured water-level data collected on and near Offutt Air Force Base near Bellevue, Nebraska. Surface-water and groundwater-level data were collected for two synoptic water-level surveys completed in late summer of 2020 and in spring 2021. This child data release includes RGB (red-green-blue) videos acquired from an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) during a tracer experiment performed on the Missouri River near Columbia, Missouri, on May 5, 2021. One of the primary goals of this tracer experiment was to assess the feasibility of inferring concentrations of a visible dye (Rhodamine WT) from various types of remotely sensed data in a large, highly turbid natural river channel. This dataset contains breakthrough curves calculated from particle tracking simulations of a July 1, 2019, larval drift experiment conducted on the Upper Missouri River near Wolf Point, MT. Breakthrough curves were generated using a custom script written in the Python programming language that counts the number of particles per time step passing through sampling locations. Breakthrough curves were generated for particles using passive, active75pct, and active60pct vertical movement methods at the first two sampling stations downstream of the release location.

Two tabular data sets representing values to examine survival estimates for piping plover nests and chicks in the Northern Great Plains from 2014-2016. We focused on four study areas: U.S. Alkali Wetlands, Lake Sakakawea, Garrison Reach of the Missouri River, and Lake Oahe spanning eastern Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. We followed nests to completion, either success or failure, and created capture histories for uniquely banded chicks.

Sandbars of large sand-bedded rivers of the Central U.S. serve important ecological functions to many species, including the endangered Interior Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) (ILT). ILT are colonial birds which feed on fish and nest primarily on riverine sandbars during their annual breeding season of approximately May through July, depending on region. During this time, ILT require bare sand of sufficient elevation so as not to be inundated during the period between nest initiation and fledging of hatchlings. These data sets were derived from surveys at the Missouri River and Papillion Creek Water Resource Recovery Facility outfalls on the Missouri River. Each site had three transects, one at the outfall, one 45.7 meters upstream of the outfall and one 45.7 meters downstream of the outfall. Velocity and depth data were collected using an acoustic Doppler current profiler at each transect. This dataset contains cross-sectionally averaged flow metrics from measurements made with acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) on the Missouri River near Wolf Point, MT during 2018 and 2019.
