This geologic database is a digitized version of the original 1:24,000-scale analog geologic map titled "Geologic map of the Vidal, California, and Parker SW, California-Arizona quadrangles", published by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 1980. The map area straddles the Arizona-California border, and is located approximately 9.0 km (5.6 mi) west-southwest of Parker, CA, immediately south of the unincorporated communities of Vidal and Vidal Junction, CA. Twenty-four piston cores (and associated trigger cores) were collected from the source zone of the Currituck Landslide Complex and upper slope adjacent to Baltimore Canyon by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island Department of Ocean Engineering during an eight-day cruise aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp in September/October of 2012. These cores were analyzed for evidence of seafloor mass transport processes, with an emphasis on constraining the age and shallow stratigraphy of the landslide complex. Variability in sediment properties with depth and the thickness of individual sedimentary layers are critical determinants of seabed acoustic response. The New England Mud Patch (NEMP), located south of Cape Cod, is an unusual feature on the U.S. Continental Shelf in that it is composed of fine-grained sediment layers containing a relatively-homogeneous mix of sand, silt, and clay-sized particles bounded by more typical sandy shelf sediments. This tabular data set represents the STATSGO Soil texture Attributes compiled for two spatial components of the NHDPlus version 2 data suite (NHDPlusv2) for the conterminous United States; 1) individual reach catchments and 2) reach catchments accumulated upstream through the river network. The source data is found in the TEXT table from the "STATSGO soil characteristics for the conterminous United States" produced by the United States Geological Survey (Wolock, 1997). This part of the data release provides an updated georeferenced guide to the main unit of Holocene sand ascribed to a sea flood on Anegada. Much of the data was previously summarized in Figure A4 of https://doi.org/10.1130/GES01356.1 . Plotted here, on the accompanying map, are all 573 localities in the updated compilation —nearly half of which do not provide much if any evidence for marine inundation. The main attribute of each locality is one of four summary categories: Pervasive—Sand covers more than 3/4 of area and typically thicker than 5 cm (132 localities). Patchy—Sand covers less than 3/4 of area and typically thinner than 5 cm (185 localities). Scant—Called “Sand scarce or absent” in https://doi.org/10.1130/GES01356.1...

This part of the release provides an updated list of places on Anegada, none of them more than 0.5 m above sea level, where observed sandy deposits may represent the Lisbon tsunami of 1755 C.E. These places were previously plotted in Figure A3 of https://doi.org/10.1130/GES01356.1, a paper in which the Lisbon tsunami is inferred to have had minor effects on Anegada compared with a sea flood a few centuries earlier. Details about the low, probable Lisbon deposits were previously reported in https://doi.org/10.1007/s11069-010-9622-6 (stratigraphy), https://doi.org/10.1007/s11069-011-9730-y (molluscan paleontology), and https://doi.org/10.1007/s11069-010-9706-3 (foraminifera).

This data release contains zircon U-Pb (n=1467) and Hf (n=332) data for five modern rivers (Connecticut, Susquehanna, Roanoke, Peedee, and Chattahoochee) draining the Appalachian mountain belt. The data show that zircon crystallization ages are characterized by several discrete populations that often correspond with orogenic episodes in the Mesoproterozoic and Paleozoic, with distinct differences between the various rivers sampled. ɛHf values are more consistent geographically, but differ between the Grenville and Paleozoic (Taconic, Acadian, and Alleghenian) orogenies.
