The ascii grids represent regional probabilities that groundwater in a particular location will have dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations less than selected threshold values representing anoxic groundwater conditions or will have dissolved manganese (Mn) concentrations greater than selected threshold values representing secondary drinking water-quality contaminant levels (SMCL) and health-based screening levels (HBSL) for water quality. The probability models were constrained by the alluvial boundary of the Central Valley to a depth of approximately 300 meters (m). We utilized prediction modeling methods, specifically boosted regression trees (BRT) with a Bernoulli error distribution within a statistical learning...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains the code, data, executables, and other information necessary to run the application Unit Flows in Networks of Channels (UFINCH). The UFINCH application is a computer code that utilizes the geospatial stream connectivity and catchment geometry described in National Hydrography Dataset Plus value added attributes (NHDPlus Version 2) to simulate unit (15-minute) flows in networks of channels, generally by use of daily flows at the most downstream stream segment in a basin at which a USGS streamgage is located. Preliminary testing indicates that UFINCH may be most applicable for simulating unregulated, non-estuarial, flows in basins as large as 3,000 square miles...

This USGS data release contains 2013 streamflow, baseflow, and precipitation data from three hydrologically-diverse streams in the United States used to develop a conceptual framework for effectively anticipating water-quality changes resulting from changes in agricultural activities. The framework combined generalized concepts on the movement of water, the environmental behavior of chemicals and eroded soil, and the designed functions of various agricultural activities. The framework addresses the impacts on water quality of a broad range of agricultural chemicals and sediment across a variety of hydrologic settings. • Chesterville Branch near Crumpton, Maryland, (USGS site ID - 01493112) had substantial baseflow...
Replicate water-quality samples are collected and prepared in the field and analyzed in the laboratory in identical ways so that they are considered to be the same in composition and analysis (Mueller and others, 2015). This data set includes one table of duplicate National Water-Quality Assessment Project (NAWQA) surface water and groundwater samples collected between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2015 and analyzed by the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) using direct aqueous-injection liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (Schedule 2437; Sandstrom and others, 2015) for the determination of 225 pesticides at 288 sites. Mueller, D.K., Schertz, T.L., Martin, J.D., and Sandstrom, M.W., 2015,...

This product consists of two sets of imperviousness calculations for 3,535 urban areas and urban clusters in the conterminous United States. Imperviousness is given as the percent of the area covered by impervious surfaces, such as roads, buildings, or parking lots. One set of calculations is for the time periods 2001, 2006, and 2011, based on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) imperviousness data layer. The second set of calculations is for the time periods 1974, 1982, 1992, 2002, and 2012, based on landuse-based coefficients from the USGS NAWQA Wall-to-wall Anthropogenic Landuse Trends (NWALT) product. Urban area boundaries are based on the U.S. Census Bureau 2015 Urban Areas...

This metadata record describes monthly estimates of natural stream flows for greater than 2.5 million stream reaches, defined by the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Version 2.0, in the conterminous United States for the period 1950-2015. A statistical machine learning technique - random forest modeling - was applied to estimate natural flows using 200 potential predictor variables. The dataset is organized by level 3 ecoregions, with each ecoregion having its own directory. Separate .csv files for each stream reach in the NHD network belonging to a given ecoregion are contained within the respective ecoregion directories. The stream reach .csv files are named as the NHD COMID corresponding to that stream reach....

Note: Revisions to the dataset were necessary because the original dataset was incomplete. Data for select compounds were missing from the original (version 1) pesticide use estimates. This data release has been superseded by version 2.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9F2SRYH. This data release provides estimates of annual agricultural use of pesticide compounds in counties of the conterminous United States, for years 2013-17, compiled by means of methods described in Thelin and Stone (2013) and Baker and Stone (2015). For all States except California, U.S. Department of Agriculture county-level data for harvested-crop acreage were used in conjunction with proprietary Crop Reporting District-level pesticide-use...

Reported atrazine, carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, and fipronil concentrations for selected U.S. Geological Survey pesticide sampling sites were downloaded from the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (NWIS) and modified for input into the SEAWAVE-QEX model. Modifications included identification of appropriate censoring limits to use for samples in which the pesticides were not detected, rounding reported concentrations to a consistent level of precision, and adjusting reported concentrations to correct for temporal trends in laboratory recovery rates.

This data set contains county-level estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizer, for both farm and nonfarm uses, for the conterminous United States, for 1987 through 2012. State-level farm and nonfarm nitrogen and phosphorus were derived from the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO) commercial fertilizer sales data. State estimates were then allocated to the county-level using fertilizer expenditure from the Census of Agriculture as county weights for farm fertilizer, and effective population density as county weights for nonfarm fertilizer. Data computations for 2007 - 2012 estimates are results of methods applied directly from Gronberg and Spahr, 2012. Data for 1987 - 2006 are...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) previously identified 62 Principal Aquifers (PAs) in the U.S., with 57 located in the conterminous states. The USGS characterized areas outside of PAs as “other rocks;” other rocks account for about 40% of the area of the conterminous states. This paper subdivides the large area identified as other rocks into Secondary Hydrogeologic Regions (SHRs). SHRs are defined as areas of other rock within which the rocks are of comparable geologic age, lithology, and relationship to the presence or absence of underling PAs or overlying glacial deposits. A total of 69 SHRs were identified. SHRs were identified in two phases. In the first phase, Other Rock Regions (ORRs) were defined as regions...

In this dataset we present two maps that estimate the location and population served by domestic wells in the contiguous United States. The first methodology, called the “Block Group Method” or BGM, builds upon the original block-group data from the 1990 census (the last time the U.S. Census queried the population regarding their source of water) by incorporating higher resolution census block data. The second methodology, called the “Road-Enhanced Method” or REM, refines the locations by using a buffer expansion and shrinkage technique along roadways to define areas where domestic wells exist. The fundamental assumption with this method is that houses (and therefore domestic wells) are located near a named road....
