The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Denver Basin Province is located in eastern Colorado, western Nebraska, southern South Dakota, and eastern Wyoming encompassing all or parts of Pueblo, El Paso, Crowley, Lincoln, Kit Carson, Elbert, Teller, Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, Arapahoe, Adams, Washington, Yuma, Morgan, Weld, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer, Logan, Sedwick,...

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the...

The CED has had success in tracking implementation of conservation actions for terrestrial at-risk species, and can develop systems to monitor the implementation of and inform effectiveness of conservation, restoration, and recovery actions for aquatic at-risk species as well. Pursuant to the Regional Priority Goal to Recover listed cutthroat trout and improve or maintain the conservation status of other cutthroat trout and Arctic grayling populations, the CED Team proposes to develop a framework and modules that displays important resource layers/values important for biological planning and conservation design in addition to collecting information about recovery actions that may improve habitat and/or reduce threats...

Pollinator surveys are currently being conducted in North Dakota, but we are lacking data in other areas. Given likely petitions on the horizon, having baseline data for pollinators will be essential for an informed response. Additionally, these data will be important for habitat prioritization. Given the complexity and difficulty for comprehensive identification of all key pollinators and the urgency of threatened petitions, initial projects should likely focus on bees and butterflies. Results of these surveys will also help guide where and how to sample several at risk species in different habitat types across several states. Ultimately this information could inform a national pollinator survey database development.PI:...

This dataset provides site locations as shapefile points. The format is a shapefile for all sites combined (.shp, .shx, .dbf, and .prj files). This dataset is part of a larger data release of metabolism model inputs and outputs for 356 streams and rivers across the United States (https://doi.org/10.5066/F70864KX). The complete release includes: modeled estimates of gross primary productivity, ecosystem respiration, and the gas exchange coefficient; model input data and alternative input data; model fit and diagnostic information; site catchment boundaries and site point locations; and potential predictors of metabolism such as discharge and light availability.

Understanding the current risk of the threat of invasive annual grasses to the sagebrush ecosystem is needed for biological planning and conservation design of appropriate conservation delivery mechanisms that will enhance and maintain priority wildlife species of conservation concern. Current efforts with partners have developed a 250 m near-real time herbaceous annual percent cover map in western portion of the ecosystem for identifying wildfire risk but this effort needs to be expanded to the eastern portion of the biome. In addition, localized detailed information is needed at 30m scale for increased accuracy of identifying the degree and extent of invasions. This information at the landscape scale will facilitate...

The Conservation Efforts Database (CED) is in the process of collecting information related to conservation efforts implemented in the sagebrush biome. This data will predominantly covers the time from 2009-2018. It is our hope to utilize this information and partner with USGS to investigate if/how these efforts are related to greater sage-grouse population trends being developed as part of a larger Population Monitoring Framework that FWS is involved with. Results of this evaluation would help inform which populations/areas may be receiving a larger conservation benefit from action implemented as well as if changes in trends are related to conservation efforts or other environmental factors. This effort is in support...

Candidate Conservation Agreements (CCAs) with Assurances (CCAAs) are valuable conservation tools developed with landowners in conjunction with the FWS to conserve species at risk with the intent of negating an Endangered Species Act listing action. Monitoring is typically the responsibility of the landowner, with varying levels of monitoring of biological parameters (e.g., vegetation characteristics). We propose a pilot project to assess if these conservation tools are actually meeting their intended purpose, provide essential information for any necessary adaptive management and inform future CCAs and CCAAs. Without this information, we will be unable to determine whether FWS conservation efforts are eliciting...

Demographic vital rates differently impact population growth across species, and effective conservation takes advantage of this by targeting management towards the most limiting critical life stages anticipated to respond to management. Current conservation efforts for sagebrush obligate songbirds is inextricably linked to breeding habitats, yet the relative contribution of breeding ecology (e.g. nest success) to overall population declines remains unknown. Combining readily available data with cutting edge analytical tools can fill this missing piece of the conservation portfolio, while also identifying key knowledge gaps. Ultimately this project seeks to empower management with the scientific basis for a demographic...

This data release component contains shapefiles of river basin polygons and monitoring site locations coincident with the outlets of those basins. A table of basin attributes is also supplied. Attributes, observations, and weather forcing data for these basins were used to train and test the stream temperature prediction models of Rahmani et al. (2021b).<\p>

Climate change has been shown to influence lake temperatures globally. To better understand the diversity of lake responses to climate change and give managers tools to manage individual lakes, we modelled daily water temperature profiles for 10,774 lakes in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin for contemporary (1979-2015) and future (2020-2040 and 2080-2100) time periods with climate models based on the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5, the worst-case emission scenario. From simulated temperatures, we derived commonly used, ecologically relevant annual metrics of thermal conditions for each lake. We included all available supporting metadata including satellite and in-situ observations of water clarity, maximum...

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has been petitioned to list the regal fritillary butterfly under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) with decision due in FY 2022. Population and species viability are directly related to genetic diversity, yet direct measures of genetic diversity are rare for any species, let alone a species of conservation concern. Previous research revealed regal fritillary populations show a reduction in genetic diversity from west to east, as potential habitat patches become smaller and more isolated. Genetic information will inform the species status assessment and the 12-month finding for this species.PI: Sara Oyler-McCance, sara_oyler-mccance@usgs.govPI/Funding recipients organization: US Geological...
