The ease, efficiency, and sensitivity of environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling of species in aquatic environments is leading to an explosion in its use across North America. In this presentation, we describe eDNA sampling technology and share first year field results from the ongoing range-wide, eDNA-based inventory of bull trout in the northwestern U.S. during which ~3,000 sites were sampled by dozens of partner agencies. Those results are already accessible via a dynamic web portal and serving many purposes, including constituting a durable biodiversity archive for answering questions about many species in future years. We are currently in the planning process to sample thousands of additional sites during the summers...

Determining species distributions accurately is crucial to developing conservation and management strategies for imperiled species, but a challenging task for small populations. We evaluated the efficacy of environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis for improving detection and thus potentially refining the known distribution of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Methow and Okanogan Subbasins of the Upper Columbia River, which span the border between Washington, USA and British Columbia, Canada. We developed an assay to target a 90 base pair sequence of Chinook DNA and used quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to quantify the amount of Chinook eDNA in triplicate 1-L water samples collected at 48 stream...

About UsThe Columbia River Basin Partner Forum (CBPF) was convened to address a unique geographic sub-region of the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC). The Columbia River Basin is the drainage basin of the Columbia River and covers 668,000 km2. The Columbia River Basin includes the southeastern portion of the Canadian province of British Columbia, most of the U.S. states of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, the western part of Montana, and very small portions of Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. The GNLCC addresses landscape scale stressors across a large area of the northwest US and the Canadian west. The CBPF will follow the overall guidance and operating principals of the GNLCC set forth in the GNLCC’s...

The American Community Survey (ACS) is a national, publicly available survey provided by the U.S. Census Bureau that collects information about population, education, housing, economic status, and more. Planners, public officials, entrepreneurs, and researchers rely on the data collected through this survey to help understand community conditions and to support community planning efforts. For more information, please visit: http://applcc-ecosystemservices.org/human-landscape/economics-and-business.This socioeconomic profile contains many datasets. The dataset displayed here shows Median Household Income in 2013. Basic measures of economic status, such as those collected by ACS, can help to reveal ways in which economic...

This region-wide coordinated bird monitoring program, supported by state, federal, tribal, nongovernmental organizations, and two statewide bird conservation partnerships, is designed to provide spatially-referenced baseline data for science-based biological planning and conservation design for the Great Northern LCC and its partners that is directly comparable with other landscapes and BCRs. We are requesting a third year of funding to continue sampling in BCR10 Montana and Idaho to enhance our ability to make robust inference to bird populations on grassland, shrublands, and riparian systems. These data currently are being used by project partners to develop spatially-explicit models that will allow assessment...

The Aleutian archipelago is an area that is rich in cultural history. Information about cultural sites and artifacts exists in a variety of formats including peer-reviewed publications, agency reports, and other records. The purpose of this project is to: (1) develop GIS data layer(s) of cultural sites that can be used in vulnerability assessments; and (2) develop an annotated bibliography of literature about cultural resources that can help guide future management and research in the region.
An Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) is an area identified using an internationally agreed set of criteria as being globally important for the conservation of bird populations. In the United States the Program is administered by the National Audubon Society.

Efforts to model and predict long-term variations in climate, based on scientific understanding of climatological processes, have grown rapidly in their sophistication to the point that models can be used to develop reasonable expectations of regional climate change. This is important because our ability to assess the potential consequences of a changing climate for particular ecosystems or regions depends on having realistic expectations about the kinds and severity of change to which a region may be exposed. The fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) is a collaborative climate modeling research effort coordinated by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).This is the most recent phase...

We collected a series of audio recordings of interviews conducted with research participants. The information collected details what was discussed during the conversations between the interviewer (one of our project team members) and project participants, individually, in pairs, or as a group of three people. The audio data were mostly collected in one geographic location: Miami, Oklahoma and several of the audio files were collected over the phone. One interview was conducted via email with typed responses.
The annual distributions of waterfowl during autumn-winter can influence ecological, environmental, cultural, and economic relationships. We used previously developed Weather Severity Indices (WSI) that explained migration by dabbling ducks in eastern North America and weather data from the North American Regional Reanalysis to develop an open-access internet-based tool (i.e, WSI app) to visualize and query WSI data. We used data generated by the WSI app to determine if the weather known to elicit southerly migration by dabbling ducks had changed, October – April 1979 – 2014.We detected that the amount of area in the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways with weather severe enough to cause southerly migration decreased...

The Plains and Prairie Potholes LCC is currently developing a strategic plan that will help guide its partners toward making more informed conservation decisions across the Northern Great Plains. As part of that effort, the PPP-LCC aims to provide syntheses for its partners that will help them understand the effects of conservation decisions and policies across different resources and sectors of the economy. One way to view these impacts is in terms of ecosystem services. That is, the set of services that humans derive from ecosystems such as flood control, agricultural productivity or wildlife populations. The PPP-LCC aims to use the ecosystems services framework to synthesize current information about grasslands,...
The National Landcover Database (NLCD) from the United States (2001) and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) (2000), and a classified Landsat TM scene to fill the gap between the US and Canada were mosaicked together. Landsat images from June or July 2000-2002 were used to be consistent with timing of other data layers. Landcover across the layers were crosswalked and standardized into 5 classes: crop, grassland, other/non-habitat, woody vegetation and water/wetlands.

The study seeks to provide a retrospective analysis of the relationships among bird abundance and distribution and changes in land cover and climate in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. The resultant models will be used to provide spatially explicit forecasts of future avian responses. Using data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and a hierarchical modeling framework that accounts for imperfect detection during surveys, species distribution and abundance is estimated. Historic aerial photos are being digitized and classified to measure landscape covariates. Once species-specific relationships between distribution parameters (i.e., occupancy, colonization, extinction) and landscape covariates...

Alaska is experiencing a wide range of impacts from climate change and communities seek adaptive strategies that encourage wellness and sustainability. This report documents climate change impacts as described by community residents and climate change effects or potential effects as interpreted through the lens of public health. It is the seventh report in a series describing climate change in communities across Alaska, and the third report to focus on the Bristol Bay region. In the Alutiiq and Yupik community of Levelock Alaska, residents report changes to the weather, seasons, landscape, plants, and wildlife with important implications for community health. Understanding local impact of climate change is important...
