This project evaluates the connections between climate change impacts and health in Bristol Bay communities. Climate change impacts were assessed through the lens of public health, with an eye towards the potential effects on disease, injury, food and water security, and mental health. Three focal communities were included in this assessment: Nondalton, a lake community, Levelock, a river community, and Pilot Point, a coastal community. The resulting assessment reports will be used to assist focal communities, as well as neighboring communities, in addressing climate-change related issues.

To assess the vulnerability of a region to invasive plants, documentation of the presence or absence of invasive plants is necessary. This project expands on work initiated by the EPA to identify invasive plants in rural communities in the Bristol Bay region. Eighteen additional Bristol Bay communities were inventoried for invasive plants in 2012-2014. This work provides a baseline for understanding the potential impact from these plants and the opportunity to treat the existing populations before they invade new areas.
To assess the vulnerability of a region to invasive plants, documentation of the presence or absence of invasive plants is necessary. This project expands on work initiated by the EPA to identify invasive plants in rural communities in the Bristol Bay region. Between the two efforts, 26 villages will be inventoried for invasive plant species; this will provide both an essential baseline for understanding the potential impact from these plants and the opportunity to treat the existing populations before they invade new areas. In 2012 Bristol Bay Native Association (BBNA) in partnership with Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation (BBAHC) and Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) began evaluating connections between climate change impacts and health. The purpose, to encourage wellness and to adapt to changes in the Bristol Bay region. Of special importance for community wellness are the changes occurring to the natural environment and the effects on food and water security. This is a synthesis of findings from the project.

The Bristol Bay region represents an area of transition between the maritime climate of the southern coast and the continental climate of the Interior and Copper River Basin. These regions are largely protected by mountains areas and do not have a strong maritime influence. Temperatures are moderate and sea ice does form in the Bristol Bay but complete freeze-up of these waterways is not common. Low winter temperatures are below 0 degrees F with events below -20F. Summer temperatures are generally in the mid 60s with only a few days above 80. Highest precipitation is in August and September (Shulsky and Wendler 2007).
