Wetland hydroperiod, the length of time water is available in wetlands, is particularly sensitive to changes in precipitation, temperature and timing due to climate variation. Truncated hydroperiod has major implications for wetland-dependent species (e.g., waterfowl) and human water allocation. Researchers aim to link hydroperiod to current climatic variation and use this relationship to predict wetland hydroperiod across the moisture gradient from sage steppe to grasslands.

Sediment accumulation threatens the viability and hydrologic functioning of many naturally formed depressional wetlands across the interior regions of North America. These wetlands provide many ecosystem services and vital habitats for diverse plant and animal communities. Climate change may further impact sediment accumulation rates in the context of current land use patterns. We estimated sediment accretion in wetlands within a region renowned for its large populations of breeding waterfowl and migrant shorebirds and examined the relative roles of precipitation and land use context in the sedimentation process. We modeled rates of sediment accumulation from 1971 through 2100 using the Revised Universal Soil Loss...

The Mississippi River Basin / Gulf Hypoxia Initiative (MRB/GHI), spearheaded by seven LCCs, is undertaking a strategic and transparent process to create an integrated framework that supports planning, design, configuration, and delivery of wildlife conservation practices within the watershed. This framework consists of multiple quantitative objectives representing three interests (i.e., wildlife, water quality, agriculture), a tiered set of conservation strategies to achieve those objectives within five production agriculture systems (i.e., corn & soybean; grazing lands; floodplain forest; rice; cotton), and a modeling approach to determine where to best implement those actions within four key ecological systems...

Terrestrial-based planning units of 1 kilometer (km) hexagons. There are about 600,000 units populated with conservation targets from around the Appalachian region. One of the targets included is the optimization from the Aquatics-only target scenario. The tables include summaries of information within each catchment including predictor variables.

Regional Climate Centers (RCC) Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI: drought index). Recent 10-year climatology for drought in summer months, 2005-2014.Drought is one of the most consequential aspects of variation in precipitation and temperature patterns in terms of its impacts on natural ecosystems and human systems. The production of food and clean water can be strongly affected, as can forest products production, outdoor recreation, ecosystem processes such as wildland fire, and many other processes affecting ecosystem services. Having a grasp on recent ranges of variability in drought conditions can provide a context for understanding ongoing and future climate change and its impacts on ecosystem services. Although...

The southeast United States’ rivers and streams support the most diverse unionid (freshwater mussel) fauna on earth. These species are a focus of the GCP LCC because their sensitivity to habitat degradation, fish community changes, and changes in water quality and quantity make them akin to the proverbial ‘canary in the coal mine.’ They are essential components of riverine ecosystems, influencing nutrient cycling and macro-invertebrate diversity. Their decline during the past century stems from overharvest, water pollution, habitat fragmentation, and introduction of nonindigenous predators and exotic mollusks; however, habitat degradation has been the most influential.

The northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) has experienced range wide declines over the last several decades, primarily because of reduction to habitat through loss and fragmentation. For studies on population decline and habitat, spatial scale is very important: the effects of habitat structure at local spatial scales may depend on the larger landscape scale, and patterns may be more evident at different scales. As northern bobwhite populations continue to decline, there is a need for studies that address habitat changes and their impact on northern bobwhite population trends and persistence at three spatial scales (regional, county, and home range). Our goal was to assess changes in habitat and land use and their...
This data represent a compilation of seagrass information for areas along the Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Texas coasts from various source agencies. Seagrass areas were mapped from aerial photography taken between 1987 to 1999. The original source data were not all classified in the same manner, but the information from each of these sources was maintained in the final results.

Consistent transboundary geospatial datasets are a key piece of data in landscape health analysis. The CMP has collected, compiled, and synthesize data from a number of sources in the CCE. The initial data mining effort was for the year c2000, and there is an ongoing effort to update the geospatial datasets available for the CCE to understand both spatial and temporal landuse and landcover trends. To see information on the data mining effort for c2000 please see the Data Mining Report found in this folder
Report describing the grizzly bear occupancy modelling effort undertaken by the Crown Managers Partnership in 2012-2013
Seamless DEM for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem with a 50km buffer. This DEM was created using Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 1 Arc-Second Global data. The SRTM DEM had nodata values in several regions, particularly mountain tops. NoData holes were filled with ASTER Global DEM Version 2. Note: While the ASTER Global DEM does not have the NoData problems, the layers derived from the ASTER DEM (ex: slope, aspect) have sensor anomalies and artifacts, especially visible in the prairie regions. Data originally in WGS 1984 Vertical height in meters DEM created 2016-Feb-09

Current as of April 4, 2013:This geodatabase contains all freely available spatial information on surface wellsites related to energy resources in the Crown of the Continent area. Due to the free nature of the data, it is of mixed quality and should not be considered inclusive of all wellsites actually in the region. Some wells may possess a “Cancelled” status and lack a drilled hole but may still represent a clearing made for the once planned activity.Alberta Source: current as of September 2009; Montana Source: 1998-2000 (Ground water wells: 2009); and British Columbia Source: 2007-2008.

This dataset shows the intercepts of roads and streams in the Crown of the Continent and a 50km buffer. This dataset has been produced by merging the “National Road Network (NRN) - AB, Alberta” shapefile obtained from GeoBase , Digital Road Atlas (DRA) of British Colombia from GeoBC and “Roads from the Montana Transportation Framework MSDI” for Montana, US Provided by Montana State Library. This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the landscape scale. The CMP is collaborative group of land managers, scientists, and stakeholder...
