Emerging applications of ecosystem resilience and resistance concepts in sagebrush ecosystems allow managers to better predict and mitigate impacts of wildfire and invasive annual grasses. Soil temperature and moisture strongly influence the kind and amount of vegetation, and consequently, are closely tied to sagebrush ecosystem resilience and resistance (Chambers et al. 2014, 2016). Soil taxonomic temperature and moisture regimes can be used as indicators of resilience and resistance at landscape scales to depict environmental gradients in sagebrush ecosystems that range from cold/cool-moist sites to warm-dry sites. We aggregated soil survey spatial and tabular data to facilitate broad-scale analyses of resilience...

A soil-water balance model (SWB) was developed to estimate potential recharge and irrigation water demand from the groundwater flow system in Florida and parts of Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina for the period 1895 through 2010. This SWB model executable code detailed in the report SWB—A Modified Thornthwaite-Mather Soil-Water-Balance Code for Estimating Groundwater Recharge; Chapter 31 of Section A, Groundwater, of Book 6, Modeling Techniques By S.M. Westenbroek, V.A. Kelson,W.R. Dripps,R.J. Hunt, and K.R. Bradbury (https://pubs.usgs.gov/tm/tm6-a31/) The SWB model was not calibrated; however, various water budget components from the model output compared reasonably well with other estimates including irrigation...
These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This dataset consists of four national 1-kilometer (km) resolution rasters of the estimated percent presence of the soil restrictive layer (SRL) in the upper 25, 35, 45, and 55 centimeters of agricultural land. These rasters were developed from selected criteria of soil parameters from the Soil Survey Geographical (SSURGO) database and mapped agricultural land from the National Land Cover Database 2001 (NLCD 2001), version 2.
A soil-water balance model (SWB) was developed to estimate potential recharge to the groundwater system in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties North Carolina 1980 through 2016 to support a regional groundwater flow model being produced for the surficial, Castle Hayne, and Peedee Aquifer System. The SWB model was not calibrated; however, various water budget components from the model output compared reasonably well with other estimates including evapotranspiration rates reported by NASA's MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite platform. This USGS data release contains all the input and output files for the simulations described in this data release.
Values represent percent of surrounding landscape (5K) are dominated by sagebrush cover. Reclassified LANDFIRE 2013 Existing Vegetation Type by selecting the ecological systems containing sagebrush (Codes: 2080, 2125, 2126, 2220, 2064, 2072, 2079, 2124) to create a binary raster dataset with 1 for the sagebrush land cover types and zero for all others. To incorporate sagebrush lost to fire in fires since the Landsat was flown in 2010 that Landfire was derived from, I used fire perimeters from 2011,2012, & 2013 to reclassify pixels designated as having sagebrush as 0 (not having sagebrush), which assumes a homogenous burn (in reality there may be patches of sagebrush left within a burn perimeter). I then ran focalsum...

This digital dataset contains the soil data for the updated Central Valley Hydrologic Model (CVHM2). The soil data is based on California Department of Water Resource’s C2VSim’s fine grid model soil curve number data set (C2VSimFG Version 1.0 - Datasets; CNRA, 2011). These values were originally obtained from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) soil map of the State of California (USDA, 2004), and then an area-weighted average value for each hydrologic soil group within each subregion was calculated to the C2VSim element. Curve number values obtained from SSURGO were converted for use in C2VSimFG. To translate the curve...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This point feature class contains 81,481 points arranged in a 270-meter spaced grid that covers the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range in Clark County, Nevada. Points are attributed with hydroclimate variables and ancillary data compiled to support efforts to characterize ecological zones.
This tabular data set represents the estimated percent presence of the soil restrictive layer on agricultural land compiled for two spatial components of the NHDPlus version 2 data suite (NHDPlusv2) for the conterminous United States; 1) individual reach catchments and 2) reach catchments accumulated upstream through the river network. This dataset can be linked to the NHDPlus version 2 data suite by the unique identifier COMID. The source data is the "Estimates of the Soil Restrictive Layer in the Upper 25, 35, 45, and 55 centimeters of agricultural land in the conterminous United States" produced by the United States Geological Survey (Nakagaki and others, 2012). Units are percent. Reach catchment information...
