This dataset was last updated 02/2017. This version includes a new tidal restrictions metric that assesses the effect of undersized culverts and bridges on tidal regime. The previous version (3.1) was updated on 05/2016 by incorporating a revised version of the land cover classification, DSLland Version 3.1, developed by UMass, which included the addition of The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast lakes and ponds classification. This dataset depicts the ecological integrity of locations (represented by 30 m grid cells) throughout the northeastern United States based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. Ecological integrity is defined as the ability of an area (e.g., local site or landscape) to...
This dataset depicts the ecological integrity of locations (represented by 30 m grid cells) throughout the northeastern United States based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010 for aquatic systems. The values for this dataset were extracted from the Index of Ecological Integrity, Region-wide, Version 3.2 for all aquatic systems. Updated 09/2017. The metadata for the original dataset is as follows:This dataset was last updated 02/2017. To create a wall-to-wall surface of landscape permeability we used the software CIRCUITSCAPE (McRae and Shah 2009), an innovative program that models species and population movements as if they were electric current flowing through a landscape of variable resistance. Circuit modeling is conceptually aligned with the concept of landscape permeability because it recognizes that movement through a landscape is affected by a variety of impediments, and it quantifies the degree and the directional outcomes of the compounding effects. One output is a “flow” map that shows the behavior of directional flows and highlights concentration areas and pinch-points.The results can highlight locally and regionally significant places...

This dataset was last updated 05/2016. This version was updated using DSLland Version 3.1. The update to DSLland Version 3.1 from Version 3.0 is the addition of a lakes and ponds classification. This dataset depicts the ecological integrity of locations (represented by 30 m grid cells) throughout New York State based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. Ecological integrity is defined as the ability of an area (e.g., local site or landscape) to sustain important ecological functions over the long term. In particular, the functions include the long-term ability to support biodiversity and the ecosystem processes necessary to sustain biodiversity. The Index of Ecological Integrity (IEI) is...

AbstractContext Conservation planning is increasingly using ‘‘coarse filters’’ based on the idea of conserving ‘‘nature’s stage’’. One such approach is based on ecosystems and the concept of ecological integrity, although myriad ways exist to measure ecological integrity. Objectives To describe our ecosystem-based index of ecological integrity (IEI) and its derivative index of ecological impact (ecoImpact), and illustrate their applications for conservation assessment and planning in the northeastern United States. Methods We characterized the biophysical setting of the landscape at the 30 m cell resolution using a parsimonious suite of settings variables. Based on these settings variables and mapped ecosystems, we...

These datasets are part of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project. Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. The data depict the relative resilience or vulnerability of every coastal site to six possible scenarios of sea level rise (1 to 6 feet). Other data from this project are available in the Nature’s Network gallery: https://nalcc.databasin.org/galleries/8f4dfe780c444634a45ee4acc930a055. Resilience Z-score, Condition Z-score, Physical Z-score and Shoreline units of the Northeast U.S. We evaluated the coastal region of nine Northeast and Mid-Atlantic...

The set of terrestrial ecosystem core areas (unstratified) is one of two versions of terrestrial and wetland core areas that are part of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. While the other version of terrestrial cores (Terrestrial Core-Connector Network, Northeast U.S.) is considered by the planning team to be the primary version for users, this version is also made available for reference and use. A number of additional datasets are also available in the Nature’s Network gallery:...
Resilience concerns the ability of a living system to adjust to climate change, moderate potential damages, take advantage of opportunities, or cope with consequences; in short, the capacity to adapt. The Nature Conservancy’s resilience analysis develops an approach to conserve biological diversity while allowing species and communities to rearrange in response to a continually changing climate. - See more at: http://nature.org/TNCResilience Eastern Division scientists analyzed 393 million acres of land for resilience, stretching from Florida to Maine and adjacent areas of Canada (NOTE - The dataset included in the download was clipped to the Northeast (Region 5), for the original data see: https://nalcc.databasin.org/datasets/c57ec56be4524d81af3491747c865d29)....
Across the Northeast, biodiversity thrives in the places generations before us had the foresight to conserve. Yet shifts in climate are changing the ground rules. As land protection professionals, how can we be sure that our work today will still be relevant in 50 to 100 years — and beyond?Conserving Nature in a Changing Climate offers a modular, user-friendly approach to addressing this challenge. It is a practical guide that contains tools and strategies to help land trusts conserve the lands most likely to harbor wildlife, and to protect natural resources under a changing climate.

This report describes an effort of a team of 60 scientists led by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to identify the places where nature’s own natural resilience is the highest. Thanks to the land’s diverse topography, bedrock, and soil, these climate-resilient sites are more likely to sustain native plants, animals, and natural processes into the future, becoming natural strongholds for diversity. To map their locations, The Nature Conservancy-led team used over 70 new and comprehensive datasets to find places that are buffered from the effects of climate change because the site offers a wide range of micro-climates within a highly connected area. In 2015, the results were published in a leading conservation science...

This dataset is a component of a complete package of products from the Connect the Connecticut project. Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. Specifically, in the Northeast, sites are compared with other sites of the same geophysical setting based on geology, elevation zone, and ecoregion. Within each geophysical setting class, sites are compared with respect to two metrics: 1) landscape diversity, which refers to the number of microhabitats...

The Terrestrial Core-connector Network is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. This product consists of two components: core areas and connectors. A number of additional datasets that augment or complement the core-connector network, including Road-bounded Natural Blocks that surround the cores areas and a set of Grassland Bird Core Areas, are also available in the Nature’s Network gallery: https://nalcc.databasin.org/galleries/8f4dfe780c444634a45ee4acc930a055.
