The goal of this study is to use eDNA as a cost effective tool for documenting the occurrence and distribution of ESA-listed spring-chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) throughout the Okanogan and Methow watersheds in an effort to map habitat use and connectivity. Our approach will use eDNA to detect low density spring-chinook in filtered water samples to inventory distribution and re-colonization of tributaries at strategically-sampled points throughout entire stream networks. This approach will provide one of the first applications of eDNA technology for monitoring distribution of native fish species of conservation concern. Forest cores are derived by applying an inverse buffer (-100m) to forest patches to represent the area of contiguous interior forest habitat. Forest patches are defined as areas of contiguous natural cover bound by non-natural edge or linear fragmenting features (roads, railroads, transmission lines, natural gas pipelines). The following land cover types were selected from the 2006 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) to define “natural cover”: deciduous forest, coniferous forest, mixed [deciduous-coniferous] forest, scrub-shrub, woody wetland, and emergent wetland. Overview: This project represented a partnership between US Geological Survey (USGS) National Geospatial Program, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (on behalf of the Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative (DLCC)), and the Center for Geographical Studies (CGS) at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). The project focused on updates and improvements to the high resolution National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) through the addition and/or improvement of NHD polygon, line, and point features in effort to fully realize a more robust and accurate NHD for priority areas within the DLCC geography. The Floodplain Forest Workshop that was held in Dubuque on September 15-17, 2015. The agenda included presentations and discussions regarding floodplain forest issues ranging from system level influences to floodplain forest threats to site level management. The program included a field trip and several breakout sessions including landscape level considerations, factors to consider when writing management prescriptions, identifying specific research needs, and discussing how to best collaborate and communicate moving forward. Products of the workshop included: detailed discussion notes; summary and map of the field trip; list of contacts; and a summary of what has happened since the workshop concluded.
Why Rangelands: The Central Valley of California, the surrounding foothills and the interior Coast Range include over 18 million acres of grassland. To be successful, natural resource managers need to synthesize diverse information on the effects of management actions, climate change and other stressors on wildlife populations at appropriate scales. The project team developed a Decision Support Tool (DST) that integrates the results of multi-disciplinary, multi-taxa modeling allowing users to project outcomes of conservation actions, accounting for effects of climate change and other stressors. This DST builds on work to improve a sea level rise tool for adaptive tidal wetland restoration and management. This project will complete a tribally-based climate change vulnerability assessment t and adaptation plan for Eulachon that spawn in the Chilkoot and Chilkat rivers near Haines, Alaska. Local monitoring will collect data on spawning populations in the Chilkoot River, and a tribal stakeholder group will be convened to analyze climate change projections, apply traditional knowledge, rank climate vulnerabilities, and prioritized adaptation strategies.

A sea level rise vulnerability assessment has been completed for the shorelines of San Juan County Washington. This tool was developed to enhance understanding among land managers, provide a scientific foundation for shoreline management decisions and improve conservation of shoreline processes critical to ecosystem health. This project will create a comprehensive communication strategy that includes improving the model’s credibility, researching adaptation strategies, creating decision support tools, and hosting focus meetings.

Water availability, distribution, quality and quantity are critical habitat elements for fish and other water-dependent species. Furthermore, the availability of water is also a pre-requisite for a number of human activities. The density of weather and hydrology observation sites on the North Slope is orders of magnitude less than in other parts of the U.S., making it difficult to document hydrologic trends and develop accurate predictive models where water is a key input. FY2015Researchers conducted interviews with sagebrush land managers from Oregon, Idaho and Utah to identify the most relevant variables, threats and management strategies relevant to their specific sagebrush management areas. Managers were also asked to assess a series of web-based climate tools, providing feedback about what features of the tools were most intuitive, interesting and useful, or complicated, unnecessary, and in need of revision. Results from the first phase of the project suggested several directions to improve existing climate tools.

FY2015This project assesses the efficacy of ACK55, a naturally occurring bacterium that decreases invasive annual grasses by up to 70% on test sites. Working with the USDA, USFWS and the Great Basin Institute, researchers plan to treat ten, 1-acre plots on private lands within sage-grouse Biologically Significant Areas to determine the efficacy of ACK55 in warm and dry soils.

FY2016Develop and utilize both correlative and experimental approaches to evaluate effects of different intensities of spring cattle grazing on sage-grouse habitat selection, insect abundance, and sage-grouse demographic and behavioral traits. Collect data and document the effects of different levels of spring cattle grazing intensity on:1) sage-grouse demographic traits; 2) abundance and biomass of arthropods; 3) sage-grouse nest concealment and other vegetation/habitat features.Analyze the relationship between cattle grazing and sage-grouse demography at multiple spatial scales and evaluate the effects of experimental changes in cattle grazing on sage-grouse reproductive parameters.

Prior to 1860, approximately 66% of what is now woodland occurred as sagebrush plant communities.This watershed scale project: Documents the impact of PJ treatments in formerly sagebrush steppe communities on understory vegetation composition, hydrologic function, and surface runoff and soil erosion at the landscape scale. Expands the snow monitoring component to understand snow dynamics and timing of plant phenology in cut and uncut treatments. Secures expertise to analyze existing datasets.

FY2014Recent drought, change agents and the spectrum of greater management needs have highlighted the relative dearth of in situ weather and climate measurement stations in the Great Basin. Thus, interest has grown in supplementing or initiating atmospheric and hydrologic measurements.The purpose of this project was: To review the existing station networks in the context of management needs by providing examples of how climate observation gaps can be assessed Provide some guidelines for the placement of new or augmented stations.This project was funded as a target of opportunity.
