Model archive summary describing the development of an acoustic derived suspended sediment time series computation model. The model archive summary describes the methods and techniques used to develop the model for the Snake River at Weiser, ID – USGS site ID# 13269000. The model can be used to develop a time series of suspended sediment concentration based on acoustic backscatter and tributary flow data to determine the suspended sediment concentration at the site in real-time. The suspended sediment time series will help enable science entities, managers, and others, track the movement of sediment in the Snake River above Brownlee Reservoir.

During autumn 2009 and winter 2010, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), conducted a hydrographic survey using a multibeam echosounder system (MBES). The survey was from river mile (RM) 130 to 142 on the Snake River, and from RM 0 to 2 on the Clearwater River areas of Lower Granite Reservoir. The survey mapped the part of the river that was accessible to the boat and the echosounder equipment, but very shallow areas along the banks that were inaccessible or too shallow to be measured with echosounder equipment were not mapped. The survey was conducted in 1-mile segments, and the data were combined to provide a continuous digital elevation dataset of the...

The Hells Canyon Complex (HCC) is comprised of a series of three consecutive reservoirs (Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon) along a 145 km reach of the Snake River bordered by Idaho to the east and Oregon to the west. Due to concerns regarding mercury (Hg) contamination within the HCC, in cooperation with Idaho Power Company, the U.S. Geological Survey has been leading an investigation into the sources, transport, microbial transformations, chemical speciation and bioaccumulation of Hg in this complex river-reservoir environment. This data release is focused on the sediment component of this larger effort and includes data collected between 2014 and 2018 from shallow surface sediment (≤ top 5 cm) and from sectioned...

A vertical profile of downwelling spectral irradiance at different depths within the water column was measured on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, WY, August 23, 2015, to support research on remote sensing of rivers. Downwelling spectral irradiance data were collected using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in irradiance mode and deployed from a customized measurement crane. The measurements were made in a reach downstream of Jackson Lake referred to as Swallow bend. In addition, the depth at which each downwelling spectral irradiance measurement was made was obtained using an Onset Hobo pressure transducer mounted next to the spectroradiometer foreoptic on the crane....

Scouring of streambed material surrounding bridge structures is a leading cause of bridge failure in the United States. Damages resulting from bridge failure oftentimes lead to financial burdens and loss of life. To date, there has been no comprehensive evaluation of the current (2016) effectiveness of the guidance or overall long-term performance of bridge-scour countermeasures provided in the Federal Highway Administration, Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 23, Bridge Scour and Stream Instability Countermeasures. To that end, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, obtained bathymetric, topographical, and other data at 20 of the surveyed sites across the United States...
This data set contains imagery from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). The NAIP program is administered by USDA FSA and has been established to support two main FSA strategic goals centered on agricultural production. These are, increase stewardship of America's natural resources while enhancing the environment, and to ensure commodities are procured and distributed effectively and efficiently to increase food security. The NAIP program supports these goals by acquiring and providing ortho imagery that has been collected during the agricultural growing season in the U.S. The NAIP ortho imagery is tailored to meet FSA requirements and is a fundamental tool used to support FSA farm and conservation programs....

Aerial photographs of the coastline from Nome to Elim were collected on August 23, 2015. The photographs were processed using Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetric techniques. Global Positioning System (GPS) checkpoints were collected via a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) survey conducted between August 15 and September 14, 2015. For the purposes of open access to elevation and orthoimagery datasets in coastal regions of Alaska, this collection is being released as a Raw Data File with an open end-user license. Orthoimages contain 4-band, 8-bit, unsigned raster data (red/green/blue/no data; file format-GeoTIFF; source-Fairbanks Fodar) with 20 cm GSD. No-data values are found in band 4 or shown as...

This study was designed to examine mercury (Hg) stable isotope values in filtered water and suspended particulate matter from tributaries to the Snake River located in Oregon and Idaho. Water samples were collected from 21 tributary sites representing a range of watershed land use types (e.g., agriculture, forest, etc.) within the Snake River Basin. In 2018, water samples were collected at tributary sites near the confluence of the Snake River and at sites upstream higher in the watershed. In the 2019 and 2020, the tributary water sample collection was focused on downstream sites near the Snake River. In addition, from 2015-2018 Hg stable isotopes were also measured in air, bed sediment, and geologic material from...

Endangered Banbury Springs limpet and threatened Bliss Rapids snail populations in springs along the Snake River in southern Gooding County, south-central Idaho, are declining. To protect these species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) needs to understand what affects the species' habitat such as aquatic vegetation, associated with elevated nitrate concentrations in the springs. In cooperation with the USFWS, the U.S. Geological Survey developed surrogate regression models to estimate nitrate concentration using specific conductance, day of the year, and streamflow as potential explanatory variables. These surrogate models provide a cheaper alternative than measuring nitrate concentrations directly, through...

Relatively little is known about the interaction of land use patterns and population stability of the Northern Leatherside (Lepidomeda copei) which occurs in streams within the northeastern portions of the Bonneville Basin and select drainages of the upper Snake River of Western North America. Central to an understanding of effects of land use is a clear understanding of effects on habitat suitability and distribution. The research proposed includes studying the relationship among land use patterns, habitat structure, and population dynamics of Northern Leatherside. Specifically, we are interested in determining how habitat structure influences year-round occupancy, reproduction, and recruitment. Secondly, we will...
