Introduction : Swainson’s Thrush is a medium sized (15-18cm) thrush which prefers to breed in dense shrub growth associated with spruce-fir forests. The "russet-backed" race prefers mixed forests and deciduous riparian woodlands of the coastal region from British Columbia, to northern California. These Pacific populations winter in mature tropical and secondary forests of Central America, whereas the "olive-backed" race that breeds in the Boreal and Rockies winters in S. America. Models of Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survival (MAPS) demographic data and high-resolution land cover data showed that Swainson’s Thrush prefers large intact forest patches with low perimeter to area ratios. On a regional...

Models of Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survival (MAPS) demographic data and high-resolution land cover data The top selected model of productivity indices suggested that productivity indices increased with distance from streams, where local coniferous forest cover (2km context) increased from 10 and 25% (mean `17%), within total forest cover of ~20% in a 2km context (N = 84, R2 = 0.26, P<0.0001). MacGillivray's Warbler station lifetime productivity (STAPI) (log transformed) ranged between +0.090 and +0.564 with a mean value of +0.327 and a median value of +0.325. ________________________________________ Model 1 (3 parameters) MacGillivray's Warbler station lifetime productivity (STAPI) (log transformed)...

Calculate percentage of forest cover within 5km of local 1km (990m) resolution cells derived from 30x aggregation of 30m NLCD 2006 dataset using all forest types combined. Each cell reflects percent cover within all cells encpsulated by 5km radius. log (100 x (percent cover+1)) of all forest classes

This dataset was prepared by Phil Nott pnott@birdpop.org using ArcView 9.3 1. Merged NLCD canopy cover images (IMG) for NLCD superzones 1, 2, and 3. 2. Reclass value 127 to NoData 3. Aggregate 30m resolution to 990 meters with 33x aggregation = 990m resolution cells.

The selected landscape model (equivalent by ICOMP) for Lincoln’s Sparrow adult (AHY) captures predicted (in agreement with Finch 1989) that adults were increasingly more commonly captured with elevation, in this case above 750m to a maximum of 2,600m (mean ~1,400m), in more fragmented forested landscapes (95% confidence limits suggested a range of 10-50% forest cover within 5km context). The model (N=34, R2=0.25, P<0.05) also predicts higher numbers away from streams with sparse impervious cover (mean 2%), often representing forest roads. This landscape pattern is typical of intensively managed forests at higher elevations, including Wenatchee National Forest where high numbers of Lincoln’s Sparrows are captured...

Predictive model of the number of Swainson's Thrush adult captures expected during the operation of a standard Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) station (http://www.birdpop.org/maps.htm ). EBird observations (all historical records, May-Jul inclusive) were superimposed upon the predictive model for visual validation of predictions (yellow dots). Warbling Vireo predictive productivity model states that more adult individuals are captured in medium shrub coverage rather than high shrub coverage, and lower elevations. Bozdogan's ICOMP information complexity index selected the following model Warbling Vireo Productivity model Warbling Vireo station lifetime productivity (STAPI) (log transformed)...
