This dataset is a component of a complete package of products from the Connect the Connecticut project. Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset represents the weighted index of ecological integrity (IEI), which is a measure of relative intactness (i.e., freedom from human modifications and disturbance) and resiliency to environmental change (e.g., as caused by disturbance and climate change). Raw IEI is a composite index derived...

It has been chosen to represent the habitat needs of other species of wildlife that also use thickets and young forests in the boreal and mixed forests from northern New England to high elevation areas as far south as Virginia. This dataset depicts...
The American Black Duck (Anas rubripes) is a large dabbling duck that breeds in a variety of wetland types in northeastern North America and winters in wetlands along the Atlantic coast. For the non-breeding season, it has been chosen to represent the habitat needs of other species of wildlife that also use estuarine and freshwater coastal marsh and open water. (See also the separate breeding habitat models.) This dataset depicts the potential capability of the landscape throughout the Northeastern United States to provide habitat for American Black Duck, during the non-breeding season, based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. The presence of salt water is an important determinant of ecological communities. This dataset modifies the Northeast Terrestrial Habitat Map (linked below), developed by The Nature Conservancy, to denote the presence of salt water or brackish water as follows: -Wetlands and waters classified by the National Wetland Inventory (http://www.fws.gov/wetlands/) as "marine", plus additional ocean waters to a distance from the coast of 10 km, are considered salt water and assigned a value of "1" -Wetlands and waters classified by the National Wetland Inventory as "upper estuarine" are considered oligohaline and assigned a value of "0.5" -Wetlands and waters classified by the National Wetland Inventory as "estuarine" are...

Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset represents the climate response index for Wood Thrush. Climate response is one of several different measures of landscape capability that reflect different decisions (or assumptions) regarding how to incorporate current versus future land use and climate changes. The climate response...

The zipped folder attached to this entry is an archive of the work of the Connect the Connecticut “core team,” which met from 2014 to 2016. The archive includes records of the meetings of the core team including associated presentations and decisions. The core team also worked under two sub-teams, the Aquatics team and the Terrestrial team; records of these teams are also included in the archive. The final spatial products are available elsewhere as separate products of this project as well as at connecttheconnecticut.org. The core team was led by Nancy McGarigal, Andrew Milliken, and Scott Schwenk representing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Other participants included other Service staff; representatives of...

This data product was created as part of the Northwest Atlantic Marine Ecoregional Assessment. The Nature Conservancy developed this science-based ecoregional assessment for the Northwest Atlantic Marine region (Bay of Fundy to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina). This assessment synthesizes information on oceanography, chemistry, geology, biology, and social science to inform decisions about coastal and marine ecosystems. By integrating this information at a regional level, the Conservancy is able to provide both a greater understanding of the interrelated biological diversity of the marine ecoregion, and a clearer picture of the current condition of its natural areas and the challenges to their continued persistence....

We developed a mapped classification of lakes and ponds based on variables that structure lacustrine natural communities and that could be mapped consistently across Northeastern US. The classification was built upon four key attributes: water temperature, trophic state, alkalinity, and depth. Water temperature was mapped into three classes (very cold, cold, and warm-cool) to reflect the requirements and limits of aquatic organisms. Trophic states, representing the productivity of a lake, were mapped into two classes (oligomesotrophic -mesotrophic and eutrophic- hypereutrophic). Alkalinity was grouped into three classes (high, medium, low) to reflect how well the lake system was buffered from acidification. Depth...

The Northeast United States and Atlantic Canada share many of the same types of forests, wetlands, and natural communities, and from a wildlife perspective the region is one contiguous forest. However, resources are classified and mapped differently on the two sides of the border, creating challenges for habitat evaluation, species modeling, and predicting the effects of climate change. To remedy this, ecologists from The Nature Conservancy collaborated with a committee of scientists from various Canadian institutions to produce the first international map of terrestrial habitats for northeast North America. The project used extensive spatial data on geology, soils, landforms, wetlands, elevation and climate. Additionally,...
ABSTRACTWater temperature is a primary driver of stream ecosystems and commonly forms the basis of stream classifications. Robust models of stream temperature are critical as the climate changes, but estimating daily stream temperature poses several important challenges. We developed a statistical model that accounts for many challenges that can make stream temperature estimation difficult. Our model identifies the yearly period when air and water temperature are synchronized, accommodates hysteresis, incorporates time lags, deals with missing data and autocorrelation and can include external drivers. In a small stream network, the model performed well (RMSE D 0:59 °C), identified a clear warming trend (0.63 °C...

Core Habitat for Imperiled Species is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. This product represents a regional network of the most intact of habitats estimated to be most important for sustaining populations of imperiled species, currently based on over 600 Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN).A number of additional datasets that augment or complement Core Habitat for Imperiled Species, including Habitat Condition for Imperiled Species (the more extensive dataset from...

This data product was created for the project titled: “Application of the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) to the Northwest Atlantic” which was partially funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service and a joint collaborative project with The Nature Conservancy (Eastern Division Conservation Science), University of Rhode Island (Graduate School of Oceanography), and Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game (Division of Marine Fisheries). In the Northeast United States region, efforts are underway to better organize and integrate spatial marine data to support ocean planning and management efforts. An important step in this process is translating existing...
