The GCPO LCC region contains some of the most diverse aquatic biota in the world. The streams and rivers on which this biota depends are valuable conservation and economic resources. However, fragmentation of streams and rivers by dams and other barriers is a primary threat to the health of resident and anadromous fish species in southern rivers. Conservation planning in the region requires an assessment of the degree of fragmentation of streams and rivers and potential impacts on fish populations. However, the ability to conduct a connectivity assessment is limited in the GCPO LCC region due to the lack of a comprehensive dataset of fish barrier locations, attributes, and links to basic river maps. SARP proposes...

Stream temperature data will be acquired from federal and provincial government agencies, as well as other data holders in British Columbia to eventually be housed in an interagency database. Spatial statistical models for river networks like those used for NorWeST will be used with existing and readily available stream temperature data to develop a consistent set of high-resolution predictions for all streams and reaches within two pilot areas: an interior location represented by the Nicola River watershed in the Great Northern LCC and a coastal location represented by the Somass River watershed within the North Pacific LCC. Work in these proposed pilot areas would include processing of spatial data and applying...

As climate change progresses and stressors to biodiversity continue to expand across the landscape, conservation actions need to be increasingly targeted and effective. Past and current efforts put more weight on investments in conservation application with less attention to monitoring the outcome and refining the approach. The inception of the Landscape Conservation Cooperatives provided a timely opportunity to refine our approach to conservation in a way that maximizes return on investment to maintain important natural resources and ecosystems for future generations. The conservation community lags behind other sectors in evaluating the efficacy of their actions. For example, the concept of “business excellence”...
Proposed work will monitor for five years vegetation, fuels, wildlife, insects, and weather at 10 Sagebrush Steppe Treatment Evaluation Project (SageSTEP) sites, all of which have been treated to reduce either juniper encroachment (woodland sites) or cheatgrass invasion (sagebrush/cheatgrass sites). Monitoring of treatment response over the long term will lead to a better understanding of the extent to which managers can manipulate vegetation, fuels, and wildlife habitat in the context of climate change.FY2010Objectives:1) assess longterm trajectories in populations of key plant and animal species, and link these trajectories to management restoration treatments and to climate change; 2) measure total ecosystem...
The Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GLNCC) has convened the Columbia Basin Partner Forum (CBPF) to help facilitate collaboration among conservation practitioners and partnerships that share landscape conservation challenges in an eco-geographic context. Through a loosely structured process, field-level managers, scientists, and conservation constituents will identify priority conservation information, scientific needs, and implementation opportunities within the scope of the Great Northern LCC Strategic Conservation Framework. The CBPF will also provide a means to engage the partnership network (a more diverse and directly knowledgeable constituency) on specific conservation needs that will inform...

Recent studies show that past and ongoing environmental changes have been substantial and have likely already affected conservation efforts in Hawaii. Much of the state has experienced substantial drying, including decreases in mean annual precipitation since the 1920s, longer rainless periods, and decreasing stream flow. Temperatures have been increasing in the state for the last 40 years, especially at higher elevations where most native habitats and species currently persist. Unfortunately there are few long term monitoring efforts that allow us to understand plant species responses to these past, ongoing and future shifts in environmental conditions. Consequently, we know little about how environmental shifts...

· Anticipating potential shifts in plant communities has been a major challenge in climate-change ecology. In the State of Hawaii, where conservation efforts tend to be habitat focused, the lack of projections of vegetation shifts under future climate is a major knowledge gap for developing management actions for climate-change mitigation and adaptation.· As a first approximation, we have modeled potential shifts of terrestrial vegetation across the Hawaiian landscape between now and the end of this century. Our approach relies on modeling the relation between current climate and the distribution of broad climatically determined moisture zones (MZs; for example, wet, mesic, and dry areas) that form the...

The main goal of this project is to ensure that the 2011-13 climate change update to the Baylands Ecosystem Habitat Goals Report (Baylands Goals) and other key, ongoing conservation activities in the San Francisco Bay region use the latest information about the current and future status of San Francisco Bay tidal marsh ecosystems, particularly in the context of sea-level rise. The main product of the project is the improved Sea Level Rise (SLR) Tool, specifically upgraded to inform the Baylands Goals Report update. The tool will continue to be available online at www.prbo.org/sfbayslr. All data layers going into the tool are and will continue to be downloadable from the site.
This multi-LCC project is designed to evaluate delivery of existing courses offered through the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) as “pilots” to enhance expertise needed within the regional context of LCC and Climate Science Center (CSC) communities. Feedback from these offsite training sessions and other strategic discussion will help identify and prioritize which tools to include in future training for staff and partners. A pre-workshop and in-person exercise was conducted by reviewing SIAS metrics and other LCC activities for products required of the LCCs, determining the process/skills/tools needed to deliver this training, and listing training opportunities that are available or needed to develop...

Final Report Executive Summary: The Nature Conservancy and a team of 14 academic partners (the project team) received funding from the Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSMART program and the Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative in 2012 to conduct this Gila River Flow Needs Assessment. The assessment describes the existing condition of the Gila River in the Cliff-Gila Valley and examines the potential impacts of CUFA diversion and climate change on the riparian and aquatic ecosystem. The project team was assisted by 35 academic, agency and consulting scientists who have expertise in some aspect of the Gila River’s hydrology and ecology. This larger team of scientists provided input on a review draft of this assessment...
This project provides a better understanding how linkages among surface-water availability, connectivity, and temperature mediate habitat and trophic dynamics of the Fish Creek Watershed (FCW). These interrelated processes form a shifting mosaic of freshwater habitats across the landscape that can be classified, mapped, understood, and modeled in response to past and future climate and land-use change in a spatial and temporal context. Developing scenarios of freshwater habitat change in this context provides managers and scientists with a flexible template to evaluate a range of potential responses to climate and land-use change. Applying this approach in the FCW is made feasible because of the availability of...

The Integrated Ecosystem Model for Alaska project (IEM) uses down-scaled climate models as the drivers of ecosystem change to produce forecasts of future fire, vegetation, permafrost and hydrology regimes at a resolution of 1km. This effort is the first to model ecosystem change on a statewide scale, using climate change input as a major driving variable. The objectives of the IEM project are as follows; to better understand and predict effects of climate change and other stressors on landscape level physical and ecosystem processes, and to provide support for resource conservation planning. The IEM will provide resource managers with a decision support tool to visualize future landscapes in Alaska. Model outputs...
Existing climate change science and guidance for restoring and maintaining whitebark pine forests will be evaluated using landscape simulation modeling to inform implementation of the Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee (GYCC) Whitebark Pine (WBP) subcommittees WBP Strategy. We will design a no constraints management scenario based on the GYCC WBP Strategy and 2015 publication Restoring whitebark pine ecosystems in the face of climate change and incorporating the latest projections of future climate suitability for WBP and other landscape stressors (mountain pine beetles, competing species, wildland fire). We will use the landscape simulation model FireBGCv2 to simulate interactions of future climate, mountain...
