To evaluate the potential effects of climate change on wildlife habitat and ecological integrity in the northeastern United States from 2010 to 2080, a University of Massachusetts Amherst team derived a set of climate projections at a fine spatial resolution for the entire Northeast. The projections are based upon publicly available climate models. This dataset represents the growing season degree days (number of days in which the average temperature is > 10 degrees C) using one of two IPCC greenhouse gas concentration scenarios (RCP4.5). The dataset is intended to represent typical growing season degree days for the years 2010-2080 rather than the actual growing season degree days. MAP UNITS ARE THE SUM OF DEGREES...

The projections are based upon publicly available climate models. This dataset represents the mean of the minimum air temperature (degrees C) for December, January, and February using one of two IPCC greenhouse gas concentration scenarios (RCP8.5). The dataset is intended to represent typical winter temperatures for the years 2010-2080. MAP UNITS ARE TEMP. IN DEGREES C MULTIPLIED BY 100 (which allows for more efficient data storage).Detailed...
This is a 30 meter grid that maps upland and wetland wildlife habitats/ecological systems for the Northeast, including all 13 states from Maine to Virginia, west to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Mapped habitat types are drawn from the Northeastern Terrestrial Habitat Classification System (NETHCS). The NETHCS is based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classification, augmented with additional information from individual state wildlife classifications and other information specific to wildlife managers. A terrestrial ecological system is defined as a mosaic of plant community types that tend to co-occur within landscapes with similar ecological processes, substrates, and/or environmental gradients,...
Publication from the NALCC co-funded project Identifying Important Migratory Landbird Stopover Sites in the Northeast. With many of the world’s migratory bird populations in alarming decline, broad‐scale assessments of responses to migratory hazards may prove crucial to successful conservation efforts. Most birds migrate at night through increasingly light‐polluted skies. Bright light sources can attract airborne migrants and lead to collisions with structures, but might also influence selection of migratory stopover habitat and thereby acquisition of food resources. We demonstrate, using multi‐year weather radar measurements of nocturnal migrants across the northeastern U.S., that autumnal migrant stopover density...

This report describes an initiative undertaken by the Nature Conservancy of Canada–Atlantic Region to strengthen freshwater conservation efforts in the Canadian portion of the Northern Appalachian–Acadian ecoregion. With the assistance of a core team of freshwater experts from both the United States and Canada, a hierarchical classification of rivers and streams was developed and mapped using five biophysical characteristics that affect the distribution of aquatic biodiversity: size, gradient, temperature, alkalinity, and tidal influence. A standardized classification was then developed for all watersheds in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and eastern Quebec, as well as for those watersheds that...

NOTE: The data are available online four times based on four different attributes (the current, plus 2 degrees C, plus 4 degrees C, and plus 6 degrees C probability of occurrence), the dataset is the same and the download includes the layer files for all the attributes, you do NOT need to download the data more than once. This dataset is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. Brook Trout probability of occurrence is intended to provide predictions of occupancy (probability of presence)...
Soil depth (cm) affects communities primarily because shallow soils (usually on steep slopes or ridgetops) limit deep-rooted plants. A "restrictive layer" is a nearly continuous layer that has one or more physical, chemical, or thermal properties that significantly impede the movement of water and air through the soil or that restrict roots or otherwise provide an unfavorable root environment. if no restrictive layer is described in a map unit, it is represented by the ">200' depth class, This attribute is actually recorded as three separate values in the database. A low value and a high value indicate the range of this attribute for the soil component. A "representative" value indicates the expected value of this...

This dataset depicts imperviousness for the Northeastern United States. Imperviousness is the percentage of the ground surface area that is impervious to water infiltration. Development such as roads and buildings increase imperviousness, which can have large effects on both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The dataset is derived from two sources: 1) the 2006 National Land Cover Database (NLCD 2006), percent impervious product, and 2) OpenStreetMaps (www.openstreetmap.org). The NLCD 2006 was developed by the Multi-Resolution Land Cover Consortium (MRLC), which makes available metadata for the NLCD 2006 , NLCD 2001, and other information that describes how the imperviousness product was developed (http://www.mrlc.gov/)....

This product results from one of 5 subprojects of the North Atlantic LCC funded NROC project, “Demonstrations & Science Delivery Networks for Coastal Resilience Information in the Northeast”. Percent likelihood maps were generated through the project “Advancing Existing Assessment of Connecticut Marshes’ Response to SLR”, sponsored by Northeast Regional Ocean Council (NROC) and completed by Warren Pinnacle Consulting. Percent Likelihood rasters were derived from stochastic uncertainty simulations carried out using the Sea-Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) for the years 2010 (initial conditions), 2025, 2040, 2055, 2070, 2085 and 2100. In these simulations, model inputs were represented as probability distributions,...
The goal of this project is to provide a broader ecological understanding of the ways in which the breaches and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) breach-fill projects affect piping plover populations, their red fox predators and their invertebrate prey communities. Virginia Tech (VT) compared the dynamics of bird use and invertebrate densities in an open breach area, two filled breach areas, two restoration areas, overwash areas, and other areas. Ultimately VT results will help refine their understanding of the time frame and manner in which piping plover habitat develops and persists. The work described in this report was funded under the Breach Contingency Plan (BCP; USACE 1996), the Fire Island Inlet to Moriches...
To create a wall-to-wall surface of landscape permeability we used the software CIRCUITSCAPE (McRae and Shah 2009), an innovative program that models species and population movements as if they were electric current flowing through a landscape of variable resistance. Circuit modeling is conceptually aligned with the concept of landscape permeability because it recognizes that movement through a landscape is affected by a variety of impediments, and it quantifies the degree and the directional outcomes of the compounding effects. One output is a “flow” map that shows the behavior of directional flows and highlights concentration areas and pinch-points.The results can highlight locally and regionally significant places...
