Ten polymorphic microsatellite loci (containing tri and tetra-nucleotide repeats) were developed for the Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi), a subspecies of cutthroat trout listed as threatened under the United States Endangered Species Act. Polymorphism was assessed for 445 individuals from 12 populations representing eight watersheds spread throughout the three Distinct Population Segments defined for this subspecies. All loci were polymorphic (X? = 19, range 7?26 alleles). All loci were in Hardy?Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) except for one locus (OCH 9) in a single population (P < 0.00014 after Bonferroni correction for multiple tests). Published in Molecular Ecology Notes, volume 4, issue 4,...

When a species is proposed for listing as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must consider whether there are areas of habitat believed to be essential the species’ conservation. Those areas may be proposed for designation as “critical habitat.” Critical habitat is a term defined and used in the Act. It is a specific geographic area(s) that contains features essential for the conservation of a threatened or endangered species and that may require special management and protection. Critical habitat may include an area that is not currently occupied by the species but that will be needed for its recovery. An area is designated as “critical habitat” after the...

This dataset contains morphological measures of Pacific walruses sampled in the Chukchi and Bering Seas between 1972 and 1991. From 1972 through 1991 the Soviet Union employed industrial methods to harvest and process Pacific walruses to enhance the Russian Far East economy. Under the oversight of the Pacific branch of the Soviet All-Union Scientific Investigational Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), offshore harvesting crews worked from specialized marine mammal hunting ships (ZRS) throughout the spring, summer, and early autumn in the marginal sea ice habitats of the Bering and Chukchi Seas. They launched small (~7 m) wooden boats to approach walruses resting on ice pans, which were dispatched...

We developed a modelling spatial domain, or mask, to delimit the modeling extent for each species (n=15 species), as a part of a larger project to compare climate envelope models outputs that were generated using two types of predictor variables: expert opinion and statistical method (Brandt et al. 2017). The species masks, or model domains, were defined separately for each species using a variation of the “target-group” approach (Phillips et al. 2009), where the domain was determine using convex polygons including occurrence data for at least three phylogenetically related and similar species (Watling et al. 2012). This dataset is separated into 15 zipped GeoTIFF rasters, each with its own metadata documentation....

These data consist of the fatty acid composition (percent of mass) of adipose tissue samples from polar bears in Alaska's southern Beaufort Sea. Fat biopsy samples were collected from polar bears that were either captured or biopsy darted along the north coast of Alaska or on offshore ice during March, April, or May from 2004 to 2016. The data also include an identification code unique to an individual bear, sex, age class, and the date of sample collection.
The data we used for this study include species occurrence data (n=15 species), climate data and predictions, an expert opinion questionnaire, and species masks that represented the model domain for each species. For this data release, we include the results of the expert opinion questionnaire and the species model domains (or masks). We developed an expert opinion questionnaire to gather information on expert opinion regarding the importance of climate variables in determining a species geographic range. The species masks, or model domains, were defined separately for each species using a variation of the “target-group” approach (Phillips et al. 2009), where the domain was determined using convex polygons including...

Number of globally threatened amphibian species, by freshwater ecoregion. We generated the map of the number of freshwater amphibian species per ecoregion that are threatened with extinction using data from the Global Amphibian Assessment (GAA) (IUCN et al. 2006). The GAA assessed the conservation status of 5,918 amphibian species, and we analyzed the subset of 4,035 that depend on freshwater during some stage of their life cycle. Strictly arboreal species that do not require freshwater for their larval stage, species that develop directly from eggs without a larval stage, as well as few live-bearing species were excluded from this analysis. As of 2006, 1,356 freshwater amphibians were considered threatened. It...

Ictalurid populations, including those of the Neosho madtom,Noturus placidus, have been monitored in the Neosho River basin since theU.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the Neosho madtom as threatened in1991. The Neosho madtom presently occurs only in the Neosho River basin, whose hydrologic regime, physical habitat, and water quality have beenaltered by the construction and operation of reservoirs.

This theme shows the two conservation recovery zones for Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) that fall within the WOPR boundary. The first zone comprises the area from the coast to a line mirroring the coast thirty-five miles inland, north of a line running due east from North Bend, Oregon. The second zone comprises the area from the coast to a line mirroring the coast thirty-five miles inland, south of a line running due east of North Bend, Oregon. These data are estimates of the proportional contributions of bearded seal, beluga whale, bowhead whale, and ringed seal to the diets of southern Beaufort Sea polar bears. Fat biopsy samples were collected from polar bears captured or biopsy darted along the north coast of Alaska or on offshore ice during March, April, and May from 2004 to 2016. Fatty acid data of the above four prey species were compiled from online sources (Bromaghin et al. 2015ab, USGS 2021) and one private source that has been used in several polar bear diet studies (Thiemann et al. 2008). Diet composition was estimated from polar bear adipose tissue fatty acid composition data (USGS 2023) using three methods: the original quantitative fatty...

This theme shows the two zones for Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus). The first zone comprises the area from the coast to a line mirroring the coast thirty-five miles inland. The second zone comprises the area from the eastern edge of the first zone and north of the Medford BLM district boundary to a line mirroring the coast fifty miles inland. The southern sections of this zone have been adjusted from the original zones, for WOPR purposes. These zones show the areas of Marbled Murrelet habitat with most of the population occurring closer to the coast. This dataset has been "clipped" to the Western Oregon Plan Revision (WOPR) boundary.BLM: (Bureau of Land Management) WOPR: (Western Oregon Plan Revision)...

Number of globally threatened seabird species, by marine ecoregion. Using the online IUCN resource, the threatened species for each ecoregion were filtered for marine species only. Threatened species refer to those listed by IUCN Red List as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered (www.redlist.org). We downloaded the digital GIS data and summarized it by marine ecoregion to result in the number of threatened species per marine ecoregion. These data were derived by The Nature Conservancy, and were displayed in a map published in The Atlas of Global Conservation (Hoekstra et al., University of California Press, 2010). More information at http://nature.org/atlas. Data derived from: International Union for...

This dataset represents special status species (amphibians, reptiles, birds, invertebrates and mammals) observation points with the status of Candidate for federal listing (FC), Federally listed as endangered (FE) or Federally listed as threatened (FT). The FE and FT species included only those which are not specifically accounted for elsewhere in the Western Oregon Plan Revision (WOPR) process.

A 500-m buffer of the potential habitat for the piping plover (Charadrius melodus) in Oklahoma was derived from the published Gap Analysis Project (GAP) Species Habitat Map. This buffer layer is for visualization purposes only and is not included as a species' habitat feature in the analysis tab.
These data are estimates of den emergence date, den site departure dates, and duration at den sites as well as post-emergence observations for female polar bears sampled in the southern Beaufort Sea subpopulation 1985-2016 and the Chukchi Sea subpopulation 2008-2017. The data were used to better understand the importance of time spent at the den site post-emergence. Emergence dates and departure dates were determined using collar temperature sensor data.
