This data release contains soil and vegetation data collected along a post glacial chronosequence associated with populations of oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) at the Indiana Dunes National Park. The post glacial chronosequence includes sand dunes and moraines, representing a successional gradient from woodland transition, to oak savanna, woodland and forest, to oak hickory forests on the Lake Border Moraine. Soil samples were collected from August 24, 2017 to September 1, 2017; vegetation cover data (percent cover by species) were collected from 1/4-meter squared plots (0.5 by 0.5 m) where the soil samples were taken. DNA extracted from soil and rhizosphere samples were analyzed for bacterial communities...

The data were collected at Morley Nelson, Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (NCA) where known grazing regimes, including the season of grazing, have been in practice for the last 30 years. Surveyed plots were placed to account for intensity of grazing and to avoid confounding disturbances. Data were collected on the morphogroups of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) found within the NCA, and include measurements on soils related to texture, carbon, nitrogen and the abundance of soil aggregating cyanobacteria in the soil. These data support the following publication: Condon, L.A., Rosentreter, R., Veblen, K.E. and Coates, P.S., 2024. Season of grazing interacts with soil texture, selecting for associations...

This dataset represents the locations of experimental plots that were used during the Phragmites Bioherbicide 2023 field experiment. To meet the criteria for selection, a site must have relatively dry soil with no standing water, have two or more large monotypic stands of Phragmites australis, and be easily accessible by vehicle. Experimental plots were created at these sites and one of four treatments were applied to each plot involving either tap water or bioherbicide.
These tabular data are summaries of natural environment related variables within catchments of the Chesapeake Bay watershed using the Xstrm methodology at 1:24,000 scale. Variables being counted as natural environment related include topography, soils/geology, hydrology/geomorphology, and other physical aspects of surface waters (temperature, flow, etc.). Outputs consist of tabular comma-separated values files (CSVs) for the local catchment linked to the National Hydrography Dataset Plus High-Resolution (NHDPlus HR) framework by NHDPlus ID. Local catchments are defined as the single catchment the data is summarized within. The summarized data tables are structured as a single column representing the catchment id...

Ecosystems benefit people in many ways, but these contributions do not appear in traditional national or corporate accounts so are often left out of policy- and decision-making. Ecosystem accounts, as formalized by the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting Experimental Ecosystem Accounts (SEEA EEA), track the extent and condition of ecosystem assets and the flows of ecosystem services they provide to people and the economy. While ecosystem accounts have been compiled in a number of countries, there have been few attempts to develop them for the United States. We explore the potential for ecosystem accounting in the United States by compiling ecosystem condition and ecosystem services supply and use accounts...

Daily visitor use in Rocky Mountain National Park has increased substantially since 2014, raising questions about the impact of human waste on water quality in popular areas without latrines. Human urine contributes nitrogen, and the ecological and biogeochemical effects of nitrogen from atmospheric deposition have long been the topic of study in Loch Vale watershed, Rocky Mountain National Park. Nitrogen from atmospheric deposition has been found previously to lead to lake eutrophication and altered algal species assemblages. Our data were collected to evaluate the impacts of visitors to a popular alpine watershed in Rocky Mountain National Park. There are three separate data files: soil sample locations and concentrations...

The lateral blast, debris avalanche, and lahars of the May 18th, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, Washington, dramatically altered the surrounding landscape. Lava domes were extruded during the subsequent eruptive periods of 1980-1986 and 2004-2008. During 2022, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contracted the acquisitions of airborne lidar surveys of Mount St. Helens crater and two primary drainages–upper North Fork Toutle River and South Fork Toutle River with GeoTerra, Inc. The U.S. Geological Survey generated a terrain dataset from the classified point cloud with supplied breaklines and modified lake hydro-flattening, then exported a single digital elevation model (DEM) of the ground surface (that is, 'bare earth'),...

One goal of the Indian National Gas Hydrate Program's NGHP-02 expedition was to examine the geomechanical response of marine sediment to the extraction of methane from gas hydrate found offshore eastern India in the Bay of Bengal. Methane gas hydrate is a naturally occurring crystalline solid that sequesters methane in individual molecular cages in a lattice of water molecules. Methane gas hydrate is a potential energy resource, but whether extracting methane from gas hydrate in the marine subsurface is technically and economically viable remains an open research topic as of 2018. This data release provides insight about a poorly quantified aspect of this process: the reaction of fine-grained sediment particles...

This Data Release summarizes measurements of hydraulic and physical properties of soils and ash at sites in the area impacted by the 2017 Thomas Fire, USA. Physical properties include dry bulk density, loss on ignition, and saturated soil water content. Hydraulic properties include field-saturated hydraulic conductivity, sorptivity, Green-Ampt wetting front potential, and soil water retention. Parameters used to represent soil water retention using the van Genuchten approach were also estimated. These measurements provide a foundation to reduce uncertainty of parameters in hydrologic models used to predict water-related hazards, water quality, and water quantity. Note that all methods of data acquisition and processing,...

These data were compiled for an assessment of rangeland ecosystem conditions of the Grand Canyon - Parashant National Monument. The approximately one-million-acre Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument (PARA) is located in the northwest corner of Arizona and co-managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and National Park Service (NPS). This report is focused on the ca. 200,000 acres of NPS administered lands—one of the largest NPS units where livestock grazing is a permitted land-use activity. Many ecosystems in PARA are characterized by a low degree of resilience to improper grazing due to low and variable precipitation. PARA is marked by an extremely high degree of environmental heterogeneity, including...
