This data release includes field data for fishes sampled through mid-water trawls and otter trawl methods from Suisun Bay, California to the mouth of the Sacramento River. These data were collected from the months of September through October in 2022 and 2023 as a part of a multi-year study of Suisun Dredging and Fish Distribution (SDFD). This data release includes quantitative data on collected fish taxa focused on habitat differences between shipping channels and shoals. Sampling was done using short duration (~15 minute) trawls alongside associated water quality sample and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data collected at variable locations, depths, times, and currents. First release: May 26,2023 Revised:...

A 1-m resolution, continuous surface, bathymetric digital elevation model (DEM) of the northern portion of San Francisco Bay, which includes San Pablo Bay, Carquinez Strait, and portions of Suisun Bay, was constructed from bathymetric surveys collected from 1999 to 2016. In 2014 and 2015 the California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) contracted the collection of bathymetric surveys of large portions of San Francisco Bay. A total of 93 surveys were collected using a combination of multibeam and interferometric side-scan sonar systems. Of those 93 surveys, 75 consist of swaths of data ranging from 18- to just over 100-meters wide. These swaths were separated by data gaps ranging from 10- to just over 300-meters wide....

Surface sediment samples from the North San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary were collected monthly at five stations located west of Rio Vista and east of Point Pinole. Sediment was collected near Montezuma Slough, Chips Island, the Concord Naval Weapons Station, Carquinez Strait near Martinez, and San Pablo Bay at water depths ranging from 6.5 to 14.3 meters. Samples were collected coincident with water-quality measurements (Cloern and Schraga, 2016) and metal concentrations in filter-feeding bivalves (Brown and Luoma, 1995; Stewart et al., 2013). Depending on the station, the period of record ranges from 13 to 24 years, from December 1993 to September 2017. Samples were sieved to <64 µm to eliminate grain-size bias...

This 25-m-resolution surface presents bathymetric change of Suisun Bay, California, from 1988 to 2016. This surface compares a 1-m-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) of the northern portion of San Francisco Bay (Fregoso and others, 2020), comprised of bathymetry data in the Suisun region from the time period referred to as the 2010s because the majority of the surveys were in that decade, to a 25-m-resolution bathymetric DEM of Suisun Bay comprised of historic surveys from 1988 to 1990 (referred to as the 1990s because the majority of the surveys were in that decade). The creation of this change surface involved the resampling of the 1-m-resolution 2010s DEM to match the older 25-m-resolution of the 1990s...

Field observations of water and suspended-sediment fluxes were conducted at Benicia Bridge and Mallard Island during the 2019 water year wet season to capture suspended-sediment flux during elevated Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta discharge. Measurements occurred on two occasions: 1) 26th of February 2019 at Benicia Bridge and Mallard Island, following a storm event that increased delta outflow and 2) 10th April 2019 at Benicia Bridge, following peak delta outflow for the 2019 water year. On both occasions, flux of water and suspended sediment were estimated using data from a boat-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler. This instrument provided high-resolution velocity and acoustic backscatter (ABS) data at a cross-section...

To effectively manage species and habitats at multiple scales, land managers require rapid information on wildlife use of managed areas and responses to landscape conditions and management actions. Global positioning system (GPS) tracking studies of wildlife are particularly informative to species ecology, habitat use, and conservation. Combining GPS data with administrative data, would more comprehensively inform how animals interact with and utilize habitats and ecosystems. Our goal was to create a conceptual model for a system that would accomplish this – the ‘Automated Interactive Monitoring System (AIMS) for Wildlife’. Our first objective was to develop a Customized Wildlife Report (CWR) - the first AIMS for...

A 1-m resolution bathymetric digital elevation model (DEM) of all off San Francisco Bay was constructed from bathymetric surveys collected from 1999 to 2020. The DEM has been divided into northern, central, and southern sections due to file size, and is available in both MLLW and NAVD88 versions. Background: In 2014 and 2015 the California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) contracted the collection of bathymetric surveys of large portions of San Francisco Bay. A total of 93 surveys were collected using a combination of multibeam and interferometric side scan sonar systems. This data release contains acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data used in generating a model of sediment flux through Carquinez Strait, CA at Benicia Bridge. The ADCP outputs binary data files containing measurement scheme, location, time, velocity, backscatter, boat heading, depth, and other parameters. There are two forms of data provided, one collected from two transects along the western side of Benicia Bridge and one collected with two stationary, upward-looking ADCPs deployed on the bed 300 m seaward of Benicia Bridge. These data are provided in ".csv" format for the transect data, and ".dat" format for the upward-facing data, as described in the READMEforCSV.txt and READMEforDAT.txt files associated...

Understanding the effects of climate change is a substantial challenge in estuarine systems because the mixing of freshwater and ocean water adds complexity to climate change projections. Such climate change projections have been conducted in the San Francisco Estuary as part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s CASCaDE Project. In this project, we assessed downscaled air temperature data from 10 Global Climate Change models under 2 Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) trajectories for greenhouse gas concentrations for three regions of the upper San Francisco Estuary: Suisun and Grizzly Bays, Suisun Marsh, and the legal Delta. We also utilized previously derived regression models to estimate future water temperatures...

Sediment grain-size distributions, stable carbon isotope ratios (d13C), total carbon to total nitrogen ratios (C:N), short-lived radionuclides (Beryllium-7, Cesium-137, and Lead-210), concentrations of 76 parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and concentrations of 33 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were measured in the northern reach of San Francisco Bay (San Pablo and Suisun Bays), and in stream beds of the lower reaches of Napa River and Sonoma Creek, 5 months and 20 months after the 2017 Atlas and Nuns wildfires. New sites for sediment geochemistry analyses added 20 months post-fire included the lower reaches of Petaluma Creek and Suisun Slough, and in marsh sediment on Napa...

Fine-grained sediment was collected from the banks of Napa River, Sonoma Creek, and tributaries in March 2018 and from shallow nearshore areas of the northern reach of San Francisco Bay in April 2018. Bulk sediment was dated using activities of short-lived cosmogenic radionuclides (beryllium-7, cesium-137, and lead-210). Contents of potentially toxic metals and source-rock-indicative elements, including rare earth elements, were quantified in the fine fraction of sediment (particles less than 0.063 mm diameter). Ratios of stable carbon-13/carbon-12 isotopes and total carbon to total nitrogen were determined in sedimentary organic matter.
