Information on the nature and distribution of permafrost is critical to assessing the response of Arctic ecosystems to climate change, because thawing permafrost under a warming climate will cause thaw settlement and affect micro-topography, surface water redistribution and groundwater movement, soil carbon balance, trace gas emissions, vegetation changes, and habitat use. While a small-scale regional permafrost map is available, as well as information from numerous site-specific large-scale mapping projects, landscape-level mapping of permafrost characteristics is needed for regional modeling and climate impact assessments. The Alaska Trumpeter Swan Survey was an aerial survey conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Division of Migratory Bird Management, Alaska Region (MBM-AK) and partners to monitor the status of trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) in Alaska. It was first conducted in 1968 and then repeated at five-year intervals from 1975 through 2015. The objectives of the survey were to estimate the abundance, distribution (1968–2005 only), and productivity of trumpeter swans in late summer, when the swans were dispersed on breeding territories and cygnets were large enough to be easily counted from the air. The endemic subspecies of the Pacific sheath-tailed bat (payeyi; Emballonura semicaudata rotensis), and the Mariana swiftlet (chachaguak; Aerodramus bartschi) once inhabited many of the islands that comprise the Mariana archipelago (Lemke 1986, Flannery 1995, Ellison et al. 2003, Cruz et al. 2008). The USFWS (Service) supports the State of Hawai‘i in conserving endangered Hawaiian forest birds, through technical assistance and management support. Two critically endangered forest birds endemic to KauaŹ»i, the ‘Akikiki and the ‘Akeke‘e, are facing imminent extinction (potentially within three years) if immediate action is not taken. The most important threat is introduced mosquito-borne diseases, amplified by climate change due to the movement of disease-carrying mosquitoes into high-elevation refugia as warming progresses. This threat cannot yet be addressed at a landscape level on Kaua‘i. This funding will be used to hire 1 GS 9/11 staff member to work directly with local governments (Soil & Water Conservation Districts) to enroll landowners in priority habitats in existing Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances (CCAAs) and in Candidate Conservation Agreements (CCAs) on their adjacent BLM allotments. Once enrolled, state and other federal funding sources are available to support sagebrush habitat enhancement projects that address invasive species, fire, juniper encroachment and other threats. The additional capacity is expected to result in an additional +100 landowners enrollments.

As part of the March 29, 2018 appropriations bills, Congress directed the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to obtain an independent assessment on the taxonomic status of the red wolf, Canis rufus, and the Mexican gray wolf, Canis lupus baileyi. Currently, the FWS considers the red wolf a valid taxonomic species and the Mexican gray wolf a valid taxonomic subspecies.
