Wildfire and fuel treatment locations for the USFWS Pacific Southwest Region (California, Nevada, Klamath Basin OR) extracted from the Fire Management Information System (FMIS) on October 23, 2015, for fiscal years 1980-2015.
In response to the Nisqually earthquake of 2001, DGER was awarded a grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Washington Emergency Management Division to develop two types of earthquake hazard maps for every county in the state—liquefaction susceptibility maps, which outline areas where water-saturated sandy soil loses strength during earthquake shaking, and NEHRP (National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program) site class maps, which outline areas where soils amplify ground shaking. Maintaining the native prairie lands of the Northern Great Plains (NGP), which provide an important habitat for declining grassland species, requires anticipating the effects of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and climate change on the region’s vegetation. Specifically, climate change threatens NGP grasslands by increasing the potential encroachment of native woody species into areas where they were previously only present in minor numbers. This project used a dynamic vegetation model to simulate vegetation type (grassland, shrubland, woodland, and forest) for the NGP for a range of projected future climates and relevant management scenarios. This project helped the Shivwits Band of the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah (PITU) identify and assess the potential impacts of landscape-level stressors on tribal and ancestral lands and resources. Stressors included climate change and drought, and resources of interest were water and culturally significant species and the habitats and ecosystems that support them. With funding from the Southern Rockies Landscape Conservation Cooperative, the Shivwits Band conducted an assessment of priorities and conservation and research opportunities on and off reservation. Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources. They are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. Habitat Conservation Plans (HCP) are planning documents required as part of an application for an incidental take permit under section 10(a)(1)(B) of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973. They describe the anticipated effects of the proposed taking, how those impacts will be minimized, or mitigated; and how the HCP is to be funded. HCPs can apply to both federally listed and non-listed species, including those that are candidates or have been proposed for listing. Conserving species before they are in danger of extinction or are likely to become so can also provide early benefits and prevent the need for listing.

A complete set of wells associated with oil, natural gas, and coal bed natural gas development in the western states as of June 2004. This is a static dataset even though liquid energy development is a highly dynamic endeavor. Because these well location datasets are generally housed and managed by various state-based agencies (typically the state Oil and Gas Conservation Commissions) a uniform, spatially precise coverage for the western United States has not been available to date. This layer consolidates the best available well location data from ND, SD, MT, WY, CO, NM, UT, AZ, OR, and CA (ID and WA do not report any liquid energy development) and standardizes the attributites. The current fire return interval is calculated by dividing the number of years in the fire record by the number of fires occurring during that time period, then adding a value of one (CurrentFRI = Number of years/Number of fires+1). This dataset is current to 2012. Although fires prior to 1908 are recorded in the fire perimeter database, they are not included in this analysis due to lack of consistency in reporting (1908 is the year that the US Forest Service began to formally record information on size and location of major fires).CurrentFRI is derived by overlaying the fire perimeters on the PFR polygons and summing the number of fires affecting each polygon after 1908.

Once part of the former Soviet Union, this region was and continues to be an important producer of base and precious metals, rare metals (RM), including niobium, tantalum, and beryllium, and a past producer of rare earth elements (REE). This coverage provides an estimate of the highest annual average wind resource potential in the Greater Sage-grouse Conservation Assessment (CA) area. Wind power was measured at 50 meters above ground level. The vector data used to create this file was originally derived from a raster dataset (200m resolution) by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The original data provides seven "Wind Power Classes" to distinguish wind power density (W/m2). Only the highest wind power classes that fell within the CA boundary are represented in this dataset.
A summary data set of all fire polygons we could locate as of December 2007 . We used multiple datasets to developed this layer including data gathered from the internet, publically available databases, and personal contacts with dozens of agency personnel throught the western U.S. Data were assessed for utility (but not accuracy) and formatted for consistency. Each source data set was then attributed consistently with fields for record number and year (of fire). Because various resource management entities map fires somewhat independently (especially in more recent years) we merged overlapping polygons for each year.. Users are encouraged to understand the contents of this data file before using it.
