The data release encapsulates geospatial data in support of the regional scale study, Coal Geology and Assessment of Coal Resources and Reserves in the Little Snake River coal field and Red Desert assessment area, Greater Green River Basin, Wyoming. The assessment area covers about 2,300 square miles of the Eastern portion of the 15,400 square mile Greater Green River Basin in Southwestern Wyoming. This release includes geospatial data for the study area boundary, depth to coal, thickness of coal, outcrops and reliability. These data were compiled from numerous sources, the primary one being a database of point data that resides in a separate data release.

This data release contains the boundaries of assessment units and input data for the assessment of continuous oil and gas resources of the Niobrara interval of the Cody Shale in the Bighorn Basin Province of Wyoming and Montana. The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during November and December 2016 along 4,212 line-kilometers over Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The survey was conducted as part of a study of the subsurface geologic structure and geothermal and groundwater resources of Yellowstone National Park. The survey was designed to image the subsurface plumbing of Yellowstone's myriad thermal features by constraining the geometry of the major hydrostratigraphic contacts and mapping regional-scale geologic structures. Data were acquired by SkyTEM ApS with the SkyTEM 312M time-domain helicopter-borne electromagnetic system together with a Geometrics G822A cesium vapor magnetometer. The survey was...

Contains all wells permitted by Wyoming's Underground Injection Control (UIC) program which contain enough information in the permits to be locatable. Scale should be assumed to be approximately 1:100,000 but the spatial accuracy of each point varies according to the quality of locational information included in the original permits.

The Bighorn Basin is a large Laramide structural and sedimentary basin that encompasses about 10,400 square miles in north-central Wyoming and south-central Montana (fig. 1). The basin is bounded on the northeast by the Pryor uplift, on the east by the Bighorn uplift and on the south by the Owl Creek uplift. The northern margin is formed by a zone of faulting and folding referred to as the Nye-Bowler lineament. The western and northwestern margins are formed by the Absaroka volcanics and Beartooth uplift, respectively. Commercial hydrocarbon production was first established in the Bighorn Basin when oil was discovered from Cretaceous reservoirs at Garland field in 1906 (Biggs and Espach, 1960). Since then, many...

The Wind River Basin is a structural and sedimentary basin that formed during the Laramide orogeny in latest Cretaceous and early Eocene time. The basin encompasses about 7,400 square miles in central Wyoming and is bounded by the Washakie, Owl Creek and Bighorn uplifts on the north, the Casper arch on the east, the Granite Mountains uplift on the south, and Wind River uplift on the west (fig. 1). Many important conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources have been discovered and produced from reservoirs ranging from Mississippian through Tertiary in age (Keefer, 1969; Fox and Dolton, 1989, 1996; De Bruin, 1993; Johnson and others, 1996, 2007). It has been suggested by numerous authors (Geis, 1923; Schrayer...

Sagebrush ecosystems in North America have experienced extensive degradation since European settlement, and continue to further degrade from exotic invasive plants, greater fire frequency, intensive grazing practices, increased oil and gas development, climate change, and other factors. Remote sensing is often identified as a key information source to facilitate broad-area ecosystem-wide characterization, monitoring and analysis, however, approaches that characterize sagebrush with sufficient and accurate local detail across large areas to support ecosystem research and analysis are unavailable. ?We have developed a new remote sensing sagebrush ecosystem characterization approach for the state of Wyoming, U.S.A....

The U.S. Geological Survey conducted an assessment of coal resources and reserves in the Little Snake River coal field and Red Desert area of the Greater Green River Basin in Southwest Wyoming. A comprehensive database was compiled to support this assessment that includes data points for drill-holes and measured sections. Associated with these resources are lithology descriptors, (focusing on coal beds of varying depth) as well as coal quality data. Sources of data includes the USGS National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS), Anadarko Land Corporation (Anadarko), Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC), and previously unpublished data in USGS files. The primary table describes the sample location and...

This data release contains data associated with the USGS SIM publication "Stratigraphic Cross Sections of the Lewis Shale in the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province, Wyoming and Colorado". North-to-southeast (A–A’), west-to-east (B–B’), and southwest-to-northeast (C–C’) cross sections were created from 105 wells throughout the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province. The cross sections highlight 15 clinothems within the Lewis Shale, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Lance Formation progradational system. Data include well information and depths to key stratigraphic surfaces for 105 wells within the three cross sections. Well information includes the cross section identification, API #, well name,...

In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) completed a probabilistic assessment of the volume of technically recoverable oil resources available if current carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) technologies were applied in amenable oil reservoirs underlying the onshore and State waters area of the conterminous United States. The assessment also includes estimates of the magnitude of CO2 stored (retained) resulting from CO2-EOR activities. The USGS assessment team evaluated 3524 oil reservoirs that were miscible to injected CO2. The assessed reservoirs are located in 185 previously defined USGS plays in 33 petroleum provinces (or basins) of 7 national regions. All candidate reservoir data, except 12 reservoirs...
