A spatial dataset of lands and waters that The Nature Conservancy has a legal interest in (such as a conservation easement or fee-simple ownership). Includes spatial data from TNC's Conservation Lands System (CLS) database, which is the legal database of record for all TNC land transactions (fee, easement, lease and deed restrictions). Conservation Management Status (CMS) is a measure derived from the intent, duration and the effective management potential of spatial features of interest ("conservation situations") in the dataset. It is defined as a measure of the likelihood that an existing conservation situation is sufficient to secure biodiversity and allow for its persistence. For more information about the...
Index of fresh and saltwater connectivity This layer is one of the South Atlantic LCC indicators in the waterscapes ecosystem. To read more about the indicators and how they are being used, please visit the indicator page. Reason for selection Barriers to connectivity between rivers/streams and the ocean can strongly impact diadromous fish and alter natural movement of sediments, are easy to monitor and model, and are widely used and understood by diverse partners. Input Data Southeast Aquatic Connectivity Assessment Project: This project, a collaboration between The Nature Conservancy, the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership, and the South Atlantic LCC, identifies opportunities to improve aquatic connectivity...

Resilience concerns the ability of a living system to adjust to climate change, to moderate potential damages, to take advantage of opportunities, or to cope with consequences; in short, its capacity to adapt. In this project we aim to identify the most resilient examples of key geophysical settings (e.g. sand plains, granite mountains, limestone valleys, etc.) in New york State to provide conservationists with a nuanced picture of the places where conservation is most likely to succeed over centuries. The project had three parts: 1) identifying and mapping the geophysical settings, 2) developing a quantitative estimate of resilience for each setting based on landscape complexity and permeability, and 3) identifying...

This broad-scale landscape connectivity dataset identifies areas likely to facilitate ecological flow—particularly movement, dispersal, gene flow, and distributional range shifts for terrestrial plants and animals—over large distances and long time periods. Similar to the local permeability analyses (3km radius, Buttrick et al. 2015), this analysis is not species-specific. Rather, it focuses on structural connectivity of natural lands, with resistance to movement modeled as a function of landscape naturalness. This map does not incorporate projections of future climates, nor does it address connectivity for aquatic species. The results identify broad, intact areas where movement of terrestrial organisms is largely...

The Rapid Assessment (RA) vegetation dynamics data help to synthesize the best available knowledge of vegetation dynamics and quantify the natural range of variability in vegetation composition and structure. Models consist of two components: (1) a comprehensive description and (2) a quantitative, state-and-transition (box) model, created in the public domain software VDDT (Vegetation Dynamics Development Tool; Beukema et al. 2003). RA vegetation models were based on a simple, standardized five-box model that combines three generic succession stages with two canopy cover classes. Each class is specifically defined for individual models. Variations on this standardized model were also developed. Models were developed...
This dataset is made up of features aggregated from Ecoregional Assessments as well as other planning methodologies used across The Nature Conservancy to identify areas of biodiversity significance and prioritize conservation action. More information about ecoregional assesments and other conservation planning methodologies is available at The Nature Conservancy's Conservation Gateway, the Ecoregional Assessment Status Tool (EAST), and at http://maps.tnc.org.Purpose: This dataset provides a vision for conservation success for ecosystems, natural communities and species representative of an ecoregion by showing the boundaries of areas that The Nature Conservancy has prioritized for conservation. Many portfolio...

These road segments were identified to monitor wildlife movement between large habitat blocks, conservation lands, and Beginning with Habitat focus areas of statewide ecological significance in the Western Maine Linkage (identified by the Staying Connected Initiative).
This dataset is a compilation of freshwater conservation areas identified in TNC conservation ecoregional assessments. The purpose of the compilation was to standardize the representation of the conservation areas for freshwater areas within Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.
Conservation planning at any scale—regional, landscape level, or local—requires an understanding of patterns of environmental variation and biological diversity. This dataset was developed as a tool for assessing the biophysical character of landscapes, and for mapping the distribution and composition of community assemblages across those landscapes. Informed decisions on where to focus conservation efforts require such tools. Data on biological distributions are very often inadequate to a large-scale analysis of biodiversity. The close relationship of the physical environment to ecological process and biotic distributions underpins the ecological sciences, and in the absence of suitable biological datasets, conservation...

The download for this dataset includes TNC’s full Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System (NAHCS): stream size, stream temperature, stream gradient, stream geology, lakes and catchments. This dataset represents the results (9/30/2008) of the Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System (NAHCS) GIS map for streams and rivers. This classification focused on mapping a stream habitat types across 13 northeastern states (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DC, DE, VA, WV). Stream and river centerlines were extracted from the USGS National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NH-Plus) 2006 1:100,000 data. These reaches were attributed and placed into classes representing their biopysical setting in terms of...

This presentation is part of the Decision Support Tools for Natural Resource Managers in Sagebrush Communities and Across the Pacific Northwest Workshop Series, funded by the Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC). Mike Gough with Conservation Biology Institute provides a rapid overview of the Sagebrush Climate Console. He demonstrates the new Nature’s Stage Climate Mapper. The objective of this session to show participants possible applications they can use in management decision-making.
We developed a mapped classification of lakes and ponds based on variables that structure lacustrine natural communities and that could be mapped consistently across Northeastern US. The classification was built upon four key attributes: water temperature, trophic state, alkalinity, and depth. Water temperature was mapped into three classes (very cold, cold, and warm-cool) to reflect the requirements and limits of aquatic organisms. Trophic states, representing the productivity of a lake, were mapped into two classes (oligomesotrophic -mesotrophic and eutrophic- hypereutrophic). Alkalinity was grouped into three classes (high, medium, low) to reflect how well the lake system was buffered from acidification. Depth...

This data product was created for the project titled: “Application of the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) to the Northwest Atlantic” which was partially funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service and a joint collaborative project with The Nature Conservancy (Eastern Division Conservation Science), University of Rhode Island (Graduate School of Oceanography), and Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game (Division of Marine Fisheries). In the Northeast United States region, efforts are underway to better organize and integrate spatial marine data to support ocean planning and management efforts. An important step in this process is translating existing...
