Northern Spotted Owl habitat within Western Oregon. When the simple age class of a tree stand proved not to be sufficient in determining spotted owl habitat, BLM district biologists returned to the field during the 1991 field season and revisited all 60,000 Operations Inventory timber stand units in Western Oregon. They classified each stand as a 1, 2, or 3, depending on the type of owl activity present, and added that to the Micro*Storms Operations Inventory database. In November, 1991, that information was used to create this new theme from the Forest Operations Inventory spatial theme. This theme shows the two zones for Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus). The first zone comprises the area from the coast to a line mirroring the coast thirty-five miles inland. The second zone comprises the area from the eastern edge of the first zone and north of the Medford BLM district boundary to a line mirroring the coast fifty miles inland. The southern sections of this zone have been adjusted from the original zones, for WOPR purposes. These zones show the areas of Marbled Murrelet habitat with most of the population occurring closer to the coast.
