Direct and indirect ecological effects of the widely used insecticide bifenthrin on stream ecosystems are largely unknown. To investigate such effects, a manipulative experiment was conducted in stream mesocosms that were colonized by aquatic insect communities and exposed to bifenthrin-contaminated sediment; implications for natural streams were interpreted through comparison of mesocosm results to a survey of 100 Midwestern streams, USA. In the mesocosm experiment, direct effects of bifenthrin exposure included reduced larval macroinvertebrate abundance, richness, and biomass at concentrations (EC50s ranged 197.6 – 233.5 ng bifenthrin/ g organic carbon) previously thought safe for aquatic life. Indirect effects...
This study describes the toxic effects of different prominent aquatic pollutants?heavy metals (Cd & Pb), pesticides (alphamethrin and deltamethrin) and salt (NaCl)?on the intracellular proline content in the cyanobacterium, Westiellopsis prolifica?Janet strain?NCCU331. Despite a reduction in growth (measured as chlorophyll a content), the intracellular proline content increased in the presence of heavy metals, pesticides and high salt concentration. The intracellular cyanobacterial proline accumulation was more pronounced under salt stress than in the presence of pesticides and heavy metals. We have also compared whether or not anionic components influence heavy metal toxicity. It was found that the chlorides of...

Vegetative filter strips (VFS) are proposed for protection of receiving water bodies and aquatic organisms from pesticides in runoff, but there is debate regarding the efficiency and filter size requirements. This debate is largely due to the belief that no quantitative methodology exists for predicting runoff buffer efficiency when conducting acute and/or chronic environmental exposure assessments. Previous research has proposed a modeling approach that links the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) PRZM/EXAMS with a well-tested process-based model for VFS (VFSMOD). In this research, we apply the modeling framework to determine (1) the most important input factors for quantifying mass reductions of pesticides...

This dataset was produced from analyzing Affinisep SDB-RPS, Affinisep HLB, and Restek Resprep C18 disks that were deployed with the use of Chemcatcher® passive sampling devices. Silicone bands were also deployed and used for exploring economical methods of sampling for pesticides in surface water. Sampling assemblies were deployed in streams throughout the foothills of the Sierra Nevada range and California's northern Central Valley from 2017 to 2019. Samples were extracted in situ then eluted and concentrated at the Organic Chemistry Research Laboratory in Sacramento, CA. Samples from silicone bands were extracted via agitation in appropriate solvents. Samples were analyzed for a suite of 155 pesticides and degradates...
These data consist of three related tables describing test conditions including pesticide concentration, water quality, and post-treatment survival of crayfish associated with laboratory studies conducted to determine 24-hr acute lethal concentrations of two pesticides containing pyrethrin or cypermethrin for two crayfish species, Procambarus clarkii and Faxonius virilis. Tests investigated whether two nominal temperatures (10 and 22 °C) and total suspended solids in water affected pesticide toxicity. Laboratory data will be used to design field treatments for open-water populations of invasive P. clarkii. Water quality monitoring during testing followed standard testing protocols and included temperature, pH, specific...
This dataset consists of drainage basin boundaries for 212 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stream sites sampled in the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program, the National Stream Quality Accounting Network (NASQAN), and the National Monitoring Network (NMN). Of the 212 sites, 206 have either a contributing or total drainage basin boundary, and the remaining 6 have both a total drainage basin boundary and a smaller contributing basin boundary. Collectively, these 218 basin boundaries have been used in a geographic information system (GIS) to generate basin characteristics for the assessment of trends in concentrations of pesticides streams of the United States.
This dataset describes site location information for samples collected within the western National Parks, USA, (Arches National Park (NP), Bryce Canyon NP, Canyonlands NP, Capitol Reef NP, Dinosaur National Monument (NM), Hovenweep NM, Timpanogos Cave NM, and Zion NP) for water chemistry analyses. Water-quality and bed-sediment samples were analyzed for contaminants of emerging concern at the National Water Quality Laboratory, Denver, Colorado, and Region 8 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency laboratory in Golden, Colorado. Atrazine, a herbicide widely used for corn production in the Midwest, has been detected in groundwater of several states, and has been identified as a possible human carcinogen. With the widespread use of pesticides in crop production, and the frequent detection of these chemicals in groundwater, large-scale risk assessments would help water resource managers to identify areas that are more susceptible to contamination and implement practices to ameliorate the problem. This paper presents an integrated, visual and interactive system for predicting potential environmental risks associated with pesticide contamination at spatial scales ranging from fields to landscapes and regions. The interactive system extends the...

This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release provides surface-water and bed sediment quality data at the Bronx River, New York, 2019. The data were collected with support from the Urban Waters Federal Partnership (UWFP) and others. Surface-water samples were collected at six locations along the Bronx River and analyzed for poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Water-quality field parameters such as pH, specific conductance dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and turbidity were measured during each site visit. Each surface-water site was sampled once under storm (wet) conditions and once under non-storm conditions (dry). 'Wet' samples indicate a precipitation event of 0.5 inch...
Neonicotinoids, a widely used class of insecticide, have been found in surface waters globally. They pose a risk to non-target species found in aquatic environments such as aquatic macroinvertebrates. To better understand the effects of the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, clothianidin and their mixtures on aquatic communities we ran a 30 day mesocosm test. Rock trays were colonized with natural benthic communities in the Cache La Poudre River, located in the mountains of Northern Colorado, and relocated to a laboratory experimental stream setting. In total there were 33 experimental streams: 3 controls and 30 treatments consisting of both single compound and binary compound exposures with 5 treatment levels for each...

This data release documents water-quality data collected from April 2010 through December 2016 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the San Antonio Water System from across the San Antonio segment of the Edwards aquifer with particular emphasis on nutrients and pesticides. Additional data regarding inorganic compounds and selected stable isotopes were obtained to provide a geochemical framework for characterizing source inputs and observed chemical changes during periods of hydrologic transition. Water-quality data were collected from surface-water and groundwater sites representing rural and urban land cover types. Data were obtained from unconfined wells in the recharge zone to characterize the rapid...
To evaluate the potential uptake and accumulation of pesticides in amphibians, American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) tadpoles were collected from surface water sites (four ponds and one reservoir) in 2021 near Mead, Nebraska. Sites were located in the landscape surrounding the AltEn ethanol plant, a plant which had previously received pesticide treated (coated) seeds. Tadpoles were collected in November 2021, these tadpoles hatched in June 2021. The tadpole tissues were dried, homogenized, and then extracted using acetonitrile at 100 °C. Samples were analyzed for 166 pesticides and degradates using both gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Overall, 14 pesticides and degradates were detected...
