A revision to the hydrogeologic framework of the Virginia coastal plain southwest of the James River was developed by USGS during 2019-2021. This revision includes modifications to existing understanding of the groundwater system in Prince George, Surry, Sussex, Isle of Wight, and Southampton counties and the cities of Franklin and Suffolk in southeast Virginia. Airborne radiometric data are provided here as part of the data release "Airborne magnetic and radiometric survey, Virginia and North Carolina Fall Zone, 2021." This website includes the processed aeroradiometric data (gamma spectrometry for K, U and Th) in an ascii .csv file and geoTIFF images showing the total count values and potassium, thorium, and uranium concentrations. The spectral data are provided in a netcdf file that can be reviewed using any freely available viewer (such as HDFview) or loaded using software or programming languages with netcdf support, such as GSPy for Python (Foks, 2022). From 31 May to 29 June, 2022, a Virginia Tech team of 4-5 sampled the fish community in 30 Delmarva Peninsula streams (Maryland and Delaware, USA) as part of a larger stream-health study including other teams who surveyed geomorphology, water quality, flow, temperature, macroinvertebrates, and fish health at the same 30 streams. These 30 Chesapeake Bay Watershed tributaries had upstream drainage areas of 9 to 54 sq. km. At each stream, we sampled fish from two reaches using two-pass backpack electrofishing and seining. Reach A was the main reach surveyed by all the interdisciplinary teams; Reach B was surveyed for fish communities only. Reach length was 20 wetted channel widths, capped at 150 meters. Thirty water-supply drinking-water wells were sampled during fall 2018 for a set of constituents including PFAS. Groundwater samples were sent to Maxxam Laboratories (RTI Laboratory contract) to be analyzed for eighteen PFAS using USEPA 537m method. Groundwater age data were collected and analyzed as well in the USGS Reston, Va. laboratory. Quality-control samples including equipment and field blanks, sequential replicate samples, and laboratory spikes, were collected to evaluate and estimate potential contamination bias and measure variability from water-quality data-collection processes. This data release provides digital flight line data for a high-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric survey over Virginia and North Carolina along and near the eastern U.S. 'Fall Zone', which represents the transitional area between Atlantic Coastal Plain sediments and Piedmont metamorphic and igneous rocks. Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during July and August 2022 over a distance of 3,588.5 line kilometers covering Delaware Bay and surrounding regipons in New Jersey and Delaware. Data were collected as part of the USGS Delaware River Basin Next Generation Water Observing Systems (NGWOS) project to improve understanding of groundwater salinity distributions near Delaware Bay.
